SOFC system is often subject to thermal cycle condition during normal start/stop, shutdown, and emergence state. Under the thermal cycle condition of heating and cooling, the SOFC components expand or shrink, which produces thermal stress and thermal shock. The SOFC performance is degraded by the thermal factors. To protect SOFC system from the thermal degradation, the optimum thermal condition must be clarified. In this study, to examine the thermal cycle characteristics, we fabricated single cells of planar SOFC with an area of $5{\times}5cm$. The electrolyte and PEN were tested under thermal cycle conditions in the range of$ 2-8^{\circ}C/min$. After thermal cycle test. crack creation of the components were examined using ultraviolet apparatus. No crack in the electrolyte and PEN were observed. The single cell system with alumina frame were also tested under thermal cycle conditions of 2, 3, $4^{\circ}C/min$. The single cell was fractured at the thermal cycle of 3 and $4^{\circ}C/min$ and the optimum condition of the thermal cycle to be found below $2^{\circ}C/min$.
: A DNA analysis system based on fluorescence analysis has to have a DNA amplifying thermal cycle system. DNA amplification is executed by the temperature control. Accuracy of fluorescence analysis is influenced by the temperature control technology. For that reason, the temperature control is core technology in developing the DNA analysis system. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to develop the hardware to apply thermoelectric module to the DNA amplifying thermal cycle system. In order to verify the developed hardware for controlling the temperature of thermoelectric module, a DNA amplifying thermal cycle test was performed. From the test, the developed hardware controlled the temperature of thermoelectric module successfully. Therefore, it is expected that the developed hardware can be applied to the DNA amplifying thermal cycle system.

In order to recognize thermal efficiency and power improvement in case that diesel cycle is turned into diesel-atkinson cycle, the fuel-air diesel-atkinson cycle considered gas exchange process is analyzed non-dimensionally and thermodynamically. As a result, in case of diesel-atkinson cycle, as expansion ratio is increased, thermal efficiency and mean effective pressure is increased and it has maximum value at Rec=1. When diesel cycle is turned into diesel-atkinson cycle by late intake valve closing timing, thermal efficiency and power is decreased because of the decline of effective compression ratio and intake airflow, but it could be compensated by increase of compression ratio or super-charged. In case compression ratio is compensated, Rec appears 1 around 100$^{\circ}$ ABDC, and it is expected that thermal efficiency is enhanced by 14.3% compared with conventional diesel cycle. In case compression ratio and intake airflow are compensated simultaneously, super-charged pressure is demanded 2.06bar at Rec=1 and it is more efficient when only compression ratio is compensated in the view point of thermal efficiency.
The temperature distribution in the weldment is not uniform because a weldment is locally heated. Thermal plastic deformation results from the local expansion and shrinkage by the heating and cooling of metal. Therefore, residual stresses and distortion occur in the weldment. In this study, we had conducted on the weld thermal cycle simulation that is supposed as the HAZ on SS400 steel and STS304 steel. The residual stresses that were obtained from the drawing and the weld thermal cycle simulation were estimated by X-ray diffraction. We also carried out ultrasonic test for the weld thermal cycle simulated specimens, and then conducted on nondestructive evaluation by the ultrasonic parameters obtained ultrasonic test. From the results, residual stresses of weld thermal cycle simulated specimens after the residual stress removal heat treatment are lower than that of the drawing.

As a fundamental study on effects of thermal-cycles on residual stress of ceramics/metal joints, residual stresses in $Si_3N_4$/SUS304 joint specimens were measured before and single thermal-cycle by X-ray diffraction method and finite element method(FEM). The residual stress was found to increase after single thermal-cycle, which was agreeable with the results of residual stress measurement by X-ray diffraction method and residual stress analysis by finite element method. After the residual stress measurement, 4-point bending tests were performed. The relationship between the bending strength, the thermal-cycle temperature and hold time was examined. The bending strength was found to decrease with the increase of residual stress in linear relation.

