  • Background: Based on the importance of ceasing smoking programs to control the regional disparity of smoking behavior in Korea, this study aims to reveal the variation of smoke rate and determinants of it for 229 provinces. An evaluation of the relative efficiency of the cease smoking program under the consideration of regional characteristics was followed. Methods: The main sources of data are the Korean Statistical Information Service and a national survey on the expenditure of public health centers. Multivariate regression is performed to figure the determinants of regional variation of smoking rate. Based on the result of the regression model, clustering analysis was conducted to group 229 regions by their characteristics. Three clusters were generated. Using data envelopment analysis (DEA), relative efficiency scores are calculated. Results from the pooled model which put 229 provinces in one model to score relative efficiency were compared with the cluster-separated model of each cluster. Results: First, the maximum variation of the smoking rate was 16.9%p. Second, sex ration, the proportion of the elder, and high risk drinking alcohol behavior have a significant role in the regional variation of smoking. Third, the population and proportion of the elder are the main variables for clustering. Fourth, dissimilarity on the results of relative efficiency was found between the pooled model and cluster-separated model, especially for cluster 2. Conclusion: This study figured regional variation of smoking rate and its determinants on the regional level. Unconformity of the DEA results between different models implies the issues on regional features when the regional evaluation performed especially on the programs of public health centers.

Methods: The dependent variable included answers yes or no about receiving oral examination while the independent variable included general characteristics, health behavior and oral health behavior. The IBM SPSS Statistics 20.0 program was used for frequency analysis, Chi-square test and logistic regression analysis. Results: Factors influencing affect receiving the oral examination was significantly higher in the answer yes group with the score of 1.18 (95% Cl 1.04-1.34) compared to the group that answered no to the question of marriage, significantly higher in the group that answered yes with the score of 1.36 (95% Cl 1.18-1.56) compared to the group that answered no to exposure to anti-smoking campaigns, significantly higher in the group that answered yes with the score of 3.53 (95% Cl 3.05-4.10) compared to the group that answered yes about health examination experience, significantly higher in the group that answered yes with the score of 1.50 (95% Cl 1.19-1.87) compared to the group that answered no about tooth brushing after breakfast and significantly higher in the group that answered yes with the score of 4.00 (95% Cl 3.55-4.37) compared to the group that answered no to whether they have had scaling experience. Conclusions: The study results show that the elderly had a low rate of oral examination. It is necessary to increase preventive treatments and continue studies on oral health examination in the elderly.

  • This study was aimed to investigate the relationship between abuse and suicide risk focused on the Korean elderly over 65 years old living with their families. The data for the study was collected from 1,193 people in Incheon metropolitan city, Kyunggi and Chungnam province. Among them, 711 elderly adults who experienced abuse within their families, were analysed for the study. The results were as follows: First, the group who had experienced abuse was revealed at 29.8%, and the group who had experienced suicide was revealed at 23.1%. Second, the victims of abuse at older ages affects the risk of suicide. Moreover, considering the elderly population under the control of influencing variables such as socioeconomic traits, ADL and depression, the risk of suicide for the group of being abused was higher than the group that was never abused. Third, four groups of elderly(groups without both abuse and suicide risks, the group with only abuse victims, the group with only suicide risks, and the group with both abuse and suicide risk) were divided based on the victims of abuse and the risk of suicide. The group without abuse and suicide risk was positive in subjective economic status, ADL, number of diseases and depression. On the contrary, the group with both abuse and suicide risk was negative in the above indices. The study indicated that there were some similar traits between abuse risk groups and suicide risk groups, but the group with suicide risk was lower than the group with abuse risk in ADL and depression.

  • In this study, we made a survey of the degree of satisfaction and performance of daily life activities on independent elderly households in the detached house. The purpose of this study is to suggest basic data for elderly housing design to be considered elder's characteristics. A survey carried out for 110 respondents with face to face interview visiting each house between May and June, 1999 with modified and drawn questionnaire from analysis of preparatory investigation data. The questionnaire was composed of the general characteristics of respondents, general characteristics of housing, residents' satisfaction with the use of housing space, performance degree of the elder's daily activities. To analyze the data of 106 cases, frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviations, one-way ANOVA, reliability analysis and Scheffe test were used by running SPSSWIN program. The results on the housing satisfaction and performance of activities in daily life of elderly in the detached house were as follows.: In this survey, the elderly had high value in satisfaction with the size of current house as the mean 3.14 points, but they were dissatisfied with the rising of house as the mean 2.82 points. The satisfaction with living room space was the highest but the satisfaction with toilet space was lower than others. Among the activities of daily life in housing space, housing related activity was the hardest to perform as the mean of 3.15 points. In consequence, consideration on and interest in the planning of residential spaces are needed so that the elderly can perform the action of housing life effectively and efficiently.
