Sea level observations in the Korean seas by remote sensing

  • Sea level variations and sea surface circulations in the Korean seas were observed by Topex/Poseidon altimeter data from 1993 through 1997. In sea level variations, the West and South Sea showed relatively high variations with comparison to the East Sea. Then, the northern and southern area in the West Sea showed the range of 20${\sim}$30cm and 18${\sim}$24cm, and the northern west of Jeju island and the southern west of Tsushima island in the South Sea showed the range of 15${\sim}$20cm and 10${\sim}$15cm, respectively. High variations in the West Sea was results to the inflow in sea surface of Yellow Sea Warm Current (YSWC) and bottom topography. Sea level variations in the South Sea was due to two branch currents(Jeju Warm Current and East Korea Warm Current) originated from Kuroshio Current (KC). In sea surface circulations, there existed remarkably three eddies circulations in the East Sea that are mainly connected with North Korea Cold Current (NKCC), East Korea Warm Current (EKWC) and Tushima Warm Current(TWC). Their eddies are caused basically to the influence of currents in sea surface circulations; Cyclone (0.03 cm/sec) in the Wonsan bay off shore with NKCC, and anticyclone (0.06 cm/sec) in the southwestern area of Ulleung island with EKWC, and cyclone (0.01 cm/sec) in the northeastern area of Tushima island with TWC, respectively.

Seasonal Variation of Global Volume Transport Calculated from an Ocean General Circulation Model

  • Seasonal variation in global transport calculated from an ocean general circulation model (OGCM) has been assessed through the comparison with observational estimates. The OGCM based on the GFDL MOM1.1 has honzontal grid interval of 10 and 21 verticle levels, and was integrated for 31 years forced by climatological wind stress, freshwater flux, and heat flux with restoring. General features of the world ocean circulation are well reproduced, which include the western boundary currents such as the Kuroshio and the Agulhas Current, the Equatorial Current system, the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, and the Weddell Sea gyres. Also well resolved is the remarkable seasonal variation in the depth-integrated flows in the northern Indian Ocean due to the monsoonal wind. Monthly variation is found to be dominant in the transport of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current through the Drake Passage in accordance with observational estimates. It has been shown that the mid-latitude depth-integrated flows obey the Sverdrup relation, except for some regions such as continental shelf regions where the interaction between stratification and bottom topography is critical.

북부 동중국해 수괴 변화 감시를 위한 유종섬모류 분포 적용 (Using Tintinnid Distribution for Monitoring Water Mass Changes in the Northern East China Sea)

  • Tintinnid species distribution has been monitored in the northern East China Sea (ECS) in the summer of 2006 through 2011. This is used to understand the water mass movements in the northern ECS. The warm oceanic tintinnid species had largely spread in 2007 in the area, indicating that there was greater warm water extension into the northern ECS. However the extension of neritic water within the Changjiang diluted water mass has strengthened in 2008 and 2010 because the neritic species distribution had relatively grown in both years. These annual results based on the biological indicators of tintinnid species are well matched with the salinity change in the area. The warm oceanic species, Dadayiella ganymedes had frequently occurred over the study years and had shown a significant relationship with the salinity change. This is valuable as a key stone species for monitoring the intrusion of the Kuroshio within the northern ECS. Information from tintinnid biological indicators can support physical oceanography data to confirm ambiguous water mass properties.

Seasonal variation in depth-stratified macroalgal assemblage patterns on Marado, Jeju Island, Korea

  • Marado is a small rocky island located off the south coast of Jeju Island and acts as the first gateway of the Kuroshio Current to Korean coastal ecosystems. This island is one of the most unpolluted and well preserved sea areas around the Jeju coast. We extensively observed macroalgal assemblages of species and functional forms in the intertidal and subtidal zones through four seasons on Marado, Jeju Island, Korea to demonstrate the seasonality of vertical distribution patterns and biomass. A total of 144 species (14 Chlorophyta, 40 Phaeophyta, and 90 Rhodophyta) were identified in quadrats and were analyzed seasonally and vertically to define the variation patterns. The annual mean biomass of macroalgae was $2,932.3g\;wet\;wt\;m^{-2}$ and the highest value was recorded in spring and the lowest was in winter. The annual dominant species by biomass was Ecklonia cava followed by Sargassum fusiforme, S. macrocarpum, Amphiroa galapagensis, Chondria crassicaulis, and S. thunbergii. Obvious biomass zonation patterns of macroalgal species were detected in relation to tidal height and depth. Macroalgal biomass, diversity index (H'), and community dynamics were the highest in the shallow subtidal zone. Species number was higher in the subtidal than in the intertidal zone and similar throughout the entire subtidal zone. Our results provide revealing insights into the distribution patterns of macroalgal assemblages in an unpolluted sea area around Jeju Island.

