The effects of bond coat species on the growth behavior of thermally grown oxide (TGO) layer in thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) was investigated through furnace cyclic test (FCT). Two types of feedstock powder with different particle sizes and distributions, AMDRY 962 and AMDRY 386-4, were used to prepare the bond coat, and were formed using air plasma spray (APS) process. The top coat was prepared by APS process using zirconia based powder containing 8 wt% yttria. The thicknesses of the top and bond coats were designed and controlled at 800 and $200{\mu}m$, respectively. Phase analysis was conducted for TBC specimens with and without heat treatment. FCTs were performed for TBC specimens at $1121^{\circ}C$ with a dwell time of 25 h, followed by natural air cooling for 1 h at room temperature. TBC specimens with and without heat treatment showed sound conditions for the AMDRY 962 bond coat and AMDRY 386-4 bond coat in FCTs, respectively. The growth behavior of TGO layer followed a parabolic mode as the time increased in FCTs, independent of bond coat species. The influences of bond coat species and heat treatment on the microstructural evolution, interfacial stability, and TGO growth behavior in TBCs are discussed.

Accelerated life tests (ALTs) are extensively used to determine the reliability of a product in a short period of time. Test units are subject to elevated stresses which yield quick failures. ALT can be carried out using constant-stress, step-stress, progressive-stress, cyclic-stress or random-stress loading and their various combinations. An ALT with linearly increasing stress is ramp-stress test. Much of the previous work on planning ALTs has focused on constant-stress, step-stress, ramp-stress schemes and their various combinations where the stress is generally increased. This paper presents an optimal design of ramp soak-stress ALT model which is based on the principle of Thermal cycling. Thermal cycling involves applying high and low temperatures repeatedly over time. The optimal plan consists in finding out relevant experimental variables, namely, stress rates and stress rate change points, by minimizing variance of reliability function with pre-specified mission time under normal operating conditions. The Burr type XII life distribution and time-censored data have been used for the purpose. Burr type XII life distribution has been found appropriate for accelerated life testing experiments. The method developed has been explained using a numerical example and sensitivity analysis carried out.

The Thermal Barrier Coation(TBC) to improve the that barrier and wear resistant propenrty in high temperature ofthe aircraftength between the accumlation of the aircraft engine and the automobile engine has usually the two layer structure. One is a creamic top layer for heat insulation and the other is a metal bond layer to facilitate the bond strength between the top ceramic layer and the substrate. But, the coated layers should be peeled off because of the accumulation of the thermal stress by the differance of the thermal expantion coefficient between metal and ceramics in a hrat cyclic environment. In this study, the intermediate layer by plasm spray process was introduced to reduce the thermal stress. The powders of plasm spray coating were the Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ), the Magnesia Stabillized Zirconia(MSZ) and NiCrAlY. the intermediate layer was sprayed with the powders of the bond cast for the purpose of test were executed. The high temperature wear resistance tends to decreasnceee wear and thermal shock test were exeucuted. The high temperature were resistance of the YSZ TBC is better that of the MSZ TBC. The wearrsistance tends to decrease accoring to incresing the temperature between $400^{\circ}C$to $600^{\circ}C$. The thermal shock life of the 3 layer TBC with YSZ top casting was the most outstanding thermal shock rsisstasnce. This means that the intermediate layer should play an importnat roll to alleviate the diffrerence of the thermal expansion coef frcients between metallic layer and cermics layer.

This paper presents the fatigue characteristics of LIPCA (LIghtweight Piezo-Composite Actuator) device system. The LIPCA device system is composed of a piezoelectric ceramic layer and fiber reinforced lightweight composite layers. Typically a PZT ceramic layer is sandwiched by a top fiber layer with low CTE (coefficient of thermal expansion) and base layers with high CTE. The advantages of the LIPCA design are weight reduction by using the lightweight fiber reinforced plastic layers without compromising the generation of high force and large displacement and design flexibility by selecting the fiber direction and the size of prepreg layers. To predict the degradation of actuation performance of LIPCA due to fatigue, the cyclic electric loading tests using PZT specimens were performed and the strain for a given excitation voltage was measured during the test. The results from the PZT fatigue test were implemented into CLPT (Classical Laminated Plate Theory) model to predict the degradation of LIPCA's actuation displacement. The fatigue characteristic of PZT was measured using a test system composed of a supporting jig, a high voltage power supplier, data acquisition board, PC, and evaluated.

