  • This study was to explore the meaning and implications of nurses' representations in newspapers from the perspective of convergence. Four different Korean newspaper articles from Aug. 2003 to Sep. 2013 were analyzed by using a descriptive exploratory qualitative study, thematic analysis. Five themes were derived from the data analysis. In the newspaper, in general, professional nurses were described as patient-centered nursing provider with sense of calling for nursing. Also their positive portrayals as health professionals have noticeably emerged. Yet in contrast, nurses' negative portrayals as neglectful, lazy, and discriminating against the poor have been reported. The study findings indicate significantly enhanced nursing professionalism and nursing as a future-promising occupation. The results can be used to develop strategies to improve nursing public image in the media. For further exploratory study on the subscriber's image of nurses after reading the articles is needed.

  • This paper deals with risk assessment of life in a landslide-prone area by a GIS-based modeling method. Landslide susceptibility maps can provide a probability of landslide prone areas to mitigate or proper control this problems and to take any development plan and disaster management. A landslide inventory map of the study area was prepared based on past historical information and aerial photography analysis. A total of 550 landslides have been counted at the whole study area. The extracted landslides were randomly selected and divided into two different groups, 50% of the landslides were used for model calibration and the other were used for validation purpose. Eleven causative factors (continuous and thematic) such as slope, aspect, curvature, topographic wetness index, elevation, forest type, forest crown density, geology, land-use, soil drainage, and soil texture were used in hazard analysis. The correlation between landslides and these factors, pixels were divided into several classes and frequency ratio was also extracted. Eventually, a landslide susceptibility map was constructed using a logistic regression model based on entire events. Moreover, the landslide susceptibility map was plotted with a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and calculated the area under the curve (AUC) and tried to extract a success rate curve. Based on the results, logistic regression produced an 85.18% accuracy, so we believed that the model was reliable and acceptable for the landslide susceptibility analysis on the study area. In addition, for risk assessment, vulnerability scale were added for social thematic data layer. The study area predictive landslide affected pixels 2,000 and 5,000 were also calculated for making a probability table. In final calculation, the 2,000 predictive landslide affected pixels were assumed to run. The total population causalities were estimated as 7.75 person that was relatively close to the actual number published in Korean Annual Disaster Report, 2006.

  • Studies that can find resolutions to problems of subjective psychiatric analysis must be performed and indeed they are in the process. However there still lies many problems in researches of mentality examination, which should be the foundation of finding potential resolutions. One of the biggest problems in the conventional system is that there are many different opinions by psychiatrists depending on their educations and experiences. There is no objective standard on the subjects and there is no effective psychiatric analysis method. Also, the characteristic of such examinations is that it cannot be applied to disabilities, foreigners and infants alyce the examination is ch examinconversation. The objective of this atudy is to standardize TAT(Thematic Apperception Test)analysiBallken index method so that subjective data from the examination can be excluded and the examination thus maklysithe examination objectified. Furthermore, objective result and patients' brain wave pattern is read with BCI(Brain Computer Interface) ch exaTherenvironment to Alsare it to brain wave characteristics vectors to reate brain-wave characteristics vector DB. Therefore, such DB can be utilize durlysithe examination and diagnosis to reate objective examination method and standardized diagnosis system. Thus, mentality examination can be performed only with brain-wave scans with BCI based TAT system.

  • The purpose of this research was to understand how individuals reflect on the frequency and quantity of foods that they consume. Participants selected 5 males and 15 females aged 30 years or older were first interviewed on the frequency of their food consumption. Then based on this data, they were given a cognitive interview using the method of verbal proving. The individual cognitive interviews were recorded with consent while being conducted after complete approval by the Seoul National University Institution Review Board. The recorded material was evaluated using a thematic analysis after transcribing them into text. By analyzing stages of reflection, the major barriers to make the device difficult are revealed: 1) More difficulty in remembering events over the course of a full year due to diversification in the types of food that people consume 2) difficulty calculating the average for seasonal foods 3) difficulty estimating the amount of consumption from the photos presented 4) difficulty estimating amount of consumption from the quantity presented 5) difficulty processing foods that people think are healthy and foods are unhealthy simultaneously 6) difficulty having to consider foods where target food goes in as an ingredient; 7) difficulties arising from having to increase frequency when the amount consumed is higher than the quantity that is presented 8) difficulty having to combine the frequency and quantity of each food item when numerous foods are clustered into one category. These findings show that the less participants were involved in cooking, the more diverse their eating habits were, and the more they tried to adhere to rules of filling out the questionnaire, the more it was difficult for them to come up with an answer to the question being asked. It therefore seems necessary to construct a Food Frequency questionnaire that is attentive to these problems that arise from the recall stages.

