  • A total length of sperm whales can be estimated by measuring the Inter-Pulse Interval(IPI) of their clicks composed by multiple pulses. The IPI is caused by the two-way travel time of the sound transmission in the spermaceti within the whale head. Therefore, the IPI can be used to measure the whale's total length based on allometric relationships between head and body length. In this paper, the click signals recorded in the East Sea, Korea in 2017 were analyzed to estimate the size of sperm whales. The size of sperm whales calculated by the relationship between IPI and body length was 9.9 m to 10.9 m, which is corresponding to the size of an adult female or a juvenile male sperm whale. This non-lethal acoustic method has been demonstrated to accurately estimate the sperm whale size, and can provide useful information for domestic sperm whale monitoring.

  • The baleen plates of mysticetes provide valuable insights into their recent foraging activities through stable isotope analyses, with variations in carbon and nitrogen isotopic compositions allowing for the reconstruction of seasonal migration patterns. In March 2023, a sei whale Balaenoptera borealis carcass was stranded off the coast of Buan, Jeonbuk, in the Yellow Sea, Korea. The whale was a young male, measuring 9.39 m in length. The total length of its baleen plate was approximately 34 cm, with δ13C values ranging from -20.9 to -18.8‰, and δ15N values ranging from 8.5 to 12.0‰. The variations in carbon and nitrogen isotopes were as much as 1.26‰ and 1.94‰, respectively. No significant periodicity was observed in the stable isotope fluctuations, which may be attributable to the age of the whale. However, when compared with previous studies on stable isotope analyses of sei whale baleen plates, this study showed similar patterns, as the δ13C values gradually increased and δ15N values decreased. The period during which these two isotope values crossed probably reflects the weaning phase of the whale.

  • The intent of this study is to suppose the time of engraving of Bangudae-rockgraving-picture and the change of the ancient soci-ety related to the Postglacial transgression and regression in the Ulsan Bay. Main results can be summed up as follows; 1. It is supposed that the shoreline in the maximum Postglacial transgression of the Ulsan bay has arrived to Gulhwa-Ri about 14km upstream from the present Taehwa River mouth. 2,.This transgression has occurred about 6,000-5,000 years ago. The prehistoric men around the Bangudae had hunted the whale near the inner bay From this time the people had begun to engrave pictures on the Rock of Bangudae for the ceremony and instruction of the whale hunting,. 3. Since then the shoreline had regressed and the whale hunting area had moved to distant area from the residence and the number of the captured whales had diminished. The whale hunting society had been transformed to the overland animals on the Bangudae-rockgraving- pictures had gradually increased.

  • Environmental Literacy is needed to establish a sustainable society and can be very well developed through Outdoor Environmental Education(OEE). However, establishing OEE in Korea is a very difficult. Thus, it is very important to find out which factors influence the sustainability of OEE. The purpose of this study is to identify those factors. Participatory observation research and some interviews were used in "The Whale Class" of the University of Georgia in the United States. Major findings and recommendations were as follows: (1) OEEs give participants good experiences about the environment; (2) Program operators of OEEs are enthusiastic about education and environmental conservation; (3) Good educational practices such as cooperative education and participation in conversation foster learning; (4) Good organizations with guest lectures from various environmental fields would be beneficial; (5) Public information about environmental programs would be helpful; (6) Administrative support for those organizations connected to environmental programs would be useful; and (7) OEE provide reflection activities to foster Environmental Literacy.