The thermodynamic performance of closed ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) cycle with 1 MW gross power was evaluated to obtain the basic data for the optimal design of OTEC. The basic thermodynamic model for OTEC is Rankine cycle and the thermal effluent from power plant was used for the heat source of evaporator. The cycle performance such as efficiency, heat exchanger capacity, etc. was analyzed on the temperature variation of thermal effluent. The saturated pressure of evaporator increased with respect to the increase of thermal effluent temperature, so the cycle efficiency increased and necessary capacity of evaporator and condenser decreased under 1 MW gross power. As the thermal effluent temperature increases about $15^{\circ}C$, the cycle efficiency increased approximately 44%. So, it was revealed that thermal effluent from power plant is important heat source for OTEC plant. Also, if there is an available waste heat, it can be transferred heat to the working fluid form the evaporator through heat exchanger and cycle efficiency will be increased.
There has been a growing interest in the recent time for the development of solar power tower plants, which are mainly used for utility scale power generation. Combined heat and power (CHP) is an efficient and clean approach to generate electric power and useful thermal energy from a single heat source. The waste heat from the topping Brayton cycle is utilized in the bottoming HRSG cycle for driving steam turbine and also to produce process steam so that efficiency of the cycle is increased. A thermal storage system is likely to add greater reliability to such plants, providing power even during non-peak sunshine hours. This paper presents a conceptual configuration of a solar power tower combined heat and power plant with a topping air Brayton cycle. A simple downstream Rankine cycle with a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and a process heater have been considered for integration with the solar Brayton cycle. The conventional GT combustion chamber is replaced with a solar receiver. The combined cycle has been analyzed using energy as well as exergy methods for a range of pressure ratio across the GT block. From the thermodynamic analysis, it is found that such an integrated system would give a maximum total power (2.37 MW) at a much lower pressure ratio (5) with an overall efficiency exceeding 27%. The solar receiver and heliostats are the main components responsible for exergy destruction. However, exergetic performance of the components is found to improve at higher pressure ratio of the GT block.
In this study, heating performance of the air-cooled heat pump with vapor-injection (VI) cycles, re-heater and solar heat storage tank was investigated experimentally. Devices used in the experiment were comprised of a VI compressor, re-heater, economizer, variable evaporator, flat-plate solar collector for hot water, thermal storage tank, etc. As working fluid, refrigerant R410A for heat pump and propylene glycol (PG) for solar collector were used. In this experiment, heating performance was compared by three cycles, A, B and C. In case of Cycle B, heat exchange was conducted between VI suction refrigerant and inlet refrigerant of condenser by re-heater (Re-heater in Fig. 3, No. 3) (Cycle B), and Cycle A was not use re-heater on the same operating conditions. In case of Cycle C, outlet refrigerant from evaporator go to thermal storage tank for getting a thermal energy from solar thermal storage tank while re-heater also used. As a result, Cycle C reached the target temperature of water in a shorter time than Cycle B and Cycle A. In addition, it was founded that, as for the coefficient of heating performance($COP_h$), the performance in Cycle C was improved by 13.6% higher than the performance of Cycle B shown the average $COP_h$ of 3.0 and by 18.9% higher than the performance of Cycle A shown the average $COP_h$ of 2.86. From this results, It was confirmed that the performance of heat pump system with refrigerant re-heater and VI cycle can be improved by applying solar thermal energy as an auxiliary heat source.

Turbulent mixing of hot and cold coolants is one of the possible causes of high cycle thermal fatigue in piping systems of nuclear power plants. A typical situation for such mixing appears in turbulent flow through a T-junction. Since the high cycle thermal fatigue caused by thermal striping was not considered in the piping fatigue design in several nuclear power plants, it is very important to evaluate the effect of thermal striping on the integrity of mixing tees. In the present work, before conducting detailed evaluation, three thermal striping evaluation methodology suggested by EPRI, JSME and NESC are analyzed. Then, a by-pass pipe connected to the shutdown cooling system heat exchanger is investigated by using these evaluation methodology. Consequently, the resulting thermal stresses and the fatigue life of the mixing tee are reviewed and compared to each other. Futhermore, the limitation of each methodology are also presented in this paper.
