In this paper distribution of welding residual stress on the double fillet welded joint which exits and not exits root gap, i.e. full penetration and partial penetration is investigated by two dimensional cunduct and thermal elasto-plastic analysis. And stress distribution on notch-tip of the structure where welding residual stress regarded as initial stress and then external load is added is also investigated.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the behavior of residual stress at the weldment of pressure vessel by local Post Weld Heat Treatment(PWHT). In order to do it, residual stress were measured before and after local PWHT by XRD on the test piece first. And then, the results of finite element(FE) analysis based on thermal-elasto-plastic-creep theories were verified by comparing with the measured results.
Zinc coated steel sheets have been widely used in automotive industry. High power laser welding has been used as an excellent welding means for thin sheets. The welding residual stress, which was brought in laser welding, causes making weak the mechanical strength. The purpose of this study is to get the residual stress distribution in various laser welding condition by FEM and verify the results by X-Ray diffraction. Welding residual stresses have been calculated by thermal elasto-plastic analysis using finite element method. Form the results, it can be known that the laser welding condition affects to distribution of the residual stress.
The residual stresses and. distortions of structures by welding exert negative effect on the safety of railroad structures. This investigation performs a thermal elasto-plastic analysis using finite element techniques to evaluate residual stresses in butted-welded joint. Considering this initial residual stresses, local stress and strain at the critical location (weld toe) during the loading were analyzed by elastic plastic finite element analysis. Fatigue crack initiation life and fatigue crack propagation life of butt-welded specimen were predicted by local strain approach and Neuber's role and Paris law. It is demonstrated that fatigue life estimates by local strain approach closely approximate the experimental results.
It has been well documented that plate forming is one of the most important processes in shipbuilding. In the most shipyards, the line heating method is primarily used for plate forming. Since the heating process is carried out for the curved plate and not for the flat plate, a curvature effect on the final deformation must be considered in deriving the simplified prediction models for deformation. This paper investigates the effect of curvature along the heating line on the deformation of the plate. First of all, results of numerical analysis are compared with these of a line-heating test, to justify the elasto-plastic analysis procedure for the present study, which shows good agreement. Then, the present numerical procedure is applied to flat and curved plate models, to investigate the curvature effect on the heat transfer characteristics and deformation by line heating.
Ships, structures on the ocean, bridges, and other structures tend to be large by the development of industry. These ultra thick plate were welded with large heat input, which causes welding stresses, deformation and buckling, so it has to be considered the weld design, safety, reliability. The welded residual stresses were produced and redistributed due to the effect of large heat input. The mechanical phenomenon has not been surely identified yet. In spite of the lack of the study on the box column, there are various types of steel frame such as I type, H type, + type and $\bigcirc$ type, used in high story building. In this study, we performed computer simulation with two dimensional heat conduction and plane deformation thermal elasto-plastic finite element computer program as changing the plate thickness to 100mm, 150mm and groove angle to $60^{\circ}C$, $45^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$ of corner joint in box column. And then, to identify mechanical phenomenon such as the phenomenon of thermal distribution, welding residual stresses and deformation and to decide optimum groove angle and welding condition. The main conclusion can be summarized as follows: 1) Since the groove angle has became cooling down rapidly due to its smaller value, the temperature slope was steeped somewhat. 2) The tensile stress within the welding direction stresses was somewhat decreased at the weld metal and HAZ, increasing of the groove angle. 3) The local stress concentration of the groove angle $60^{\circ}C$ was appeared smaller than groove angle $30^{\circ}$.

Fire is a continuous threat to FPSO topside modules as large amounts of oil and gas are passing through the modules. As a conventional measure to mitigate structural failure under fire, passive fire protection (PFP) coatings are widely used on main structural members. However, an excessive use of PFP coatings can cause considerable cost for material purchase, installation, inspection and maintenance. Long installation time can be a risk since the work should be done nearly at the last fabrication stage. Thus, the minimal use of PFP can be beneficial to the reduction of construction cost and the avoidance of schedule delay. This paper presents a few case studies on how different applications of PFP have influence on collapse time of a FPSO module structure. A series of heat analysis and thermal elasto-plastic FE analysis are performed for different PFP coatings and the resultant collapse time and the amount of PFP coatings are compared with each other.
A three-dimensional finite element model has been developed to simulate the MIG P/S welding process of two aluminum plates. The finite element calculations are performed using ANSYS finite element code, which takes into account the thermal and mechanical non-linear material properties. The results of finite element analysis compared with those of experiment to show its validity in view of distortions. Parametric studies are carried out on the validated model to assess the effects of various factors on the final residual distortion. Large deformations, temperature dependent material properties are included in the model. Finally, the formulas of fitting curves of angular distortion transverse shrinkage, and longitudinal shrinkage have been proposed.
Prediction and control of the thermal distortion is particularly important for the design and manufacture of welded thin metal structure. In this study, numerical computations are performed to analyze effect of structure section shape and weld line location on distortion. In addition, this study aims to develop a thermal elasto-plastic simulation using finite element method to predict distortion, with particular emphasis on bending deformation generated in outline welding of a thin box structure. From the numerical analysis, it was revealed that the section shape and weld line location play an important role on the welding distortion. Among 3 types of section shape design proposed in this study, the least deformation remained in the two path welded structure.
Welding distortions of large steel structures had mainly been estimated with some simplified formula obtained by lots of experience and numerical analyses for small steel structures. However, the large structures would have different characteristics of distortion with welding because of their own stiffness coming from the size itself. Therefore, in order to find some measures for preventing welding distortion of large structure, it is requite in advance to precisely analysis thermal stress and distortion during welding of the structure. Numerical analysis for larger structure has been known to take large amount of calculation time and have a poor convergency problem during the thermo-elasto-plastic calculation. In this study, a hybrid method is proposed to analysis the thermal stress and distortion of a large steel plate with the finite element analysis by incorporating with temperature distribution of the plate calculated by an analytical solution. The proposed method revealed that the thermo-mechanical analysis for welding of the large structure could be performed with a good convergence and produced precise results with much reduced time consumption.
