  • This study reports numerically the characteristics of dust scattering around the coal storage pile yards, substantially affected by the windbreak wall height. The dust scattering is closely associated with the frictional effect of wind flows as well as the pressure variation that consequently affect the dust particle behavior. In the present study, with the use of the commercial code of FLUENT, the distribution of wind velocity and pressure are predicted around coal storage pile yard for four different heights of the wind break wall. From the results, it was found that for the case 1 with the outer windbreak wall height of 3 m and inner windbreak wall height of 6 m, the amount of scattering dust for a year was estimated to be 1451 kg, whereas for the case 4 where a height of outer windbreak wall is 10 m and a height of inner windbreak wall is 16 m, the amount of scattering dust for a year was 358 kg. It shows that the dust scattering can be reduced by 75%, indicating important role of windbreak wall height on particle scattering. The numerical results would be useful in decision of the appropriate height of windbreak wall for decreasing the amount of scattering dust under various environmental conditions.

  • In a numerical simulation of open channel turbulent flows, the determination of wall roughness height for wall function was studied. The roughness constant, based on the law-of-the -wall for flow on rough walls, obtained by experimental works for pipe flows is employed in general wall functions. However, this constant of wall function is the function of Froude number in open channel flows. Thus, the wall roughness should be determined by taking into account the effect of Froude number. In addition, the wall roughness should be corresponding to Manning's roughness coefficient widely used for open channels. In this study, the relation between wall roughness height as an input condition and Manning's roughness coefficient was investigated, and an equation for effective wall roughness height considering the characteristics of numerical models was proposed as a function of Manning's roughness coefficient.

  • Currently, many studies are underway at home and abroad on the seismic performance evaluation and dry construction method of the masonry structure. In this study, a dry stack masonry wall system without mortar using concrete blocks is proposed, and investigate the seismic performance of dry filling wall frames through experimental studies. First, two types of standard blocks and key blocks were designed to assemble dry walls of concrete blocks. And then, three types of experiments were manufactured, including pure frame, 1/2 height filling wall frame, and full height filling wall frame, and cyclic load experiments in horizontal direction were performed to analyze crack patterns, load displacement history, rebar deformation yield, effective stiffness change, displacement ductility, and energy dissipation capacity. According to the experimental results, the full height filling wall frame had the largest horizontal resistance against the earthquake load and showed a high energy dissipation capacity. However, the 1/2 height filling wall frame requires attention because the filling wall constrains the effective span of the column, limiting the horizontal displacement of the frame. In addition, the concrete block was firmly assembled in the vertical direction of the wall as the horizontal movement between the concrete blocks was allowed within installation margin, and there was no dropping of the assembled concrete block.

  • Once a structure fabricated with mass concrete is in a form of wall such as retaining wall, side walls of a concrete caisson and so on, cracks induced by hydration heat have been known to be governed by exterior restraints which are mainly related to the boundary conditions of the structure. However, it is thought that the degree of restraints can be alleviated considerably only if a lift height of concrete placement or a panel size of the wall is selected properly before construction. As a way of minimizing thermal cracking commonly observed in massive wall-typed structure, this study aimed at evaluating effects of geometrical configuration on the temperature rise and thermal stress through parametric study. Evaluation of the effect was also performed for cement types using anti-sulphate cement, blast furnace slag cement and cement blended with two mineral admixture and one ordinary Portland Cement. so called ternary blended cement. As a result of analytical study, it was found that a lift height of concrete placement is the most important factor in controlling thermal cracking in massive wall, and the increase of a lift height is not always positive to the crack occurrence as not expected.

