  • The ANSI recently adopted normalized site attenuation(NSA) as a validation procedure of open area test sites. In this paper, the theoretical NSA values specified in the truth vlues of NSA were calculated for an ideal test site when tuned dipoles are used. A method of moments technique is employed to evaluate these NSA values. The calculated NSA values are more accurate than that of the ANSI.

Modal analysis of eccentric shells with fluid-filled annulus

  • Investigated in this study are the modal characteristics of the eccentric cylindrical shells with fluid-filled annulus. Theoretical method is developed to find the natural frequencies of the shell using the finite Fourier expansion, and their results are compared with those of finite element method to verify the validation of the method developed. The effect of eccentricity on the modal characteristics of the shells is investigated using a finite element modeling.

Understanding the Determinants of Behavioral Intentions towards Adoption of Web 2.0 Tools in Workplaces : An Empirical Study

  • More and more employees are implementing the use of emerging Web 2.0 tools such as blogs, wikis, social networks, etc in workplaces. However, their attitudes towards adoption of Web 2.0 tools in workplaces still lack theoretical support. The purpose of this study aims to provide a conceptual examination of the determinants that influence the intention to use Web 2.0 applications in workplaces in Korea. To achieve this objective, this study selected the theory of reasoned action (TRA) as a theoretical basis to explain variation in behavioral intentions. Structural equation modeling was employed to analyze data collected from 269 workers distributed in 5 companies in Korea. In addition, we classified respondents into extroverts and introverts and delineated the different factors for these two types of respondents that affect their intentions to use Web 2.0 tools in workplaces. The findings of this research could provide a theoretical foundation for academics on the validation of technology adoption. This research will also serve as a guideline for service providers in designing the Web 2.0 services.

Comparative Analysis of Optimization Algorithms and the Effects of Coupling Hedging Rules in Reservoir Operations

  • The necessity for appropriate management of water resources infrastructures such as reservoirs, levees, and dikes is increasing due to unexpected hydro-climate irregularities and rising water demands. To meet this need, past studies have focused on advancing theoretical optimization algorithms such as nonlinear programming, dynamic programming (DP), and genetic programming. Yet, the optimally derived theoretical solutions are limited to be directly implemented in making release decisions in the real-world systems for a variety of reasons. This study first aims to comparatively analyze the two prominent optimization methods, DP and evolutionary multi-objective direct policy search (EMODPS), under historical inflow series using K-fold cross validation. A total of six optimization models are formed each with a specific formulation. Then, one of the optimization models was coupled with the actual zone-based hedging rule that has been adopted in practice. The proposed methodology was applied to Boryeong Dam located in South Korea with conflicting objectives between supply and demand. As a result, the EMODPS models demonstrated a better performance than the DP models in terms of proximity to the ideal. Moreover, the incorporation of the real-world policy with the optimal solutions improved in all indices in terms of the supply side, while widening the range of the trade-off between frequency and magnitude measured in the sides of demand. The results from this study once again highlight the necessity of closing the gap between the theoretical solutions with the real-world implementable policies.

Development and Validation of Core Competency Scale For Graduate Students in the Field of Science and Engineering (이공계열 대학원생 핵심역량 진단도구 개발 및 타당화 연구: A연구중심대학 사례)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the core competencies of graduate students at A research university in the context of graduate education in science and engineering, and to develop and validate a diagnostic tool to measure them. To achieve the research objectives, first, 6 factors and 18 sub-competencies of core competencies were derived based on a review of domestic and foreign studies, cases of excellent research-centered overseas universities, and interviews with members of A University. Second, a theoretical model was constructed by deriving behavioral indicators based on the core competencies and sub-competencies, and a preliminary survey was conducted on 188 graduate students of University A to verify the statistical validity of the theoretical model. Results of exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, the core competencies of graduate students at A research university consisted of 6 factors, 16 sub-competencies, and 77 items. Specifically, it included "Independent research capability(13 items)", "Social Entrepreneurship(10 items)", "Academic agility(15 items)", "Ingenious Challenges(15 items)", "Collegial Collaboration(9 items)", and "Mueunjae leadership(15 items)". This study contributes to the development of theories related to core competencies of graduate students in science and engineering, and has practical significance as a basis for a data-driven competency-based graduate education system.

