  • The thermal expansion, thermal stability, mechanical strength and infrared radiative property of Al2TiO5-clay composites, prepared from synthesized Al2TiO5 and clay, were investigated to develop a material for far infrared radiators. The emittance of composites containing 10~50 wt% clay, heated at 1,20$0^{\circ}C$ for 3 h, increased with increasing clay content and emittance was about 0.3 and 0.92 in the ranges of 3,400~2,500 cm-1 and 2,500~400cm-1, respectively. The bulk density and bending strength of the Al2TiO5-clay composites increased with increasing clay content. 50 wt% Al2TiO5-50 wt% clay composite, heat-treated at 1,20$0^{\circ}C$, had an adequate strength for infrared radiators; 80 MPa. The degree of thermal expansion hysteresis decreased with increasing clay content and the mean thermal expansion coefficient increased with increasing clay content. The thermal expansion coefficient of 50 wt% Al2TiO5-50 wt% clay composite heated at 1,20$0^{\circ}C$ was 5.78$\times$10-6/$^{\circ}C$.

  • Sintered $Al_2TiO_5$ has a very low thermal expansion and an infrared radiative selectively emitting large amounts of far infrared rays. However, it is week in mechanical strength. Spectral infrared emittance, thermal expansion coefficient, and mechanical strength of $Al_2TiO_5$-clay composites were studied to develop a material for far infrared radiators. The composites containing 10~50 mass% Jungsan clay had high emittance in the range of 2,000~500cm-1. The bending strength of the $Al_2TiO_5$-clay composites increased with increasing clay content. The $Al_2TiO_5$-clay composites with a clay content of 50mass% and heat-treated at $1,200^{\circ}C$ had a large strength for infrared radiators ; 86MPa. The average linear thermal expansion coefficient from $200{\sim}1,000^{\circ}C$ of the 50mass% jungsan clay containing compo sited heat-treated at $1,200^{\circ}C$ was lower than $3.87{\times}10-6/^{\circ}C$.

  • Among the thermal analysis methods for Multi-Layer Insulation(MLI), effective emittance, diffusion MLI node and arithmetic MLI node methods are compared. The methods have been applied to the aluminum panel under the low earth orbit environment. TRASYS program is used for geometrical math modeling and SINDA program for thermal math modeling and temperature calculation. Test cases are selected according to MLI area on the panel. Temperature results are calculated and compared under the ratio of absorptivity and emissivity.

  • Variable emittance radiators can be used in a thermal management system in space because their total emittance changes depending on the temperature of the system. When the temperature of the system decreased, the emittance also decreased so as to minimize the heat loss to the environment. In contrast, when the temperature of the system increased, the emittance also increased such that radiation cooling could occur. Thermochromic materials, whose emittance is a function of the temperature, are often used in variable emittance radiators because no additional parts are needed. In this study, we fabricated a variable-emittance coating by using a sol-gel method based on LSMO ($La_{1-x}Sr_xMnO_3$) and experimentally characterized the emittance change with respect to temperature. Furthermore, we also examined the stability of LSMO film in space environments by exposing it to extremely low pressure and temperature.

  • Window is a critical component in the design of energy-efficient buildings. To minimize the heat loss, insulation performance of the glazing has to be improved. Manufacturing of vacuum glazing has been motivated by the possibility of making windows of very good thermal insulation properties for such applications. It is made by maintaining vacuum in the gap between two glass panes. Pillars are placed between them to withstand the atmospheric pressure. Edge covers are applied to reduce conduction through the edge. Accurate measurements have been made of the radiative heat transfer, the pillar conduction and the gas conduction using a guarded hot plate apparatus. Vacuum glazing is found to have low thermal conductance roughly below $1W/m^2K$. Among the heat transfer modes of residual gas conduction, conduction through support pillar and the radiative heat transfer between the glass panes, the last one is the most dominant to the overall thermal conductance. Vacuum glazing using very low emittance AI-coated glass has an overall thermal conductance of about $0.7W/m^2K$.