  • The purpose of this study is to experimentally evaluate the variation characteristics of stiffness and impact resistance under the construction height of gypsum board wall at the actual construction site. The method suggested in previous study was applied on the test method of horizontal load resistance and impact resistance. As a result of horizontal load resistance test, when the wall height is 2,400 mm, the maximum displacement is 13.6 mm and residual deformation is 0.5 mm, and when the wall height is 3,000 mm, the maximum displacement is 31.3 mm and the residual displacement is 6.8 mm. As a result of impact resistance test, the residual deformation of each specimen at 20 cm of fall height were 1.02 mm and 0.08 mm, respectively, the residual deformation at 40 cm of fall height were 1.58 mm and 0.35 mm, respectively, and the residual deformation at 60 cm of fall height were 2.23 mm and 2.48 mm, respectively.

  • This study investigates the shear lag phenomenon existing in the shear wall of the wall-frame structure. Elastic analysis of such structures is carried out using a 3-D frame analysis program. The structural parameters governing the shear lag phenomenon are wall height and thickness. The analysis shows that the overturning moment due to external lateral load is resisted by both of the shear/core wall and the external frame. Severe unstable stresses are identified in height ratio of about 0.7 The taller or thinner wall shows the smaller shear lag phenomenon.

  • Effects of ambient geometry on the liftoff characteristics are experimentally studied for nonpremixed turbulent jet flames. To clarify the inconsistency of the nozzle diameter effect on the liftoff height, the ambiences of finite and infinite domains are studied. For nonpremixed turbulent jet issuing from a straight nozzle to infinite domain, flame liftoff height increases linearly with nozzle exit mean velocity and is independent of nozzle diameter. With the circular plate installed on the upstream of nozzle exit, flame liftoff height is lower with plate at jet exit than without, but flame liftoff characteristics are similar to the case of infinite domain. For the confined jet having axisymmetric wall boundary, the ratio of the liftoff height and nozzle diameter is proportional to the nozzle exit mean velocity demonstrating the effect of the nozzle diameter on the liftoff height. The liftoff height increases with decreasing outer axisymmetric wall diameter. At blowout conditions, the blowout velocity decreases with decreasing outer axisymmetric wall diameter and liftoff heights at blowout are approximately 50 times of nozzle diameter.

  • Wall jet flow exists widely in engineering applications, including the simulation of thunderstorm downburst outflows, and has been investigated extensively by both experimental and numerical methods. Most previous studies focused on the scaling laws and self-similarity, while the effect of lip thickness and external stream height on mean velocity has not been examined in detail. The present work is a numerical study, using steady Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) simulations at a Reynolds number of $3.5{\times}10^4$, of a turbulent plane wall jet with an external stream to investigate the influence of the wall jet domain on downstream development of the flow. The comparisons of flow characteristics simulated by the Reynolds stress turbulence model closure (Stress-omega, SWRSM) and experimental results indicate that this model may be considered reasonable for simulating the wall jet. The confined wall jet is further analyzed in a parametric study, with the results compared to the experimental data. The results indicate that the height and the width of the wind tunnel and the lip thickness of the jet nozzle have a great effect on the wall jet development. The top plate of the tunnel does not confine the development of the wall jet within 200b of the nozzle when the height of the tunnel is more than 40b (b is the height of jet nozzle). The features of the centerline flow in the mid plane of the 3D numerical model are close to those of the 2D simulated plane wall jet when the width of the tunnel is more than 20b.

  • The main aim of this paper is to investigate the relationship between thickness and height of the axially symmetric cylindrical reinforced concrete (RC) walls by the help of a meta-heuristic optimization procedure. The material cost of the wall which includes concrete, reinforcement and formwork, was chosen as objective function of the optimization problem. The wall thickness, compressive strength of concrete and diameter of reinforcement bars were defined as design variables and tank volume, radius and height of the wall, loading condition and unit cost of material were defined as design constants. Numerical analyses of the wall were conducted by using superposition method (SPM) considering ACI 318-Building code requirements for structural concrete. The optimum wall thickness-height relationship was investigated under three main cases related with compressive strength of concrete and density of the stored liquid. According to the results, the proposed method is effective on finding the optimum design with minimum cost.