The existing bridge with deck joint has many problems during construction and maintenance. To overcome these difficulties, an integral bridge, which is defined as the practice of constructing bridges without deck joints, is proposed in this study. A test bridge with 3 spans of PC beam was selected to verify the function of the bridge and is under construction. Characteristics of integral bridge are followings: $\circled1$ Flexible H-piles under the abutment are installed to accommodate thermal movements of the superstructures of bridge. $\circled2$ PC beam of the superstructure and the abutment are integrated. $\circled3$ The existing approach and relief slabs are applied to minimize the stress transfer occurred from the bridge deck to the pavement. $\circled4$ A cyclic control joint is installed between approach and relief slabs to absorb the thermal movement. $\circled5$ It is used a dual direction bearing which is cheaper than single direction bearing and has a good workability as well. It is also installed a shear block on the top of pier coping to protect the lateral movement caused by temperature change and earthquake.
The thermal instability of Al2TiO5 Ceramics was contrlled by solid solution with MgO SiO2 and ZrO2 through electrofusion in an arc furnace. The thermal expansion properties of Al2TiO5 composites show the hysteresis due to the strong anisotropy of The crystal axes of these material. These phenomena are ex-plained by the opening and closing of microcracks. The difference in microcracking temperatures e.g 587.6(ATG2), 405.9(ATG3) and 519.7$^{\circ}C$(ATG4) is caused by the difference in grain size and stabilizer type. The thermal shock behaviour under cyclic conditions between 750-1400-75$0^{\circ}C$ show no change in mi-crostructure and phase assemblage for all three stabilized specimens. After the thermal loading test at 110$0^{\circ}C$ for 100hrs. ATG1 and ATG2 materials decomposes completely to its components corundum and ru-tile in both cases. However with approximatelly 20% retention of the Al2TiO5 Thus in order to prevent decomposition of the stabilized material in the critical temperature range 800-130$0^{\circ}C$ it must be traversed within a short period of time.
Fe-Ni alloy thin films with about 3.5 $\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness were successfully grown on Al-killed steel substrates employing DC magnetron sputtering method, and then the4 film properties were characterized. The deposited film exhibited a fibre texture structure with the relationship of ${110}_\textrm{film}//{111}_\textrm{substrate}$. We found that the adhesion between the film and the substrate was fairly good considering no debonding behavior after the thermal cyclic test of 5,000 times from room temperature to $200^{\circ}C$. Also we found that the Fe-Ni alloy deposition induced a significant decrease of thermal expansion in the film processing, a new material system with much lower thermal expansion coefficient which can be applied more as shadow mask materials than an Al-killed steel sheet.

This paper proposes a noncontact thermography technique for fatigue crack evaluation under a cyclic tensile loading. The proposed technique identifies and localizes an invisible fatigue crack without scanning, thus making it possible to instantaneously evaluate an incipient fatigue crack. Based on a thermoelastic theory, a new fatigue crack evaluation algorithm is proposed for the fatigue crack-tip localization. The performance of the proposed algorithm is experimentally validated. To achieve this, the cyclic tensile loading is applied to a dog-bone shape aluminum specimen using a universal testing machine, and the corresponding thermal responses induced by thermoelastic effects are captured by an infrared camera. The test results confirm that the fatigue crack is well identified and localized by comparing with its microscopic images.
Vacuum swing adsorption (VSA) is a promising treatment method for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This study focuses on a VSA process for regenerating activated carbon spent with VOCs, and then investigates its adsorption capacities. Toluene was selected as the test VOC molecule, and the VSA regeneration experiments results were compared to the thermal swing adsorption process. Cyclic adsorption-desorption experiments were performed using a lab-scale apparatus with commercial activated carbon (Samchully Co.). The VSA regeneration was performed in air (0.5 L/min) at 363.15 K and 13,332 Pa. The comparative results depicted that in terms of VSA regeneration, it was found that after the fifth regeneration, about a 90% regeneration ratio was maintained. These experiments thus confirm that the VSA regeneration process has good recovery while operating at low temperatures (363.15 K) and 13,332 Pa.
A thermal barrier coating (TBC) with self-healing property for cracks was proposed to improve reliability during gas turbine operation, including structural design. Effect of healing agent on crack propagation behavior in TBCs with and without buffer layer was investigated through furnace cyclic test (FCT). Molybdenum disilicide ($MoSi_2$) was used as the healing agent; it was encapsulated using a mixture of tetraethyl orthosilicate and sodium methoxide. Buffer layers with composition ratios of 90 : 10 and 80 : 20 wt%, using yttria stabilized zirconia and $MoSi_2$, respectively, were prepared by air plasma spray process. After generating artificial cracks in TBC samples by using Vickers indentation, FCTs were conducted at $1100^{\circ}C$ for a dwell time of 40 min., followed by natural air cooling for 20 min. at room temperature. The cracks were healed in the buffer layer with the healing agent of $MoSi_2$, and it was found that the thermal reliability of TBC can be enhanced by introducing the buffer layer with healing agent in the top coat.
