Second throat supersonic exhaust diffusers (STEDs) were designed to simulate high-altitude conditions according to the normal-shock model. Experimental studies were performed on the STEDs to investigate how performance characteristics varied with the length and diameter of the STED using high-pressure nitrogen gas. The variation in performance due to length indicated that the performance of the STED could be very slightly improved by adjusting the diffuser inlet length ($L_d$), and it could be significantly improved by optimizing the second throat length ratio ($L_{st}/D_{st}$) and the divergence length ($L_s$). The starting and vacuum chamber pressures exhibited the highest level of performance near ($A_d/A_{st}$) of the design point.

In this study, the model tests were conducted on the short piles installed in sands under a horizontal pullout load to investigate their behavior characteristics. From the horizontal loading tests where dimensions of the pile diameter and length, and loading point were varied, the horizontal pullout resistance and the rotational and translational movement pattern of the pile were investigated. As a result, the horizontal pullout resistance of the pile embedded in sands was dependent on the pile length, diameter, loading point, etc. The ultimate horizontal pullout load tended to increase as the loading point (h/L) moved to the bottom from the top of the pile, regardless of the ratio between the pile length and diameter (L/D), reached the maximum value at the point of h/L = 0.75, and decreased afterwards. When the horizontal pullout load acted on the upper part above the middle of the pile, the pile rotated clockwise and moved to the pullout direction, and the pivot point of the pile was located at 150-360mm depth below the ground surface. On the other hand, when the horizontal pullout load acted on the lower part of the pile, the pile rotated counterclockwise and travelled horizontally, and the rotational angle was very small.
The lateral behavior characteristics of concrete group pile under the lateral load were examined by the laboratory model tests in this study. Piles were socketed 1D(D : pile diameter) in the concrete block, and model tests were executed on $2{\times}3$ group piles, of which the length were 11D, 15D and 20D. All results of loading tests under each condition was presented by the lateral load-displacement curves, and the displacements in the ground under the lateral loads were measured. As a results of model tests, as the ratio of pile length/diameter(L/D) was decreased, the yielding load and the lateral displacement at that load were increased. The yielding load was evaluated as the load at lateral displacement of 15 mm. The yielding loads at the pile length of 11D, 15D and 20D were 11.7, 6.2kN and 3.4kN. The lateral displacements of pile in the ground under each condition were measured linearly and the failure occurred at the location where the piles were socketed in concrete block.
An experimental and numerical investigation of the ejector-jets focusing on its geometric parameters that effect on thrust performance was carried out. The area ratio of the primary nozzle that was tested in the present study was 2.17 and 3.18, while the ratio of the length to the diameter of the duct downstream the primary nozzle inlet had values of 3.41, 6.82, and 10.23. Internal flow properties of ejector-jet were estimated by comparison experiment data and CFD analysis for basic study of ejector-jet thrust performance. For examination of thrust performance, the thrust ratios increased with increase in L/D. Especially at AR=2.17, the maximum thrust augmentation was 33 percent for the shortest L/D. It is expected that the increase of mixing duct length of ejector-jet will be helpful in a thrust performance by improving mixing efficiency.

Experimental investigations were performed to examine the characteristics of propagating flame fronts around multiple bars within a rectangular chamber. The explosion chamber is 400 mm in height, $700{\times}700mm^2$ in cross-section and has a large top-venting area, $A_v$, of $700{\times}210mm^2$. This results in a value of 0.44 for $A_v/V^{2/3}$ and a L/D value of 0.57. The multiple obstacles of length 700 mm with a blockage ratio of 30 % were placed within the chamber. Temporally resolved flame front images were recorded by a high speed video camera to investigate the interaction between the propagating flame and the obstacles. Results showed that the flame propagation speeds before the flame impinges onto the obstacle almost equal to the laminar burning velocity. As the propagating flame impinged on the obstacle, the central region of flame began to become concave, this resulted in the flame deceleration in the region. As the flame interacted with the modified flow filed generated behind the central obstacle, the probability density functions(PDFs) of the local flame displacement speed were extensively distributed toward higher speeds.