Gymnodinioid Dinoflagellates (Gymnodiniales, Dinophyceae) in the Open Pacific Ocean

  • Records of selected gymnodinioid dinoflagellates from the open waters in the vicinity of the Kuroshio and Oyashio Currents, the Philippine, Celebes, Sulu and South China Seas, western and central equatorial and southeast Pacific Ocean are described and illustrated. The species Gymnodinium fusus Schütt, Gyrodinium falcatum Kofoid et Swezy, G. caudatum Kofoid et Swezy, G. sugashimanii J. Cachon et al. and Pseliodinium vaubanii Sournia are considered to be morphotypes of a single species, that until further studies can establish the correct genus, are named G. falcatum. This study is the first to record individuals of G. falcatum with very long curly extensions. Other gymnodinioid dinoflagellates that showed bifurcated hyposomes may be related to Gyrodinium bifurcatum Kofoid et Swezy or cells of thecate dinoflagellates exuviated from their thecae. Some specimens showed a rigid cover, although no discernible thecal plates. In this group, the most common species was Ptychodiscus noctiluca Stein and, for the first time, a micrograph of a tentative specimen of the genus Berghiella Kofoid et Michener is reported. The validity of the genera Berghiella and Balechina Loeblich Jr. et Loeblich III with thick cell covers is discussed. Several species with apical extensions, other unknown taxa with distinctive shapes, and colonial forms are illustrated. The diversity of gymnodinioid dinoflagellates is underinvestigated in the open ocean.

부유성 해양 폐기물에 의한 동지나해의 해양오염(I) - 해역별 수량 분포를 중심으로 - (Marine Pollution of the East China Sea by Floating Marine Debris(I) - Temporal quantity distribution of each zone -)

  • In order to analyze the influence of floating marine debris (FMD) in the East China Sea (ECS), a sighting survey was conducted from July 1st to July 14th, 2009 navigating about 966 km using a training vessel "Kaya (1,737 ton)" of Pukyong National University. The sampled zones are divided into 5 transect by observation day during the survey days and again specified with 45 segments per unit hour on the survey routes. The results of distribution of FMD are as follows: 1. The quantities of FMD at the central China Sea(CE) and northern part of Taiwan(NT) were found as total mean of 90.8 ea/hr, 56.7 ea/hr, respectively, and also 36.8 ea/hr, western part of Kyushu district(WJ), 10.7 ea/hr, 8.0 ea/hr, western(OK1) and northern part(OK2) of Okinawa, respectively. 2. Temporal variation of FMD is represented by depicting the sinusoidal curve as shape as tide in CE and OK1. 3. The higher sea surface temperature (SST) is as likely as if Kuroshio current exists strongly, the less quantities are decreased. On the other hand, the coastal zone of ECS and near of Yellow Sea are increased by lower SST.

A Model-generated Circulation in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea: I. Depth-mean Flow Fields

  • This paper presents the depth-mean monthly variation in the circulation of the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea computed using a robust diagnostic model. The mixed three-dimensional finite-difference Galerkin function model developed by Lee et at. (2000, 2001) has been extended to take into account baroclinic effects and then used to calculate the depth-mean flow fields as part of the results. In addition to M2 tide and oceanic flows previously considered, the model has been driven by the monthly mean wind stresses from Na and Seo (1998), the density gradient calculated based on by GDEM data set released by US Navy. Model results are very encouraging in that many of observed features including Jeju Cyclonic Gyre and frontal eddies along the shelfside of the Kuroshio main stream and west of Kyushu, are satisfactorily reproduced and are expected to be of value in interpreting observations in various oceanograhic disciplines.

진도산 해초류의(Ascidians)의 분류 (The Ascidians (Tunicata) from Chindo Islands, Korea)

  • 진도산 해초류의 분류학적 연구를 위하여 1994년 7월과 11월에 진도의 5개 지역(접도, 보전, 군포, 해동, 금갑)에서 채집된 재료들을 정리한 결과 13종과 1974년 8월에 진도의 4개지역(가학, 녹진, 접도, 가사도)에서 채집하여 이미 보고된 7종을 합하면 모두 7과 11속 16종이다. 이들 모두는 한국산 해초류에 보고된 종들이나 이 중 7과 9종은 진도산 해초류로서 처음 밝혀지는 종들이다. 이들 16종에 대한 수성별 구성은 온수역종이 8종(50%), 그 다음이 온-열대수역종으로서 7종(44%), 열대수역종은 1종(6%)이었다. 그러나 한수역 및 한-온수역종은 전연 나타나지 않았다. 이러한 사실은 진도가 우리나라 황해 남단에 위치하고 있어 남쪽에서 올라오는 쿠로시오난류의 지류에 영향을 받는다는 사실과 부합한다.

한국산 놀래기아목(농어목) 어류의 분류와 분포 (A Revision of the Suborder Labroidei(Pisces: Perciformes) from Korea)

  • 1988년 9월부터 1996년 3월까지 우리 나라의 전 연안에서 채집된 놀래기아목(亞目)(Labroidei) 어류에 대하여 분류학적으로 재검토하고, 미세 분포를 조사하였다. 한국산 놀래기아목 어류는 자리돔과(Pomacentridae), 키크리과(Cichlidae), 망상어과(Embiotocidae), 놀래기과(Labridae)와 파랑비늘돔과(Scaridae)의 5과에 22속(屬)32종(種)으로 정리되어, 이들의 과, 속 및 종 검색표를 제시하였다. 본 조사에서 직접 표본을 입수한 15속 21종은 표본을 중심으로 계수 계측형질을 재 기재하였다. 이중에 1996년 3월 전남 완도에서 채집된 망상어과 어류 Ditrema viridis Oshima는 국내에서는 처음으로 보고되는 종이다. 외래도입종인 키크리과 어류를 제외한 대부분의 놀래기아목 어류는 쿠루시오 난류의 영향을 받는 제주도 연안과 남해안, 그리고 동해 남부와 울릉도 근해에까지 분포하였다.
