The commercial viability of heat exchanger is mainly dependent on its long-term fouling characteristic because the fouling increases the pressure loss and degrades the thermal performance of a heat exchanger. An experimental study was performed to investigate the characteristics of fluid flow and heat transfer in a fluidized bed heat exchanger with circulating various solid particles. The present work showed that the higher densities of particles had higher drag force coefficients, and the increases in heat transfer were in the order of sand, copper, steel, aluminum, and glass below Reynolds number of 5,000.
The internal cooling passage of a gas turbine blade can be modeled as a ribbed channel. Most studies have considered square ribs. However, the ribs can be rounded due to improper manufacturing or wear during the operation. Hence, we have studied two different rib geometries in this study, i.e. square and semicircle ribs. We have performed large eddy simulations (LES) and experiments to validate the results from the simulations. LES predicts the detailed flow and thermal features, which have not been captured by simulations using turbulence models. By investigating the instantaneous flow and thermal fields, we propose the mechanisms for the local heat transfer distribution between ribs. For both the geometries, heat transfer is enhanced by the entrainment of the cold fluid by the vortical motions and impingement of the entrained cold fluid on the ribs.

Flow over a bluff body is an attractive research field in thermal engineering. In the present study, laminar flow over a confined heated square cylinder using CuO-Water nanofluid is considered. Unsteady two-dimensional Navier-Stokes and energy equations are solved numerically using finite volume method (FVM). Recent correlations for the thermal conductivity and viscosity of nanofluids, which are function of nanoparticle volume fraction, temperature and nanoparticle diameter, have been employed. The results of numerical solution are obtained for Richardson number, nanoparticle volume fractions and nanoparticle diameters ranges of 0-1, 1-5% and 30-100 nm respectively for a fixed Reynolds number of Re = 150. At a given volume concentration, the investigations reveal that the decreasing in size of nanoparticles produces an increase in heat transfer rates from the square cylinder and a decrease in amplitude of the lift coefficient. Also, the increment of Nusselt number is more pronounced at higher concentrations and higher Richardson numbers.
This paper describes the control charcteristics of thermal/flow systems. In thermal/flow systems, the transport lag plays as a dead time causing a deterioration of the controllability. Besides this, such many parameters including the temperature, pressure, and flow rate affect the system response that a control scheme which can deal with multi-input is required. Particularly in a refrigerant compressor test facility, the evaporator and condenser interact each other so that the change in the evaporator pressure cause the condenser pressure to change or vice versa. Therefore, to control the evaporator pressure, not only the cooling water flow rate in the evaporator but also the coolant flow rate in the condenser is considered. Meanwhile, the conventional PID controllers, which is suitable for a single input system, shows a large overshoot for a disturbance input. In this work, the predictive control scheme is introduced and its applicability is discussed for thermal/flow systems.

Given the domestic situation, all nuclear power plants are located at the seaside, where interim storage sites are also likely to be located and maritime transportation is considered inevitable. Currently, Korea does not have an independently developed maritime transportation risk assessment code, and no research has been conducted to evaluate the release rate of radioactive waste from a submerged transportation cask in the sea. Therefore, secure technology is necessary to assess the impact of immersion accidents and establish a regulatory framework to assess, mitigate, and prevent maritime transportation accidents causing serious radiological consequences. The flow rate through a gap in a containment boundary should be calculated to determine the accurate release rate of radionuclides. The fluid flow through the micro-scale gap can be evaluated by combining the flow inside and outside the transportation cask. In this study, detailed computational fluid dynamic and simplified models are constructed to evaluate the internal flow in a transportation cask and to capture the flow and heat transfer around the transportation cask in the sea, respectively. In the future, fluid flow through the gap will be evaluated by coupling the models developed in this study.
Currently, the technology of $CO_2$ capture and storage (CCS) has become the main issue for climate change and global warming. Among CCS technologies, the prediction of $CO_2$ behavior underground is very critical for $CO_2$ storage design, especially for its safety. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to model and simulate $CO_2$ flow and its heat transfer characteristics in a storage site, for more accurate evaluation of the safety for $CO_2$ storage process. In the present study, as part of the storage design, a micro pore-scale model was developed to mimic real porous structure, and computational fluid dynamics was applied to calculate the $CO_2$ flow and thermal fields in the micro pore-scale porous structure. Three different configurations of 3-dimensional (3D) micro-pore structures were developed, and compared. In particular, the technique of assigning random pore size in 3D porous media was considered. For the computation, physical conditions such as temperature and pressure were set up, equivalent to the underground condition at which the $CO_2$ fluid was injected. From the results, the characteristics of the flow and thermal fields of $CO_2$ were scrutinized, and the influence of the configuration of the micro-pore structure on the flow and scalar transport was investigated.