Heat transfer distributions and friction factors in square channels (3.0 ${\times}$ 3.0 cm) with twisted tape inserts and with twisted tape inserts plus interrupted ribs are respectively investigated. The rib height-to-channel hydraulic diameter ratio, $e/D_h$, is kept at 0.067 and test section length-to-hydraulic diameter ratio, $L/D_h$ is 30. The square ribs are arranged to follow the trace of the twisted tape and along the flow direction defined as axial interrupted ribs. The twisted tape is 0.1 mm thick carbon steel sheet with diameter of 2.8 cm, length of 90 cm, and 2.5 turns. Two heating conditions are investigated for test channels with twisted tape inserts and rib turbulators: (1) electric heat uniformly applied to four side walls of the square duct, and (2) electric heat uniformly applied to two opposite ribbed walls of the square channel. Results show that the twisted tape with interrupted ribs provides a higher overall heat transfer performance over the twisted tape with no ribs.
The critical flow phenomenon has been studied because of its significant effect for design basis accidents in nuclear power plants. Transition points from thermal non-equilibrium to equilibrium are different according to the geometric effect on the critical flow. This study evaluates the uncertainty parameters of the critical flow model for analysis of DBA (Design Basis Accident) with the MARS-KS (Multi-dimensional Analysis for Reactor Safety-KINS Standard) code used as an independent regulatory assessment. The uncertainty of the critical flow model is represented by three parameters including the thermal non-equilibrium factor, discharge coefficient, and length to diameter (L/D) ratio, and their ranges are determined using large-scale Marviken test data. The uncertainty range of the thermal non-equilibrium factor is updated by the MCDA (Model Calibration through Data Assimilation) method. The updated uncertainty range is confirmed using an LBLOCA (Large Break Loss of Coolant Accident) experiment in the LOFT (Loss of Fluid Test) facility. The uncertainty ranges are also used to calculate an LBLOCA of the APR (Advanced Power Reactor) 1400 NPP (Nuclear Power Plants), focusing on the effect of the PCT (Peak Cladding Temperature). The results reveal that break flow is strongly dependent on the degree of the thermal non-equilibrium state in a ruptured pipe with a small L/D ratio. Moreover, this study provides the method to handle the thermal non-equilibrium factor, discharge coefficient, and length to diameter (L/D) ratio in the system code.

Effects of the orifice internal flow such as cavitation and hydraulic flip on transverse injection into subsonic crossflows have been studied. The liquid column breakup length and the liquid column trajectory were measured by changing the orifice diameter (d), the orifice length/orifice diameter (L/d), the injection pressure and the shapes (sharp and round) of orifice entrance, and were compared with previous results. It is found that cavitation bubbles, which occur inside the sharp-edged orifice, make the liquid jet very turbulent and especially in the orifices with L/d = 5 hydraulic flip appear as cavitation bubbles are emitted from the orifice. The breakup length is shorter as cavitation bubbles grows and hydraulic flip appears. However, the liquid column trajectories normalized by the effective diameter and the effective momentum ratio have a similar tendency irrespective of cavitation and hydraulic flip.

This study aimed to investigate the penetration characteristics of a segmented penetrator with normal and inclined angles. The length to diameter ratio (L/D) of the segmented penetrator was varied as 1.0, 0.5, and 0.25. Moreover, impact velocities of 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 km/s and inclination angles of $15^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, and $45^{\circ}$ were successively applied. The AUTODYN-3D code was used to simulate the penetration performance of the segmented penetrator. The results show that the penetration performance of the segmented penetrator with steel plates was obviously higher than that of the corresponding continuous penetrator with steel plates. The outstanding penetration performance of the segmented penetrator can be observed when the impact velocity was 2.0 km/s and L/D = 1. In this case, the penetration performance of the segmented penetrator was 7% higher than that of the corresponding continuous penetrator. This trend was attributable to the interaction between the reactive plate and the projectile. The extent of the interaction relies on the relative velocities of the plate and projectiles, inclination angle, and number of segmented penetrators. It was proven that the penetration performance of the segmented penetrator can be improved by increasing the impact velocity, number of segmented penetrators between segments, and penetrator length.
