  • A study has been performed to investigate the thermo-mechanical effects of thermal barrier coating on liquid rocket regenerative cooling chamber using finite element analysis. Two kinds of thermal barrier coatings were studied on the same loading condition: first, NiCrAlY-$ZrO_2$, coating which is currently applied to the developing combustion chamber and second, Ni-Cr coating which might be applied in the future. Analysis results showed that NiCrAlY-$ZrO_2$ coating has better decreasing effect of temperature than the Ni-Cr coating. As a results, temperature and deformation of the cooling channel in the NiCrAlY-$ZrO_2$ coating were also less than those of the Ni-Cr coating. The Ni-Cr coating has no effect on a structural stability of the outer jacket but the NiCrAlY-$ZrO_2$ coating reduced the effective stress of the outer jacket and enhanced the structural stability of the chamber.

  • Periodical thermal shock can introduce defects in thermal barrier coating made by layers of CoNiCrAlY bond coating(BC) and $ZrO_2-8wt%Y_2O_3$ ceramic top coating(TC) on Inconel-738 substrate using plasma spraying. Thermal shock test is performed by severe condition that is to heat until $1000^{\circ}C$ and cool until $20^{\circ}C$. As the number of cycle is increased, the fatigue by thermal shock is also increased. After test, the micro-structures and mechanical characteristics of thermal barrier coating were investigated by SEM, XRD. The TGO layer of $Al_2O_3$ is formed between BC and TC by periodical thermal shock test, and its change in thickness is inspected by eddy current test(ECT). By ECT test, it is shown that TGO and micro-crack can be detected and it is possible to predict the life of thermal barrier coating.

  • In this paper, the process of electro Ni and electro Cr plating is studied for the purpose of thermal barrier to protect the inner wall combustion chamber. The chamber is under the environment of very high temperature and high pressure when propellants burn in there. As one of the thermal barrier coatings, Zr-based thermal spray coating has been applied to the chamber. However, peeling of coating layer can occur under such a hard condition because of the difference of thermal expansion coefficients between the ceramic and the metallic wall. We study the characteristics of Ni-Cr coating and establish its process. It is found that the thickness of over $100{\mu}m$ of Ni and Cr coating layers with the uniformity of ${\pm}10%$ can be obtained with the used of as-developed plating bath.

  • This paper presents a review study for energy-efficient gas turbines (GTs) with cycles which contributes significantly towards sustainable usage. Nonetheless, these progressive engines, operative at turbine inlet temperatures as high as $1600^{\circ}C$, require the employment of highly creep resistant materials for use in hotter section components of gas turbines like combustion chamber and blades. However, the gas turbine obtain its driving power by utilizing the energy of treated gases and air which is at piercing temperature and pushing by expanding through the several rings of steady and vibratory blades. Since the turbine blades works at very high temperature and pressure, high stress concentration are observed on the blades. With the increasing demand of service, to provide adequate efficiency and power within the optimized level, turbine blades are to be made of those materials which can withstand high thermal and working load condition for longer cycle time. This paper depicts the recent developments in the field of implementing the best suited materials for the GTs, selection of proper Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC), fracture analysis and experiments on failed or used turbine blades and several other designing and operating factors which are effecting the blade life and efficiency. It is revealed that Nickel based Superalloys were promising, Cast Iron with Zirconium and Pt-Al coatings are used as best TBC material, material defects are the foremost and prominent reason for blade failure.

  • For more effective temperature control of atmospheric plasma sprayed (APS) zirconia thermal barrier coating, understanding of the parameters, which influence the substrate temperature, is essential and also more numerical results based on the experimental data are required. This study aims to investigate the substrate temperature control during an APS process. The APS process deals with air-cooled systems, plasma-gas flow, powder feed rate, robot velocity, and substrate effect on the substrate surface temperature control during the process. This systematic approach will help to handle the temperature control, and thus lead to better coating quality.

  • In this study, two-layer thermal barrier coatings composed of plasma sprayed 0.3mm $ZrO_2(8wt% Y_2o_3)$ ceramic coating layer and O.lmm $NiCrAlCoY_20_3$ bond coating layer on AISI 316 were investigated microstructure of the coating, oxidation of the metallic bond coating and adhesive strength to evaluate the durability of coating layer after cyclic and isothermal test at 90$0^{\circ}C$. And quantitative phase analysis of $ZrO_2(8wt% Y_2o_3)$ ceramic coating was performed as a function of thermal exposure time using XRD technique. The results showed that the amount of m - 2rO, phase in the coating was slightly increased with increasing thermal exposure time at 90$0^{\circ}C$. The c/a ratio of t' - $ZrO_2$ in the as-sprayed coating was 1.0099 and slightly increased to 1.0115 after 100 hours heat treatment. It was believed that $Y_2O_3$ in high yttria tetragonaJ(t') was transformed to low yttria tetragonaJ(t) by $Y_2O_3$ diffusion with increasing thermal exposure time. The adhesive strength was gradually decreased as thermal exposure time increased. After the isothermal test, the failure predominantly occured in ceramic coating layer. On the other hand. the specimens after cyclic thermal test were mostly failed at bond coating/ceramic coating interface. The failure was oeeured by decreasing the bond strength between bond coating and oxide scale which were formed by oxidation of the metallic elements within bond coating and by thermal stress due to thermal expansion mismatches between the oxide scale and ceramic coating.

  • Gadolinium zirconate, $Gd_2Zr_2O_7$, is one of the most promising candidates for replacing yttira-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) in thermal barrier coating (TBC) applications due to its low thermal conductivity and chemical stability at high temperature. In this study, rare-earth zirconate ceramics in the $GdO_{1.5}-ZrO_2$ system with reduced gadolinia contents were fabricated via solid-state reaction as well as hot-pressing at $1800^{\circ}C$. The phase formation, microstructure, and thermo-physical properties of these oxides were examined. The potential application of $GdO_{1.5}-ZrO_2$ ceramics for TBC was also discussed.

  • The corrosion of steel rebar embedded in the coastal areas is corroding once the chloride ions ingress through the pores of the concrete. Therefore, in the present study, a 100 ㎛ thick Al and Zn coating was deposited by an arc thermal spray process onto the steel. The corrosion studies of these deposited coatings were assessed in 3.5 wt.% NaCl contaminated concrete pore (CP) solution with immersion periods. The results show that the Al coating is more corrosion resistance compared to the Zn coating attributed to the formation of gibbsite (γ-Al(OH)3) whereas Zn coating exhibits Zn(OH)2 onto the coating surface as passive layer. The Zn(OH)2 is readily soluble in an alkaline solution. Alternatively, γ-Al(OH)3 on the Al coating surface is less solubility in the alkaline pH, which further provides barrier protection against corrosion.

  • Lanthanum/gadolinium zirconate coatings are deposited via suspension plasma spray with suspensions fabricated by a planetary mill and compared with hot-pressed samples via solid-state reaction. With increase in processing time of the planetary mill, the mean size and BET surface area change rapidly in the case of lanthanum oxide powder. By using suspensions of planetary-milled mixture between lanthanum or gadolinium oxide and nano zirconia, dense thick coatings with fully-developed pyrochlore phases are obtained. The possibilities of these SPS-prepared coatings for TBC application are also discussed.
