The microhardness of rhenium sheets was determined as a function of indentation load and temperature. The temperature dependence of the microhardness between room temperatures and $1000 ^{\circ}C$was studied using a hot microhardness tester equipped with a Vickers indenter. The load dependence of the microhardness was investigated using oth a Vickers and a Knoop indenter. The indentation size effect (ISE) was well explained using the normalized Meyers law. The hardness of the annealed rhenium sheet approached that of the as-rolled sheets at large indentation loads because of work-hardening under the indenter during indentation. The hardness at zero load(obtained from extrapolation of the load dependence of the hardness) suggested that the hardness is controlled by two different mech-anisms having different thermal activation. At low temperature the activation energy for the mechanism controlling the hardness was approximately 0.02 eV , Whereas at higher temperatures that was approximately 0.15eV. The tranisi-tion temperature between the two different controlling mechanisms was about $250^{\circ}C$.
A Molded Case Circuit Breaker (MCCB) is an electric control device to interrupt the abnormal currents which result from the over-loads or short-circuits. Its malfunction will result in severe accidents. In the development of the MCCB, higher current-rating and improved thermal performance become more and more important in providing the safe function and reliability for the modern devices requiring small scale and high performance. It is also very important to consider the factors of temperature rise in the design of MCCB. The major reasons of temperature rise in the MCCB result from the resistances, which are come from the connection and contact surfaces. These resistances are influenced by current, time, configuration of contact surfaces and applied voltage. In order to predict the temperature distribution inside MCCB, we have simulated the model with some assumptions and simplifications, using commercial code ICEPAK. To verify the results of temperature field analysis, the numerical results are compared with experimental ones for the same model. The results show a good agreement with actual temperature rise obtained by experiments.

Steady-state creep analysis of power generation turbine blade is carried out considering thermal loads and centrifugal forces. Creep strains and stresses of the turbine blade are calculated for 3-D finite clement model of the turbine blade. From the numerical results, creep life of the turbine blade is predicted. The results of creep analysis during about 200 hours indicate that creep strains of the turbine blade do not reach the rupture strain of GTD111. Creep stresses of the turbine blade are relaxed as time increases. Maximum creep strain occurs at the tip section of the airfoil pressure surface. The maximum creep strain of the turbine blade is expected close to the rupture strain after 50,000 hours approximately. The turbine blade may not have creep damage for the starting procedure of the turbine.
Horizontal cracks at the mid-depth of concrete slabs were observed at a section of the continuously reinforced concrete pavement(CRCP) structures on the Korea Highway Corporation's Test Road. To investigate the existence and the extent of horizontal cracks in the concrete slab, a number of cores were taken from the section of CRCP. To identify the causes of horizontal cracks, numerical analyses were conducted. Several variables relative to design, material, and environment were considered in the studies to evaluate possible causes of horizontal cracking. A numerical model of CRCP was developed using the finite element discretization, and the shear and normal tensile stress distributions in CRCP were investigated with the model. Numerical analysis results show that the maximum shear and normal tensile stresses develop near the depth of steel bars at transverse cracks. If those maximum stresses reach the strength of concrete, horizontal cracks occur. The maximum stresses become higher as the environmental loads, coefficient of thermal expansion of concrete, and elastic modulus of concrete increase.

The competition to deliver ultra-low emitting vehicles at a reasonable cost is driving the automotive industry to invest significant manpower and test laboratory resources in the design optimization of increasingly complex exhaust after-treatment systems. Optimization can no longer be based on traditional approaches, which are intensive in hardware use and laboratory testing. The CFD is in high demand for the analysis and design in order to reduce developing cost and time consuming in experiments. This paper describes the development of a comprehensive practical model based on experiments for simulating the performance of automotive three-way catalytic converters, which are employed to reduce engine exhaust emissions. An experiment is conducted to measure species concentrations before and after catalytic converter for different loads on engine. The model simulates the emission system behavior by using an exhaust system heat conservation and catalyst chemical kinetic sub-model. CFD simulation is used to study the performance of automotive catalytic converter. The substrate is modeled as a porous media in FLUENT and the standard k-e model is used for turbulence. The flow pattern is changed from axial to radial by changing the substrate model inside the catalytic converter and the flow distribution and the conversion efficiency of CO, HC and NOx are achieved first, and the predictions are in good agreement with the experimental measurements. It is found that the conversion from axial to radial flow makes the catalytic converter more efficient. These studies help to understand better the performance of the catalytic converter in order to optimize the converter design.

