The thermal characteristics of a disk such as temperature distribution, thermal behaviours and thermal stress during a braking operation has been analyzed for a high-speed train using the finite element method. The maximum stress for a pad loaded against a disk was occurred at the trailing and leading edges of the disk pad at the underlayer-backplate interface. The FEM results indictate that the thermal characterisics of the spot type pad shows good performance compared with those of the flat type pad. Thus, the spot type pad in brake system may be recommended for the high-speed train system.
In this paper, the thermal buckling and postbuckling behaviour of composite beam with embedded shape memory alloy (SMA) wires are investigated experimentally and analytically. The results of thermal buckling tests on uniformly heated, clamped, composite beam embedded with SMA wire actuators are presented and discussed in consideration of geometric imperfections, slenderness ratio of beam and embedding position of SMA wire actuators. The shape recovery force can reduce the thermal expansion of composite laminated beam, which result in increment of the critical buckling temperature and reduction of the lateral deflection of postbuckling behaviours. It is presented quantitatively on the temperature-load-deflection behaviour records how the shape recovery force affects the thermal buckling. The cross tangential method is suggested to calculate the critical buckling temperature on the temperature-deflection plot. Based on the experimental analysis, the new formula is also proposed to describe the critical buckling temperature of a laminated composite beam with embedded SMA wire actuators.

Thermal effects are significant loads for assessing concrete dam behaviour during operation. A new methodology to estimate thermal loads on concrete dams taking into account processes which were previously unconsidered, such as: the evaporative cooling, the night radiating cooling or the shades, has been recently reported. The application of this novel approach in combination with a three-dimensional finite element method to solve the heat diffusion equation led to a precise characterization of the thermal field inside the dam. However, that approach may be computationally expensive. This paper proposes the use of a new one-dimensional model based on an explicit finite difference scheme which is improved by means of the reported methodology for computing the heat fluxes through the dam faces. The improved model has been applied to a case study where observations from 21 concrete thermometers and data of climatic variables were available. The results are compared with those from: (a) the original one-dimensional finite difference model, (b) the Stucky-Derron classical one-dimensional analytical solution, and (c) a three-dimensional finite element method. The results of the improved model match well with the observed temperatures, in addition they are similar to those obtained with (c) except in the vicinity of the abutments, although this later is a considerably more complex methodology. The improved model have a better performance than the models (a) and (b), whose results present larger error and bias when compared with the recorded data.
Experimental isotherm compressive tests show that concrete behaviour is dependent on temperature. The aim of such tests is to reproduce how concrete will behave under environmental changes within a moderate range of temperature. In this paper, a novel constitutive elastic damage behaviour law is proposed based on a free energy with an apparent damage depending on temperature. The proposed constitutive behaviour leads to classical theory of thermo-elasticity at small strains. Fixed elastic mechanical characteristics and fixed evolution law of damage independent of temperature and the material volume element size are considered. This approach is applied to compressive tests. The model predicts compressive strength and secant modulus of elasticity decrease as temperature increases. A power scaling law is assumed for specific entropy as function of the specimen size which leads to a volume size effect on the stress-strain compressive behaviour. The proposed model reproduces theoretical and experimental results from literature for tempertaures ranging between $20^{\circ}C$ and $70^{\circ}C$. The effect of the difference in the coefficient of thermal expansion between the mortar and coarse aggregates is also considered which gives a better agreement with FIB recommendations. It is shown that this effect is of a second order in the considered moderate range of temperature.
The purpose of this study is to compare the effect on the thermal stratification under various aspect ratios in the solar storage tank using FLUENT. Numerical calculations of three designs with different aspect ratio were carried out to show the behaviour of stratification in a solar storage tank. The calculation results show that the thermal stratification of the 2.5:1 aspect ratio solar storage tank can be 6.22% higher then that of the 1.5:1 aspect ratio solar storage tank and 2.68% higher then that of the 2:1 aspect ratio solar storage tank.
A CFD analysis for a thermal mixing experiment during steam jet discharge was performed to develop the analysis methodology for the thermal mixing between steam and subcooled water and to find the optimized numerical method. In the CFD analysis, the steam condensation phenomena by a direct contact was modelled by the so-called condensation region model. The comparison of the CFD results with the test data showed a good agreement as a whole, but a small temperature difference was locally found at some locations. However, the commercial CFD code of CFX4.4 together with the condensation region model can simulate the thermal mixing behaviour reasonably well when a sufficient number of mesh distribution and a proper numerical method are adopted
Thermomechanical analysis is conducted on the radioactive repository in deep rock mass considering the in-situ stress, excavation and thermal loading of a radioactive waste. Thermomechanical properties of a discontinuous rock mass are estimated by a theoretical method so called sequential analysis. Using the estimated properties as input for finite element analysis, the influence on temperature distribution and thermal stress is analyzed within the scope of 2-dimensional steady state and transient heat transfer and coupled thermal elastic plastic behaviour. Granitic rock mass is taken for this analysis. The analysis is done for two different rock mass conditions, i.e. continuous-homogeneous and highly jointed conditions, for the purpose of comparison. In the case of steady state, the extent of disturbed zone around the storage tunnel due to the heat production of the spent-fuel canister varies depending on the thermomechanical properties of the rock mass. In the case of transient analyses, the response of the jointed rock mass to the thermal loading after radioactive waste disposal varies significantly with time, resulting in dramatic changes in the both size and location of disturbed zone.

Thermal management is very important for the success of high density circuit design in LTCC. In this paper, LTCC substrates containing thermal via and pad were fabricated in order to study the influence of the thermal dissipation. To realize the accurate thermal analysis for structure design, a series of simple thermal conductivity measurement by laser flash method and parametric numerical analysis have been carried out. The LTCC substrate including via and Ag pad has good thermal conductivity over 103 W/mK which is 44% value of pure Ag material. Thermal behaviors with via arrays, size and density in the LTCC substrate were studied by numerical method.

The free and live load-forced vibration behaviour of porous functionally graded (PFG) higher order nanobeams in the thermal and magnetic fields is investigated comprehensively through this work in the framework of nonlocal strain gradient theory (NLSGT). The porosity effects on the dynamic behaviour of FG nanobeams is investigated using four different porosity distribution models. These models are exploited; uniform, symmetrical, condensed upward, and condensed downward distributions. The material characteristics gradation in the thickness direction is estimated using the power-law. The magnetic field effect is incorporated using Maxwell's equations. The third order shear deformation beam theory is adopted to incorporate the shear deformation effect. The Hamilton principle is adopted to derive the coupled thermomagnetic dynamic equations of motion of the whole system and the associated boundary conditions. Navier method is used to derive the analytical solution of the governing equations. The developed methodology is verified and compared with the available results in the literature and good agreement is observed. Parametric studies are conducted to show effects of porosity parameter; porosity distribution, temperature rise, magnetic field intensity, material gradation index, non-classical parameters, and the applied moving load velocity on the vibration behavior of nanobeams. It has been showed that all the analyzed conditions have significant effects on the dynamic behavior of the nanobeams. Additionally, it has been observed that the negative effects of moving load, porosity and thermal load on the nanobeam dynamics can be reduced by the effect of the force induced from the directed magnetic field or can be kept within certain desired design limits by controlling the intensity of the magnetic field.