  • Line transect data from sighting surveys conducted in the East Sea, Korea in 2000, 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006 were analysed to estimate densities and numbers of minke whale. The half-normal model was fit to the survey in 2000 and the uniform model was the most fitable to the survey in 2002 and 2006, and the surveys in 2003 and 2005 were fit by the hazard-rate model. The estimated density of minke whale in the survey in 2000 was estimated as 0.026 individuals/$km^2$ (CV=0.409; 95% CI 0.011-0.065) and was higher than the survey in 2002 estimated as 0.018 individuals/$km^2$ (CV=0.329; 95% CI: 0.009-0.034). The estimated density of minke whale in the survey in 2003 was estimated as 0.033 individuals/$km^2$ (95% CI: 0.008-0.139) with the highest CV 0.760. The highest density was estimated in the survey in 2005 with 0.053 individuals/$km^2$ (95% CI: 0.020-0.141). The Lowest CV (0.306) was estimated in the survey in 2006 with 0.025 individuals/$km^2$ (95% CI: 0.014-0.046). A total of 500 bootstrap samples were generated within each stratum. Density, CV and 95% CI of each surveys were increased than analytic results except the survey in 2003. There were no increasing or decreasing annual trends in the density of minke whales observed during the study period. A long-term monitor and survey is needed to assess project minke whale abundance in the East Sea.

  • The present study examined the characteristic of regional food culture observed in prehistoric Daegok-ri petroglyph based on the history of art, archeological materials and existing whale eating customs. Daegok-가 petroglyph expressed animals in the sky, on the land and in the sea. According to the relic, the most preferred land and marin animals were deer and whale, respectively. In terms of petroglyphic techniques. earlier patch engraving was used mainly to express marin animal whale, and later line engraving to express land animal deer. This implies the possibility that as whale hunting declined due to regional environmental change the source of protein was switched to land animals. Among relics found in Dongsam-dong shell mound, which is a remain from the Neolithic Period, whale bones appear only in shell mounds of the Neolithic Period in coastal areas, and shell mounds until the Ironze Age, which were the agricultural Age, were found the bones of land animals such as deer and wild boar. This shows that in the petroglyph thematic land animals expressed in line engraving, which is a technique later than patch engraving, were major food resources for the supply of protein. Moreover, in terms of art, Daegok-ri petroglyph describes 'advanced hunters', suggesting that it was the Neolithic Period and showing 문 aspect of regional food culture based on hunting and fishing. The credibility, which prehistoric men expressed in Daegok-ri petroglyph before the invention of letters, was also proved by archeological articles.

  • Globally, the survival of many marine mammals is threatened by entanglement in fishing gear and there is also a high bycatch in Korea. This study analyzed the bycatch data of most cetacean species for Korean waters from 2011 to 2017, including the narrow-ridged finless porpoise Neophocaena asiaeorientalis, common dolphin Delphinus delphis, common minke whale Balaenoptera acutorostrata, and Pacific white-sided dolphin Lagenorhynchus obliquidens. A total of 12,262 cetaceans were captured as bycatch. In the Yellow and South Seas, the main species affected was the narrow-ridged finless porpoise, with 82.9% caught in stow nets and 11.5% captured in trawls. In the East Sea, the common minke whale, common dolphin, and Pacific white-sided dolphin were reported. The main common minke whale bycatch (43.5%) was in set nets, while common dolphins (49.0%) and Pacific white-sided dolphins (91.4%) were mainly caught in gill nets. The narrow-ridged finless porpoise, common dolphin, and common minke whale were most commonly reported in March, April, and May, while the Pacific white-sided dolphin was most frequently captured as bycatch in January and December. Each of these factors (season and gear responsible for bycatch) depended on the characteristics of the cetacean species. To conserve cetaceans, it is necessary to reduce the bycatch.

  • The film The Whale goes beyond just depicting one aspect of the life of a morbidly obese man. As the audience watches Charlie, the main character who helplessly chose to live a morbidly obese life, we are compelled to reflect on what it means for ourselves to rise from the ground as we live in a gravitational field. Ultimately, this film is in line with director Darren Arnofsky's previous masterpiece, Black Swan. While the Oedipus complex runs through both films, this film goes one step further than Black Swan to face head-on the theme of "swollen foot," which is the original meaning of Oedipus. Through this move, we realize the essence of the Oedipus complex-something more fundamental than castration anxiety-something that we have been missing.

  • The minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) is found in all the oceans of the world, and is a major whale species off the east coast of Korea. To estimate its abundance, the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) of Korea performed ship surveys in June of 1999 and May of 2000. During these surveys, scientists found two interesting facts, i.e. most whales were sighted close to shore, and whales appeared to move north from May to June. (omitted)