  • Black cobalt solar selective coatings were prepared by using an electroplating method. The changes in the optical properties of the black cobalt selective coating due to thermal degradation were analyzed by using the Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and spectrophotometer. The black cobalt selective coating was prepared on a copper substrate by using a synthesized electrolyte with $CoCl_2$ and KSCN at a current density of ${\sim}0.5A/dm^2$ for 45s ~ 60s. Its optical properties were a solar absorptance (${\alpha}$) of the order of 0.80 ~ 0.84 and a thermal emittance (${\epsilon}$) of 0.01. From the AES depth profile analysis of heated sample, thermal degradation of the black cobalt selective coating heated for 33 hours at temperature of $350^{\circ}C$ occurred primarily due to interdiffusion at interface of cobalt and copper substrate. This results were predictable that the ${\alpha}$ decreases due to the thermal oxidation and diffusion.

  • Cr-CrO cermet solar selective coatings with a double cermets layer film structure were prepared using a special direct current (dc) magnetron sputtering technology. The typical films structures from surface to bottom substrate were measured to be an $Al_2O_3$ anti-reflection layer on a double Cr-CrO cermet layer on an Al metal infrared reflection layer. Optical properties of optimized Cr-CrO cermet solar selective coating were absorptance (${\alpha}$) = 0.95 and emittance (${\varepsilon}$) = 0.10 ($100^{\circ}C$). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) image showed that Cr-CrO cermet film was very smooth and their grain size was also very small The results of thermal stability test showed that the Cr-CrO cermet solar selective coatings were stable for use at temperature of $400^{\circ}C$.

  • Black cobalt solar selective coatings were prepared by thermal oxidation of electroplated cobalt metal on copper and nickel substrates. The optical properties and structure of the black cobalt selective coating for solar energy utilizations were characterized by glow discharge spectrometry (GDS), ultraviolet-visible-near infrared (UV-VIS-NIR) spectrometer, atom force microscopy(AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). The optical properties of optimum black cobalt selective coating prepared on copper substrate were a solar absorptance of 0.82 and a thermal emittance of 0.01. From the GDS depth profile analysis of these coatings, the concentration of cobalt particles near the interface was higher than at the surface, but oxygen concentration at the surface was higher than at the interface. These results suggest that the selective absorption was dominated by this chemical composition variation in the coating. The surface of this film exhibited morphology with root-mean-square(rms) roughness of about 144.3nm. XPS measurements data showed that several phases of Co coexist($Co_3O_4$,CoO) in the film.

  • The chemical composition of the black Cr solar selective coatings electrodeposited were investigated for property analysis by using a XPS(X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) before and after annealing in air at $300^{\circ}C{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ for 120 hours. Black Cr selective coating exposed by solar radiation for 5 months was compared with annealed sample. In addition, The Cu solar selective coatings were prepared by thermal oxidation method for low temperature application. The samples obtained were characterized by using the optical reflectance measurements by using a spectrometer. Optical properties of oxidized Cu solar coatings were solar absorptance $({\alpha}){\simeq}0.62$ and thermal emittance $({\epsilon}){\simeq}0.41(100^{\circ}C)$. In the as-prepared Cr black selective coating, the surface of the coating was found to have Cr hydroxide and Cr. The Cr hydroxide of the major component was converted to $Cr_2O_3$ or $CrO_3$ form after annealing at $500^{\circ}C$ with the desorption of water molecules. The black Cr selective coating was degraded significantly at temperature of $500^{\circ}C$. The main optical degradation modes of this coating were diffusion of Cu substrate materials.

  • This paper discusses the capabilities of airborne remotely sensed data to detect and classify forest damades. In this work the AMS (Aircraft Multiband Scanner) was used to obtain digital imagery at 300m altitude for forest damage inventory in the Black Forest of Germany. MSS(Multispectral Scanner) digital numbers were converted to spectral emittance and radiance values in 8 spectral bands from the visible to the thermal infrared and submitted to a maximum-likelihood classification for : (1) tree species ; and. (2) damage classes. As expected, the resulted, the results of MSS data with high spatial resolution 0.75m$\times$0.75m enabled the detection and identification of single trees with different damages and were nearly equivalent to the truth information of ground checked data.
