  • The purpose of this paper is to find out and discuss architectural factors for planning the cultural facilities for performing art. For the purpose, the Culture & Art centers in major cities are investigated. The investigation focuses on the analysis of efficient utilization and spatial composition of the Culture & Art centers. Generally the cultural facilities must be located on the site where people can easily access, and should have various kinds and sizes of rooms which people can use for various activities. However, most of the investigated Culture & Art centers are apart from the downtown of the cities, and do not provide the varied spaces. In particular, the sizes of performing halls are too large, and this makes the ratio of room use frequency and the occupancy of seat to be low. To encourage people to use the Culture & Art Centers, the program managers should arrange various programs which reflect the needs of people, and the clients and designers should decide proper room sizes and functions through appropriate analyses of the facilities.

This study mainly deals with concrete and practical architectural contents based on his recent works rather than existing studies about philosophical point of views to his architecture. Because Holl has had turning point from theoretical research to practical application and development stage. Therefore, this study aims to find out Holl's phenomenological approaches that were different from his early works. Nelson-Atkins art museum shows effect of luminosity as well as inflow of light in the phenomenological experiences of light and space. Holl gave new addition building that he designed contrasts of massing, transparency of material, colors to enhance existence of new building through phenomenological experiences. Narrow and long circulation and various focal points provide multi-view points and overlapped spaces in body experiences As a result, Holl shows shifts from theoretical application to architectural utilization. Nelson-Atkins art museum is important in that this project is one of stating points about this shift.

  • Alois Riegl's aesthetic theory of visual perception provided one of important conceptual backgrounds for Vienna Art Nouveau architecture. Riegls theory of visual perception consists of geometric style and two-dimensional transformation. Riegl's theory of geometric style is based on the modern aesthetic theory of abstraction, which says that the artistic perfection can be obtained not from a direct imitation of natural objects, but from an abstract transformation of them. Riegl's theory of two-dimensional transformation, on the other hand, aims at obtaining artistic perfection by disintegrating volumetric conditions of natural things into planes and combining the planes thus obtained into another new world of art. These two theories of Alois Rigl's provided an important aesthetical background for the design strategy of 'abstract ornamentaion of two-dimension' in Vienna Art Nouveau architecture. This paper is to review the basic concept of Alois Rigl's theory of geometric style and two-dimensional transformation.

  • The line of demarcation separating architecture from the art in recent years has blurred, due to the expantionist aspects between. This is a study of the direction which contemporary architecture and art are now taking. The results of the study are as follows: 1. The direction of contemporary architecture is revealed through the works of deconstructivist architects and Hans Hollein. Deconstructivist architects have incooperated abstract forms and concepts for their expression. Also Hans Hollein has brought a new aspect to architecture by combining the aura of spirituality and the use of collage. 2. The direction of contemporary art is revealed through the works of installation artists. Daniel Buren works on the interactivity between the object and the observer. Dan Graham deals with the social issues which caused by the interrelation between the eyes and the visual media. Jae-en Choi works on the actual architectural site and space capturing the spirit of what the space is for shile Jung-hwa Jung deals with the layers of perception within a particular space. Another realm coming into being is the cooperation between artists and architects. The cooperation of Holl and Acconci is expressed through their joint project Storefront Gallery. It is the development of Accocis concept of boundary and Holls methodology. Another example of this realm is revealed through the Fish Gallery of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. Gehry was introduced to the nature of material by Serra and Serra learned of new ways of viewing the existence of space between materials from Gehry. These new relationships between contemporary architecture and art are reciprocal in nature are indicators of a dynamic and new changing cooperation now emerging.

  • ^x This study is an attempt to present the possibility of environmental aesthetics and its characteristic form in Korea. This paper investigated the concept of art as a traditional theory of aesthetics through R.G. Collingwood and present- day analytic philosophers who had been influenced by the ordinary language philosophers in 1950s. Accordingly, the study focused on the institutional theory of art which was developed in reaction to M. Weitz′s views. The institutional theory of art concentrates attention on the nonexhibited characteristics that works of art have An virtue of being embedded in an institutional matrix which may be called "the artworld"and argues that these characteristics are essential and defining. Taking this position, the paper examined the relation between environment and art as aesthetic object because it would be one of the ways to find tole possibility and foundation of environmental aesthetics. Furthermore, these works will be the basis to create our proper landscape or ′our own environment′as a significant and a mental cultural landscape.

  • This study aims to reveal the multilayered nature of the formal aspects of communal house architecture in North Korea. It is said that Kim Jong Il, who emerged as a successor after the mid-1970s, brought about a change in the architecture, leading the construction of a sculptural communal house on Gwangbok Street in 1989, and wrote The art of architecture (1992), which theorized architecture as an object of art. Therefore, it is widely perceived that the communal house was transformed from a simple form of living function to an artistic architecture with the rise of Kim Jong Il. This study, however, argues that this change was the result of an internal evolution in North Korean architecture, rather than a simple change in the position of an individual in power. It seeks to move away from the dichotomy that divides the communal house into two periods: the "KimIl-sung period," in which the communal house was laid out in a simple form to provide mass supply and a socialist lifestyle, and the "Kim Jong-il period," in which the communal house took on an artistic form, such as the Gwangbok Street communal house, in the early years of reconstruction. In the 1950s and 1960s, before KimJong-il's arrival, the communal house form was not simply a flat arrangement, but a three-dimensional and sculptural consideration of the effect on the cityscape.

  • The professional alliance between disciplines of architecture and furniture design in the interwar years as displayed in the prominent architectural exhibitions of the era is interesting in the context of professionalization of American architecture. The way furniture design gradually became part of the architectural shows not only reflected but provided the practical field in which the architectural institution sought, under the new social order since the mid 1910s, a new professional cast-departing from the former milieu in the realm of high-art by the Beaux-Arts Movement. Exhibitions held by the Architectural League of New York in the 1920s revealed that the early impetus for reformation toward efficiency had been subsumed by the system of Beaux-Arts. By contrast, "The Architect and the Industrial Arts" show of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in which the most prominent architects of the era exercised their professional expertise in the design of "Moderne Style" interior furnishings, clearly shows how architects, in the milieu of expanding commercial market, sought to align their profession as industrial designers.