  • In recent years, utilizations of satellite imagery have been extensively conducted in order to obtain accurate information on drought detection in spring season. This research also carried out utilization of satellite imagery through the various vegetation indices such as NDVI(Normalized Difference Vegeation Index), MSI(Moisture Stress Index), MidIR Index, II(Infrared Index) to find better methodology to detect drought phenomena, especially occurring in spring season. For this purpose, Landsat TM(Thematic Mapper) images were used and applied on the Yeong-cheon city. In this study, the characteristics of DN(Digital Number) for each vegetation index is analyzed, and the correlation analysis between indices and DN according to the number of days with no rain is performed. The results shows high correlation between NDVI and MSI and II with positive correlation on MSI, and negative correlation on II. This indicates the possibility for practical use of MSI, II indices with NDVI to obtain better credibility for detecting spring droughts.

  • This study examined the knowledge and understanding of integrative medicine in Korea, specifically conflicts between western and oriental medicine within Parallel (Dual) health care systems. Qualitative methodology using grounded theory guided semi-structured, in-depth interviews with Western Medical Doctors (W.M.D., n = 6), Oriental Medical Doctors (O.M.D., n = 5) and Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners (T.C.M.P., n = 4). Thematic analysis was used to determine broad themes from the interviews. 15 professionals (W.M.D. (40%), O.M.D. (33%), T.C.M.P. (27%), 10 males (67%) and 5 females (33%), mean age 45) were interviewed, recorded, and transcribed. Thematic analysis revealed three key themes: systematic conflicts, integration and future directions. Subthemes of systematic conflicts included: credibility of Oriental Medicine, commercial imperatives, maintaining social standing of O.M.D., professional qualifications and lack structures supporting collaborative practice. Integration subthemes included lack of academic linkage and clarity for appropriate triage, opposing medical paradigms and limited social imperative. Future directions should include: social justification, guarantee of oriental medicine legitimacy, role of government and understanding of scientific evidence. To successfully integrate dual medical systems there is a need to address differences in social-environmental factors and perceptions of scientific understanding, as well as developing strong academic links in clinical practice.

  • Inter vivos in the context of wealth and estate planning can be generally defined as a transfer that takes place between the livings. Parents are motivated to transfer for altruisme and exchange. In this context, this study aims to explore another potential motives of inter vivos, which is 'affection'. Data is collected through semi-structured interviews with inter vivos experts who have published articles in this area. The interview is encoded and thematic analysis is carried out to classify themes and subthemes that exist in the inter vivos transfers. This study discovers four main themes, which indicate that inter vivos transfers based on affection can be enlightened by the relationship between parents and children, responsibility for children, types of inter vivos, and effects to other heirs. Relationship between parents and children can be explained as parents transfer their wealth to the closest children, children who care for them and to family members only. Parents also are responsible to protect their children after they die and assist them who are in need. Types of inter vivos are considered as boundless inter vivos and without any material return. Inter vivos based on affection also aims not to abuse other heirs.

  • Objectives: Cancer diagnoses have a tremendous impact on individuals and communities, drawing intense public concern. The objective of the current research was to examine news coverage and content related to cancer-related issues in Korean newspapers. Methods: Primarily using the database system of the Korea Press Foundation, we conducted a content analysis of 2806 articles from 9 Korean daily newspapers during a recent 3-year period from 2015 to 2017. Thematic categories, the types of articles, attitudes and tone, and the number of sources in each article were coded and classified. Results: Many news articles dealt with a diverse range of themes related to cancer, including general healthcare information, the latest research and development, specific medical institutions and personnel, and technology and products, which jointly accounted for 74.8% of all articles. Those thematic categories differed markedly in terms of article type, tone, and the number of cited sources. News articles provided extensive information about healthcare resources, and many articles seemed to contain advertising content. However, the content related to complex social issues such as National Health Insurance did not include enough information for the reader to contextualize the issues properly or present the issues systematically. Conclusions: It can be assumed that the media exert differential influence on individuals through news coverage. Within the present reporting framework, the availability and usefulness of information are likely to depend solely on individuals' capabilities, such as financial and health literacy; this dependency has a negative impact on knowledge gaps and health inequities.