Dwelling environments that can help elderly farmers to live more safely, independently, and conveniently are becoming more and more important. Many rural houses are built without any particular architectural or energy-related criteria, so most of them have poor insulation. The construction technology used is also not precise, which increases the loads for heating and cooling. Therefore, rural houses need to be improved. Also, there is more and more need for plans to realize eco-friendly dwellings, so the principle of nature-oriented plans related to the direction, insulation, or landscaping of a house is being emphasized. Insulation is one of the most effective ways to save energy for heating and cooling. This preliminary study to improve the insulation of rural houses examined three regions in South Korea: the central region, the southern region, and the Jeju Island. A field investigation was conducted on a total of 18 houses, including six from each town in the selected regions. The information was used to figure out the current status of rural houses and the characteristics of the buildings. The main living spaces are the living room for the central region and the main room in the southern region and Jeju Island. The southern regions are plane shapes surrounded by rooms, and all ventilation is accomplished by windows. The studied houses were mostly masonry structures with slate rooftops. Additions and improvements included room expansions and bathroom interior installations.

Fitting process carried out in automobile transmission assembly line is classified into three classes; heat fitting, press fitting, and their combined fitting. Heat fitting is a method that heats gear to a suitable range under the tempering temperature and squeezes it toward the outer diameter of shaft. Its stress depends on the yield strength of gear. Press fitting is a method that generally squeezes gear toward that of shaft at room temperature by press. Another method heats warmly gear and safely squeezes it toward that of shaft. Warm shrink fitting process for automobile transmission part is now gradually increased, but the parts (shaft/gear) assembled by this process produced dimensional changes of gear profile in both radial and circumferential directions. So that it may cause noise and vibration between gears. In order to solve these problems, we need an analysis of warm shrink fitting process, in which design parameters are involved; contact pressure according to fitting interference between outer diameter of shaft and inner diameter of gear, fitting temperature, and profile tolerance of gear. In this study, an closed form equation to predict contact pressure and fitting load was proposed in order to develop optimization technique of warm shrink fitting process and verified its reliability through the experimental results measured in the field and FEM, that is, thermal-structural coupled field analysis. Actual loads measured in the field have a good agreement with the results obtained by theoretical and finite element analysis and also the expanded amounts of the gear profile in both radial and circumferential directions are within the limit tolerances used in the field.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the structural safety at the topside weldment of hull structure, which was welded after launching. For it, the variations of residual stress and distortion at the topside weldment with loading conditions such as hull girder hogging bending moment after launching and free initial loading state was evaluated by using FEA. And the maximum stress range at the weldment under design loads specified by classification society was evaluated by FEA. In this case, the residual stress and welding distortion at the topside weldment was assumed to be initial imperfection. In accordance with FEA results, regardless of initial loading condition, tensile residual stress was found. However, the residual stress and welding distortion at the topside weldment produced under hogging condition was less than those of topside weldment under free loading state. That is, the amount of residual stress at the topside weldment decreased with an increase in the amount of tension load caused by hogging condition. It was because the compressive thermal strain at the topside weldment produced during welding was reduced by tensile load. However, the maximum stress range at the topside weldment under maximum hull girder bending moment was almost similar regardless of initial loading condition. So, if the problem related to the soundness of weldment is not introduced by initial load, the effect of initial loading condition during welding on fatigue strength of topside weldment could be negligible.

The influence of temperature on the material of concrete filled columns (CFCs) under axial loading has been quantitatively studied in this research. CFCs have many various advantages and disadvantages. One of the important inefficiency of classic CFCs design is the practical lack of hooped compression under the operational loads because of the fewer variables of Poisson's rate of concrete compared to steel. This is the reason why the holder tends to break away from the concrete core in elastic stage. It is also suggested to produce concrete filled steel tube columns with an initial compressed concrete core to surpass their design. Elevated temperatures have essentially reduced the strengths of steel tubes and the final capacity of CFCs exposed to fire. Thus, the computation of bearing capacity of concrete filled steel tube columns is studied here. Sometimes, the structures of concrete could be exposed to the high temperatures during altered times, accordingly, outcomes have shown a decrement in compressive-strength, then an increase with the reduction of this content. In addition, the moisture content at the minimal strength is declined with temperature rising. According to Finite Element (FE), the column performance assessment is carried out according to the axial load carrying capacities and the improvement of ductility and strength because of limitations. Self-stress could significantly develop the ultimate stiffness and capacity of concrete columns. In addition, the design equations for the ultimate capacity of concrete columns have been offered and the predictions satisfactorily agree with the numerical results. The proposed based model (FE model of PEC column) 65% aligns with the concrete exposed to high temperature. Therefore, computed solutions have represented a better perception of structural and thermal responses of CFC in fire.
