  • Volatile organic compounds emitted to the atmosphere can cause adverse effects on human health and participate in photochemical smog formation reactions. The destruction of a series of VOCs has been carried out by non-thermal plasma in other researches. And the characteristic of non-thermal plasma was operated at atmospheric pressure and low temperature. A new type non-thermal plasma reactor was investigated combined Glidarc plasma with water jet in this research. Also, it was found that the water-jet had an significant effect on the toluene removal efficiency. But too much water content does not favor toluene decomposition by decreasing of reaction temperature. The input toluene concentration, gas flow rate, water flow rate and specific energy input were used as experiment variables. The toluene removal efficiency, energy efficiency and specific energy input were 75.3%, 146.6 g/kWh and $1.12kWh/m^3$ at a water flow rate of 100 mL/min.

  • The geometry and dimensions of an expansion chamber are decisive factors in thermal puffer plasma chamber designs. Because they together dominate the temperature and speed at which the cooling gas from the chamber flows back through a flow channel to the arcing zone for the successful interruption of fault currents. In this study, we calculated the flow and mass transfer driven by arc plasma, and investigated the effects of a flow guide installed inside a thermal puffer plasma chamber. It is found that the existing cold gas of the chamber mixes with hot gases entrained from the arcing zone and is subjected to compression due to pressure build-up in the chamber. The pressure build-up with the flow guide is larger than that without due to a vortex which rotates clockwise around the chamber center. By the reverse pressure gradient, the mixing gas of the chamber flows back out for cooling down the residual plasma near current zero. In the case with the flow guide, the temperature just before current zero is lower than that without, and the Cu concentration with high electrical conductivity is also less than that without the flow guide.

  • The characteristic analysis and fundamental test of a plasma generator is performed for drag reduction of a high speed vehicle. In high pressures, thermal plasmas is suitable for generating plasmas. The appropriate plasma torch is selected and used to generate thermal plasmas. The plasma torch, which can emit high-speed and high-pressure plasma jet, is suitable for generating plasma counterflow jet. In this study, the fundamental test and analysis for the plasma torch is summarized. Results show that supplying gas pressures and electrode gap of plasma torch are considered as critical parameters for generating plasma jets.

  • With increase in demand for higher operating temperatures of gas turbines, extensive research efforts have been carried out to enhance the performance of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) in the field of coating processing as well as materials. In this study, thermal barrier coatings in lanthanum/gadolinium zirconate system, which is one of the most promising candidates for replacing yttira-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) in thermal barrier coating applications, are fabricated via suspension plasma spray. Dense, $300{\sim}400{\mu}m$ thick coatings of fluoritephase zirconate with modest amount of segmented microstructures are obtained by using suspension plasma spray with suspensions of planetary-milled mixture between lanthanum and/or gadolinium oxide and nano zirconia. These coatings exhibit thermal conductivities of 1.6 ~ 1.7 W/mK at $1000^{\circ}C$, which is relatively lower than that of YSZ.

  • In the present work, water-based gold nanofluids were synthesized by the solution plasma processing (SPP). The size distribution and the shape of gold nanoparticles in the nanofluids were investigated using high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). The dispersion stability of gold nanofluids was characterized using zeta potential, as well. The thermal properties of gold nanofluids were measured by utilizing lambda measurement device. Nanofluids containing nanoparticles with $64.0{\pm}42.1\;nm{\sim}18.10{\pm}5.0\;nm$ in diameter were successfully synthesized. As diameter of nanoparticles decreased, dispersion stability of nanofluids increased and the enhanced ratio of thermal conductivity increased. The nanofluid with nanoparticles of $18.10\;{\pm}\;5.0\;nm$ in diameter showed approximately 3% improvement in thermal conductivity measurement and this could be due to the enhanced Brownian movement.

  • The thermal spray coating process is being used to protect the metals and alloys from wear, abrasion, fatigue, tribology, and corrosion failure. Therefore, in the present study, Al and Zn was deposited by plasma arc thermal spray process onto the steel substrate and their performance was assessed. The bond adhesion result shows that Al coating has higher value attributed to compact, dense, and less porous compared to Zn coating which contain defects/pores and uneven morphology assessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electrochemical results show that the Al coating exhibited higher impedance value compared to Zn in artificial ocean water solution at prolonged exposure periods. However, both coatings show the increment in polarization resistance with exposure periods which reveal that porosity of coatings is filled by the corrosion products.

  • Recently, as the concept of pet food that satisfies both nutritional needs and the five senses has evolved, so too has the demand for effective pet food non-thermal sterilization methods. Prominent non-thermal technologies include high-pressure processing, plasma, and radiation, which are favored for their ability to preserve nutrients, avoid residues, and minimize compositional changes, thereby maintaining quality and sensory properties. However, to assess their effectiveness on pet food, it is essential to optimize operational parameters such as pressure levels, plasma intensity, radiation dosage, and temperature. Further studies are needed to evaluate microbial sterilization efficacy and sensory attributes. This exploration is expected to lay the groundwork for preventing zoonotic diseases and improving the production of high-quality pet food.

  • A failure analysis of tungsten filaments used in quadrupole mass spectrometer for plasma process monitoring was carried by using SEM and EDS. Failed at high temperature, filaments showed two kinds of failure modes. The one is that diameter of filament became thinner gradually and finally snapped. The other is that filament abruptly snapped almost at a right angle. The EDS analysis showed Fe and C, including W and Fe, on the surface of failed filament. when failed filaments were treated with plasma in mixture of Ar and $CF_4$, the amount of Fe and C decreased. The failure analysis of filament showed that the cause of filament failure is thermal evaporation and grain growth of tungsten at high temperature.

  • A chamber enduring 3,000 bars and an electrical high voltage power system have been designed and installed for studying the characteristics of the plasma produced in electro-thermal chemical propulsion system. In order to test the structural characteristics, polyethylene injectors were used which have 4 or 6 mm inner diameter and several lengths from 15 to 70 mm. The capacitors were charged at the voltages of 5.2, 7.3 and 10.4 kV which correspond to 5.58, 11 and 22.3 kJ in charging energy. The observed resistivities of the plasma injector are close to those predicted by a theoretical model that describes the plasma resistivity according to high current density.