Experimental Validation of a Direct Methanol Fuel Cells(DMFCs) model with a Operating Temperatures and Methanol Feed Concentrations (직접메탄올 연료전지의 농도 및 온도변화에 따른 실험적 검증)

  • In this paper, both theoretical and experimental investigations have been performed to examine the effects of key operating parameters on the cell performance of a DMFCs (i.e., methanol feed concentration and operating temperature). For experiment, the membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) were prepared using a conventional MEA fabrication method based on a catalyst coated electrode (CCE) and tested under various cell temperatures and methanol feed concentrations. The polarization curve measurements were conducted using in-house-made $25cm^2$ MEAs. The voltage-current density data were collected under three different cell temperatures ($50^{\circ}C$, $60^{\circ}C$, and $70^{\circ}C$) and four different methanol feed concentrations (1 M, 2 M, 3 M, and 4 M). The experimental data indicate that the measured I-V curves are significantly altered, depending on these conditions. On the other hand, previously developed one-dimensional, two-phase DMFC model is simulated under the same operating conditions used in the experiments. The model predictions compare well with the experimental data over a wide range of these operating conditions, which demonstrates the validity and accuracy of the present DMFC model. Furthermore, both simulation and experimental results exhibit the strong influences of methanol and water crossover rates through the membrane on DMFC performance and I-V curve characteristics.

Damage Assessment of Free-fall Dropped Object on Sub-seabed in Offshore Operation

  • This paper presents the damage assessment of a free-fall dropped object on the seabed. The damage to a dropped object totally depends on the relationship between the impact energy and the soil strength at the mudline. In this study, unexpected dropping scenarios were first assumed by varying the relevant range of the impact velocity, structure geometry at the moment of impact, and soil strength profile along the penetration depth. Theoretical damage assessments were then undertaken for a free-fall dropping event with a fixed final embedment depth for the structure. This paper also describes the results of a three-dimensional large deformation finite element analysis undertaken for the purpose of validation. The analyses were carried out using the coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian approach, modifying the simple elastic-perfectly plastic Tresca soil model. The validation exercises for each dropping scenario showed good agreement, and the present numerical approach was capable of predicting the behavior of a free-fall dropped object.

A Study on Predicting Bankruptcy Discriminant Model for Small-Sized Venture Firms using Technology Evaluation Data (기술력평가 자료를 이용한 중소벤처기업 파산예측 판별모형에 관한 연구)

  • There were considerable researches by finance people trying to find out business ratios as predictors of corporate bankruptcy. However, such financial ratios usually lack theoretical justification to predict bankruptcy for technology-oriented small sized venture firms. This study proposes a bankruptcy predictive discriminant model using technology evaluation data instead of financial data, evaluates the model fit by the correct classification rate, cross-validation method and M-P-P method. The results indicate that linear discriminant model was found to be more appropriate model than the logistic discriminant model and 69% of original grouped data were correctly classified while 67% of future data were expected to be classified correctly.

Analysis on Wind Profile Characteristics in a Sublayer of Atmospheric Boundary Layer over a Semi-Complex Terrain - LIDAR Remote Sensing Campaign at Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (준복잡지형 대기경계층 저층 풍속분포 특성분석 - 포항가속기 라이다 원격탐사 캠페인을 중심으로)

  • The mean wind speed and turbulence intensity profiles in the atmospheric boundary layer were extracted from a LIDAR remote sensing campaign in order to apply for CFD validation. After considering the semi-steady state field data requirements to be used for CFD validation, a neutral atmosphere campaign period, in which the main wind direction and the power-law exponent of the wind profile were constantly maintained, was chosen. The campaign site at the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory, surrounded by 40~50m high hills, with an apartment district spread beyond the hills, is to be classified as a semi-complex terrain. Nevertheless, wind speed profiles measured up to 100m above the ground fitted well into a theoretical-experimental logarithmic-law equation. The LIDAR remote-sensing data of the sub-layer of the atmospheric boundary layer has been proven to be superior to the data obtained by conventional extrapolation of the wind profile with 2 or 3 anemometer measurements.

Development and Validation of Parent-child Lexical Interaction Scale for Preschoolers (PLIS-P) (부모-유아 어휘 상호작용 척도의 개발 및 타당화)

  • This study developed and validated a 'Parent-child Lexical Interaction Scale for Preschoolers (PLIS-P)'. First, we developed the preliminary scale with 7 factors after reviewing previous literature related to vocabulary and literacy instruction for young children and reflected on feedback from child studies experts and mothers with young children. Subsequently, to validate the scale, the online survey was conducted on mothers with 5-to 6-year-old children who live in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Incheon, Gyeongsang, Chungcheong, Jeolla, Gangwon, and Jeju. Responses from 309 mothers were used to conduct exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis and correlation analysis. The results were as follows. First, the result of exploratory analysis showed that the model with 7 factors was satisfactory: (1) vocabulary exposure, (2) word elaboration, (3) scaffolding, (4) play activity, (5) conventional instruction, (6) word type awareness instruction, (7) word morphology instruction. Second, confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the good fit of the model. Third, the concurrent validity was confirmed by correlation analysis using EC-HOME. Last, the internal consistency reliability of each factor of PLIS-P was also confirmed. This study developed both a theoretical framework of parent-child lexical interaction and a Parent-child Lexical Interaction Scale for Preschoolers. This scale can be used by parents, practitioners, and researchers to acquire knowledge about interaction related to words between Korean parents and young children.
