Drag Reduction Characteristics of Surfactant by a Rotating Disk Apparatus (회전원판장치를 이용한 계면활성제의 마찰저항감소)

  • The characteristics of drag reduction and rheological behaviors were investigated using cationic surfactants, whose microstructures are known to change when concentration of the surfactant exceeds CMC. The firstly formed spherical micelles change to rodlike or disklike micelles because of packing between surfactants micells, and of thermodynamic perference. The drag reduction becomes significant when the concentration increases over this micellar transient point. Drag reductions were measured as a function of concentration, and rheological characteristics of the surfactant were further investigated to understand the correlation between their rheological properties and drag reduction. Micelles show the non-Newtonian behavior, and shear thickening behaviors were observed due to the structural development. In addition, structural developments were determined by adding the counter-ion in case of DOBON-G.

Numerical Study of the Heat Removal Performance for a Passive Containment Cooling System using MARS-KS with a New Empirical Correlation of Steam Condensation (새로운 응축열전달계수 상관식이 적용된 MARS-KS를 활용한 원자로건물 피동냉각계통 열제거 성능의 수치적 연구)

  • The passive containment cooling system (PCCS) has been designed to remove the released decay heat during the accident by means of the condensation heat transfer phenomenon to guarantee the safety of the nuclear power plant. The heat removal performance of the PCCS is mainly governed by the condensation heat transfer of the steam-air mixture. In this study, the heat removal performance of the PCCS was evaluated by using the MARS-KS code with a new empirical correlation for steam condensation in the presence of a noncondensable gas. A new empirical correlation implemented into the MARS-KS code was developed as a function of parameters that affect the condensation heat transfer coefficient, such as the pressure, the wall subcooling, the noncondensable gas mass fraction and the aspect ratio of the condenser tube. The empirical correlation was applied to the MARS-KS code to replace the default Colburn-Hougen model. The various thermal-hydraulic parameters during the operation of the PCCS follonwing a large-break loss-of-coolant-accident were analyzed. The transient pressure behavior inside the containment from the MARS-KS with the empirical correlation was compared with calculated with the Colburn-Hougen model.

Experimental Study on Characteristics of Steam Condensation in a Sub-cooled Water Pool (과냉각수조에서 증기응축 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Experimental study on characteristics of direct contact condensation of steam discharged into a sub-cooled water pool has been performed using five different sizes of horizontal nozzle over a wide range of steam mass fluxes and pool temperatures. Steam condensation phenomena have been observed visually and by taking pictures of steam jets using a high speed video camera. Two different steam jet shapes such as ellipsoidal shape and conical shape were typically observed for a stable steam jet, depending on the steam mass flux and pool temperature. The steam jet expansion ratio and the steam jet length as well as the condensation heat transfer coefficients were determined. The effect of steam mass flux, pool temperature, and nozzle diameter on these parameters were also discussed. Empirical correlations for the steam jet lengths and the condensation heat transfer coefficients as a function of steam mass flux and condensation driving potential were established. The axial and radial temperature distributions in steam jet and in surrounding water were measured. The effect of steam mass flux, pool temperature, and nozzle diameter were also discussed. The condensation regime map, which consists of six regimes such as chugging, transient chugging, condensation oscillation, stable condensation, bubble condensation oscillation, and intermittent oscillation condensation, were established. In addition, the dynamic pressures at the pool wall were measured. The close relation of dynamic pressure and steam condensation mode, which is also dependent on steam mass flux and pool temperature, was found.

  • In this paper, the research on the energy storage system adapting super-capacitor has been performed. The most advanced features compared to the conventional lead-acid battery systems is that it can obtain high power capability due to the super capacitor power characteristics. The suggested system can attain high power in short times and achieve high power quality improvements. The application areas are power quality improvement system, motor start power which requires high power during transient times. The energy conversion system consists of bi-directional converter and inverter and advantages of high speed, high power charging and discharging performances. The design steps for the two loop controller of the bi-directional inverter are suggested and verified by the experiment and manufacturing. The two loop controller design starts from linearized transfer function which is calculated from the state averaging model including state decoupling method. The current controller requirements are 20% overshoot and settling time and voltage controller are no overshoot and settling time which is 10 times longer than current controller. The design is verified from the step input response. The designed controllers have unity power factor characteristics and thus can improve the power quality of the grid. It also has fast response time and zero steady state error.

