  • This study aims to investigate the interplay between education and local roads on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the Philippines, using economic growth as an instrument. The study used the quantitative research design applying both descriptive and inferential statistics. A combination of Two Stage Least Square Regression Model and three approaches in Panel Regression Model such as Pooled Least Square, Fixed Effect Model, and Random Effect Model were utilized in order to study the effects of education and local roads on foreign direct investment of the Philippines. Based on Fixed Effect regression results, higher education graduates and local road investments, as conditioned by economic growth, were significant factors in order to increase the foreign direct investment in the Philippines. Accordingly, a unit increase in higher education graduates, as conditioned by economic growth, leads to 8.758 unit increases in the foreign direct investment. While, a unit increased in local road investments, as conditioned by economic growth, leads to a 0.002 decrease in foreign direct investment. The regression results of the study suggest that the Foreign Direct Investment in the regions such as CAR, I, II, IV-B, V, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII, XIII, and ARMM are higher compared to Region IV-A.

  • A small scale survey was performed to know the infection status of intestinal parasite in children of the residential institutions and street communities in Metro Manila, Philippines. A total of 284 stool samples from 11 institutions and 3 street communities was examined by the formalin-ether concentration method. The scotch tape anal swab was adapted to 121 children to investigate the infection status of Enterovius vermicularis. It was found out that 62.0% of the children examined were positive for one or more intestinal parasites. Multiple infections were observed in 34.2% of the children. Among 172 children who gave detail information, the prevalence for Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, and hookworm was 36.0%, 44.8%, and 7.0% respectively. Of the children examined, 47.7% were found to be harboring parasitic protozoans such as Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, and Blastocystis hominis. The most prevalent of these protozoans was B. hominis with an infection rate of 40.7%. The prevalence of these infections among children living in institutions was relatively high. More efforts should be made to implement anthelminthic programs including bi-annual follow-up treatments.

  • In general, solid waste arises from lots of human activities such as domestic, agricultural, industrial, commercial, waste water treatment, construction, and mining activities etc. If the waste is not properly disposal and treated, it will have a negative impact to the environment, and hygienic conditions in urban areas and pollute the air with greenhouse gases (GHG), ground water, as well as the soil and crops. In this paper, the Carbon Resources Recycling Appropriate Technology Center feasibility studies are reported at Bantayan Island, Philippines on the municipal solid waste management. The present objective of our study is to characterize the municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash and case study of MSWI production status in Bantayan, Philippines. Currently, wide variety of smart technologies available for MSWI management in developed countries. Recycling is the other major alternative process for MSWI landfill issues. In this paper, the feasibility studies of applied appropriate technologies for the municipal solid waste generation in Bantayan Island, Philippines are reported.

  • Morphology and molecular phylogeny of a red algal species, Hypnea flexicaulis that is recently described from Japan, were investigated based on 23 collections from Korea (21), Taiwan (1), and the Philippines (1). Hypnea flexicaulis has percurrent axes with flexuous, antler-like branches which have wide branching angles, and abaxially curved ultimate branchlets. In order to study DNA divergence and phylogenetic relationships of the species, we determined plastid rbcL and mitochondrial cox1 sequences from the 23 collections. All 21 specimens from five different locations in Korea were almost identical to H. flexicaulis from Japan in rbcL sequences. Although there was a difference of three to five base pairs (bp) between samples from Korea and the Philippines or between the Philippines and Taiwan, Bayesian analyses of the rbcL data showed that all specimens from Korea, Japan, the Philippines, and Taiwan were strongly monophyletic. However, it is interesting that specimens from the Philippines differed by 31-34 base pairs in mitochondrial cox1 gene from those of materials from Korea and Taiwan, which differed by one to seven bp in rbcL between them. Although H. boergesenii is different from H. flexicaulis in having many antler-like branchlets, both appeared as sisters in all analyses of the rbcL data. This is the first report of H. flexicaulis from Korea based on morphology, rbcL, and cox1 gene sequences.

  • Two new species of the genus Nesodillo Verhoeff, 1926, N. kimi and N. philippinensis, are described from Philippines. For the shape of frontal shield, Nesodillo kimi resembles N. monticola (Vandel, 1973) from New Guinea, but differs from it in the shape of male pleopod 1 exopod. N. philippinensis is distinguished from N. kimi by the shape of frontal shield not depressed in the middle of upper border, and of telson with broadly rounded distal margin.

  • Two new marine tardigrades, florarctus kwoni n. sp. and Batillipes philippinensis n. sp. belonging to Halechiniscidae and Batillipedidae, respectively, are described on the basis of the specimens sieved from sublittoral coral sands and shell gravels of Palawan Island, the Philippines. florarctus kwoni n. sp. is characterized by the rocket-shaped aliform expansion, with the distal margin of posterior ala flattened. Batillipes philippinensis n. sp. closely resembles B. similis Schulz, 1955 and B. annulatus De Zio, 1962. However, it is clearly discernible from the former by the shape of lateral body projection between leg III and leg IV, and the relative length of cirrus E and the spine on leg IV, and from the latter by the shape of the lateral body projection and the clavar shape. This is the first report of the marine tardigrades from the Philippines.

  • This study compares brand equity of the fast food industry between Korea and the Philippines. This comparison is conducted by measuring a price premium that the college students in both countries would pay for hamburgers. Three popular fast food chains in each country, Lotteria, McDonalds', and Burger King in Korea and Jollibee, McDonalds', and Burger King in the Philippines, were chosen for the study. Utilizing a brand-based comparative approach, the findings of the study indicated that Burger King showed the highest brand equity for the premium brand image in both countries, whereas both local brands had a lower brand equity compared to international brands. The results of the study provide useful information for international and local brand managers that wish to establish strategies for a brand image, as well as to manage brand equity effectively. • In line with the goal of achieving a low carbon future, the Philippines made an aspirational target which aims to increase the total installed capacity coming from renewable energy (RE) to at least 20,000 MW by 2040. The country's RE sector has progressively advanced over the years following the enactment of its comprehensive RE Law in 2008. Among other RE technologies, solar achieved the highest installation growth from 2008 to 2018. The paper seeks to assess whether the Philippines' RE target by 2040 is achievable in terms of the current status and future outlook for RE. Major roadblocks that hamper RE development are identified and discussed, including some recommendations for policy-making and energy planning.

  • Tidal stream energy extraction remains a site-specific resource due to the "first generation" criteria requiring high-velocity tidal streams. Most studies on tidal energy and turbine blade design heavily focus on installation sites with higher velocity conditions that are non-existent in tropical countries such as the Philippines. To shorten this gap, this review paper tackles tidal turbine design considerations for low-energetic regions such as the tropics. In-depth discussions of operating principles, methods of analysis, and designs of tidal turbine blades are presented. Notable tidal stream projects around the world are also mentioned in the paper. Also, it provides a perspective on the potential of this renewable energy to produce electricity for various sites in the Philippines. Finally, the paper emphasizes the need for new tidal turbine blade designs to be viable in tropical regions, such as the Philippines.
