  • Compound nouns as a composition of multiple nouns exhibit diverse occurence patterns in the texts and have varying degree of meaning coherence. The problem of compound nouns in information retrieval is to find a method to represent and identify the compositive patterns of each words. This paper explains how the cooccurrence patterns are related with the meaning of each compound noun and the information of such relations that can be mechanically acquired from texts is used in ranking the candidated documents for a given query. The main theme of the paper is that compound nouns can be categorized according to their occurrence patterns of simple nouns and these occurrence patterns can be formalized by statistical analysis without large dictionary or complex compositive rules. Our suggested model achieved about 7.75% improvement over the best precision of the other methods at each recall measurements on Korean test collection.

  • A method to detect lots of porno documents on the internet is presented in this parer. The proposed method applies fuzzy inference mechanism to the conventional information retrieval techniques. First, several example sites on porno arc provided by users and then candidate words representing for porno documents are extracted from theme documents. In this process, lexical analysis and stemming are performed. Then, several values such as tole term frequency(TF), the document frequency(DF), and the Heuristic Information(HI) Is computed for each candidate word. Finally, fuzzy inference is performed with the above three values to weight candidate words. The weights of candidate words arc used to determine whether a liven site is sexual or not. From experiments on small test collection, the proposed method was shown useful to detect the sexual sites automatically.

  • Purpose: Increasing numbers of Koreans have immigrated to the United States since the late 1960s. The first generation of Korean immigrants or their parents become old and institutionalized in American nursing home setting. Although the Korean elders would experience many cultural differences in the nursing home, no study to date has investigated their everyday lives on how they live through their later lives within a different cultural environment from their own. Methods: Using ethnographic methodology, the purpose of this paper was to illustrate Korean residents' experiences and daily lives in a nursing home located in an east coastal city in the U.S. Participant observation, filed notes, semi-structured interviews were utilized by means of data collection. Eighteen Korean residents were observed, and five of them and two nurses participated in informal qualitative interviews. Results: The overriding theme from the findings is "thrown in a different world." Three sub-themes include "constant struggles in making themselves understood", "dealing with culturally inappropriate nursing care," and "maintaining their own ways of life". Conclusions: The discovered themes reflect culturally isolated lives of the participants and open a venue for designing a culturally congruent nursing care for Korean elders living in the U.S. nursing homes.

  • Appropriation is of considerable significance in a cultural trend of thought, as one of the means of realizing the post-modernism period. With the increasing use of appropriation techniques in modern fashion, it is necessary to study the external performance and internal aesthetic value of appropriation in fashion. In the book of cultural appropriation, American scholar James o young divides into three categories of appropriation in culture, namely: object appropriation, content appropriation, and subject appropriation. Based on James O Young's three types of appropriation techniques summarized in the theory of the cultural appropriation, the purpose of this study is through the appropriation of the poncho of traditional Mexican clothing in modern fashion as an example; analyzing the external appropriation characteristics and internal aesthetic significance of different appropriation type. The results are as follows. First, designers take the Originality in modern fashion by expressing Mexican Poncho's form, color, pattern, and material as it is through object appropriation technique. Second, through the Mexican folk poncho's style, designers used these to show the similarity produced by content appropriation in modern fashion. Third, designers used the poncho's design concept or poncho's culture, blending the theme of the collection, adding different color, pattern or materials such as fur, lace, and wool, and presenting a new image different from folk costumes through creative subject appropriation technique.

  • Covering an area of about 39 ha, Qingming Shanghe Park is located in the northwest of Kaifeng, formerly the capital of seven dynasties in China. It is intended to serve as a tourist attraction based on a painting 〃Qingming Festival at Riverside〃 by Zhang Zeduan of the Northern song Dynasty, which vividly illustrates a real life on the both sides of the Bian River as well as in the urban area, Kaifeng, in early Spring. The park is a collection of varied buildings such as shops, restaurants, tea-houses, theaters, and hotels in the North song style, with an introduction of the history of Kaifeng, this paper examines design philosophy and methodology of the park, and discusses the creative design of the first stage development known as known as The South Area of the park. Marked by the Rainbow Bridge and the City Gate, the South Area is divided into three parts, the rural, suburban, and urban parts which are organized according to the spatial order showed in the painting. The South Area proves to be very successful because of its amazing sense of history and interesting folk performance. Furthermore, the preliminary 9planning of the second stage development known as The North Area is presented with references to culture, history and customs. The North Area is proposed to include the Old Sports & Games Garden, the Exhibition Garden, and the Hot Spring Garden with an appearance of the imperial gardens in the Northern Song, integrated with participation of old sports and games, display of old science & technology achievements, and enjoyment of hot spring bath.

  • $Premi\grave{e}re$ Vision is a leading textile collection held since 1973. In this study, textiles for 2004/05 F/W season in $Premi\grave{e}re$ Vision were analyzed at the various point of view, such as general trend, sub-theme, fiber content, color trend, structure, yarn trend, pattern, texture, decoration, finishing and other technical treatment, and functionality. There were three general trends; natural/ecology, geometry, and combination. Natural color and texture were widely used over the fabric exhibited, and irregularities expressed the natural trend of textiles. Geometric patterns were used for knit as well as for woven. Geometry expressed by various methods such as weaving, knitting, printing, shearing, embossing, and etc. However, geometry shown in this season was not a clear form expressed by weaving, but a blurry, irregular form expressed by various other methods such as knitting. The combination among heterogeneous fibers, yarns, colors, images, and textures was usual, however, the harmony among them was accomplished.

  • Soluble silica profiles of the East Sea were described by comparing the 1970 Japanese data with the 1999-2000 ONR-JES data set, which is the most extensive collection of data currently available. Considering the ventilation mode change happened/ongoing and the features of the soluble silica to phosphate ratio we suggest a hypothesis that a utilization of soluble silica by the primary production might be exacerbated in the future. According to the silica limitation hypothesis composition of primary producers will be altered and followed by a weaker contribution of ballast against aggregates in the export production. Since the silicate cycle is deeply intertwined with the carbon cycle whether the warmed future ocean would behave like the East Sea appears to a potentially promising study theme.