  • A stochastic way using continuous time Markov process is presented to model the one-dimensional nuclide transport in fractured rock matrix as an extended study for previous work [1]. A nuclide migration model by the continuous time Markov process for single planar fractured rock matrix, which is considered as a transient system where a process by which the nuclide is diffused into the rock matrix from the fracture may be no more time homogeneous, is compared with a conventional deterministic analytical solution. The primary desired quantities from a stochastic model are the expected values and variance of the state variables as a function of time. The time-dependent probability distributions of nuclides are presented for each discretized compartment of the medium given intensities of transition. Since this model is discrete in medium space, parameters which affect nuclide transport could be easily incorporated for such heterogeneous media as the fractured rock matrix and the layered porous media. Even though the model developed in this study was shown to be sensitive to the number of discretized compartment showing numerical dispersion as the number of compartments are decreased, with small compensating of dispersion coefficient, the model agrees well to analytical solution.

Effect of engineered barriers on the leach rate of cesium from spent PWR fuel (가압경수로 사용후핵연료 중 세슘의 침출에 미치는 공학적 방벽 영향)

  • To identify the effect of engineered barriers on the leach rate of cesium from spent PWR fuel under a synthetic granitic groundwater, the related leach tests with and without bentonite or metals have been performed up to about 6 years. The leach rates were decreased as a function of leaching time and then became a constant after a certain period. The period in a bare spent fuel was much longer than that with bentonite or metal sheets. The cumulative fraction of cesium released from the spent fuel with bentonite or with copper and stainless steel sheets was steadily increased, but the fraction from bare fuel was rapidly and then sluggishly increased. However, the values deducted its gap inventory from the cumulative fraction of cesium released from the bare fuel was almost very close to the others. These suggest that the initial release of cesium from bare fuel might be dependant on its gap inventory and the effect of engineered barriers on the long-term leach rate of cesium would be insignificant but the rate with engineered barriers could be reduced in the initial transient period due to their retardation effect. And the long-term leach rate of cesium from spent fuel in a repository would be approached to a constant rate of $2\times10^{-2}g/m^2-day$.

Changes in Circulatory and Respiratory Activities Observed on Men in an Engine Room of a Navy Ship (함정 기관실내 활동의 순환 및 호흡 기능에 대한 영향)

  • Circulatory and respiratory activities were observed in men exposed to the environment of engine room of a cruising Republic of Korea Navy ship and compared to the control values obtained in an ordinary laboratory room on land. The environment of an engine room of cruising navy ship was presumed to be a multiple stress acting on men. The environment of the engine room included high temperature $(35-42^{\circ}C)$, low relative humidity (20-38% saturation), vibration (about 7 cycles per second), rolling and pitching of ship and noises. Sixteen men were divided into two groups consisted of each 8 subjects. Subjects of sea duty group had experience of continuous on board duty averaging 3.5 years. Men of land duty group had no experience of on board activity. On land observations were made on one day prior to the boarding and leaving the port and four days after landing. In between observations in the engine room were made on the first, 5 th, 9 th, 12 th, and 14 th day of on board activity. The whole experimental period lasted for 20 days. Measurements on circulatory and respiratory parameters were at standing resting state (after 30 minutes standing in the case of on land study and 15 minutes in engine room study) and within one minute after cessation of on the spot running of which rhythm was 30/min. and lasted for 5 minutes. Oxygen consumption and pulmonary function test were done in the period of two minutes from the 3rd to 5th minutes of running. The following results were obtained. 1. Body temperature showed no change regardless of group difference or on land or on board measurements. 2. Pulse rate increased markedly after boarding the ship id both groups. Pulse rate increased from the first day on board at rest and after exercise as compared to the on land control value. This increase in pulse rate was more marked after exercise. Sea duty group showed less increase in pulse rate at rest than the land duty group. Standing and resting pulse rate of sea duty group on lam was 81 and increased to 87 at the 5th day on board and remained smaller than the land duty group throughout the period on board. Control standing and resting pulse rate of land duty group on land was 76 and reached 89 at the 9th day on board and thereafter decreased a little. Pulse rate of land duty group at rest on board remained greater than that of sea duty group throughout the period on board. 3. Systolic blood pressure of sea duty group increased after boarding the ship and remained higher than the control value on land. In the land duty group, however, systolic blood pressure decreased during the period on board the ship. Diastolic blood pressure decreased in both groups. 4. Resting breathing rate of land duty group increased and remained higher than the control value on land. In sea duty group, however, resting breathing rate showed a transient increase on the 1st day on board and decreased thereafter to the control value on land and kept the same level throughout the period of cruise. Absolute value of breathing rate in the sea duty group was greater than the land duty group both at rest and after exercise. 5. There was a lowering of breathing efficiency in both groups. Thus, increases in tidal volume and minute ventilation volume and decreases in maximum breathing capacity, vital capacity, capacity ratio and air velocity Index were observed after boarding the ship. An increase in ventilation equivalent was also observed in both groups. The lowering of breathing efficiency was more marked in the land duty group than the sea duty group. 6. Energy expediture increased in both groups during their stay on the ship and was more marked in the sea duty group. 7, Lactate concentration in venous blood at rest and after exercise increased after boarding the ship and no group difference was observed.