A steam control valve is used to control the flow from the steam generator to the steam turbine in thermal and nuclear power plants. During startup and shutdown of the plant, the steam control valve is operated under a partial flow conditions. In such conditions, the valve opening is small and the pressure deference across the valve is large. As a result, the flow downstream of the valve is composed of separated unsteady transonic jets. Such flow patterns often cause undesirable large unsteady fluid force on the valve head and downstream pipe system. In the present study, various flow patterns are investigated in order to understand the characteristics of the unsteady flow around the valve. Experiments are carried out with simplified two-dimensional valve models. Two-dimensional unsteady flow simulations are conducted in order to understand the experimental results in detail. Scale effects on the flow characteristics are also examined. Results show three types of oscillating flow pattern and three types of static flow patterns.

Showerhead is used as a main part in the semiconductor equipment. The face plate flatness should remain constant and the cleaning performance must be gained to keep the uniformity level of etching or deposition in chemical vapor deposition process. High operating temperature or long period of thermal loading could lead the showerhead to be deformed thermally. In some case, the thermal deformation appears very sensitive to showerhead performance. This paper describes the methods for robust design using computational fluid dynamics. To reveal the influence of the post distribution on flow pattern in the showerhead cavity, numerical simulation was performed for several post distributions. The flow structure appears similar to an impinging flow near a centered baffle in showerhead cavity. We took the structure as an index to estimate diffusion path. A robust design to reduce the thermal deformation of showerhead can be achieved using post number increase without ill effect on flow. To prevent the showerhead deformation by heat loading, its face plate thickness was determined additionally using numerical simulation. The face plate has thousands of impinging holes. The design key is to keep pressure drop distribution on the showerhead face plate with the holes. This study reads the methodology to apply to a showerhead hole design. A Hagen-Poiseuille equation gives the pressure drop in a fluid flowing through such hole. The assumptions of the equation are the fluid is viscous-incompressible and the flow is laminar fully developed in a through hole. An equation can be expressed with radius R and length L related to the volume flow rate Q from the Hagen-Poiseuille equation, $Q={\pi}R4{\Delta}p/8{\mu}L$, where ${\mu}$ is the viscosity and ${\Delta}p$ is the pressure drop. In present case, each hole has steps at both the inlet and the outlet, and the fluid appears compressible. So we simplify the equation as $Q=C(R,L){\Delta}p$. A series of performance curves for a through hole with geometric parameters were obtained using two-dimensional numerical simulation. We obtained a relation between the hole diameter and hole length from the test cases to determine hole diameter at fixed hole length. A numerical simulation has been performed as a tool for enhancing showerhead robust design from flow structure. Geometric parameters for the design were post distribution and face plate thickness. The reinforced showerhead has been installed and its effective deposition profile is being shown in factory.
Natural circulation phenomena have been nowadays largely revisited aiming to investigate the performances of passive safety systems in carrying-out heat removal under accidental conditions. For this purpose, assessment studies using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and also 3D thermal-hydraulic system codes are considered at different levels of the design and safety demonstration issues. However, these tools have not being extensively validated for specific natural circulation flow regimes involving flow mixing, temperature stratification, flow recirculation and instabilities. In the present study, an experimental test case based on a small-scale pool test rig experiment performed by Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, is considered for code-to-code and code-to-experimental data comparison. The test simulation is carried out using the FLUENT and the 3D thermal-hydraulic system CATHARE-2 codes. The objective is to evaluate and compare their prediction capabilities with respect to the test conditions of the experiment. It was observed that, notwithstanding their numerical and modelling differences, similar agreement results are obtained. Nevertheless, additional investigations efforts are still needed for a better representation of the considered phenomena.
