  • Our present ability to work with video has not been confined to wired communication environment. This paper describes the new technological trend of wireless video communication. In wireless video communication, unlike wired network, several techniques are needed. At first, error robust video coding is essential. Due to characteristics of wireless channel, the system is exposed to more error prone environment. In addition, encoded video bit streams are vulnerable to the error because of the entropy coding. Recently many frameworks are developed to cope with this problem. We just explore the numerous robust video coding approaches with the viewing of error control. And more we discuss other on going research topics in this wireless video communication fields like low-power assumption design, trans-codec technique, and rate control schemes in brief.

  • The major error factors that degrade the efficiency of coherent beam combining (CBC) are numerically studied in a comprehensive manner, paying particular attention to phase, tip-tilt, polarization angle, and beam quality. The power in the bucket (PIB), normalized to the zero-error PIB, is used as a figure of merit to quantify the effect of each error factor. To maintain a normalized PIB greater than or equal to 95% in a 3-channel CBC configuration, the errors in phase, tip-tilt, and polarization angle should be less than 1.06 radians, 1.25 ㎛, and 1.06 radians respectively, when each of the three parameters is calculated independently with the other two set to zero. In a worst-case scenario of the composite errors within the parameter range for the independent-95%-normalized-PIB condition, the aggregate effect would reduce the normalized PIB to 83.8%. It is noteworthy that the PIB performances of a CBC system, depending on phase and polarization-angle errors, share the same characteristic feature. A statistical approach for each error factor is also introduced, to assess a CBC system with an extended number of channels. The impact of the laser's beam-quality factor M2 on the combining efficiency is also analyzed, based on a super-Gaussian beam. When M2 increases from 1 to 1.3, the normalized PIB is reduced by 2.6%, 11.8%, 12.8%, and 13.2% for a single-channel configuration and 3-, 7-, and 19-channel CBC configurations respectively. This comprehensive numerical study is expected to pave the way for advances in the evaluation and design of multichannel CBC systems and other related applications.

  • Performance of a force-torque sensor is affected significantly by an error signal that is included in the sensor signal. The error sources may be classified mainly into two categories: one is a structural error due to inaccuracy of sensor body, and the other is a noise signal existing in sensed information. This paper presents a principle of 6-axis force-torque sensor briefly, a double-hole structure to be able to improve a structural error, and then a signal conditioning to reduce the effect of a noise signal. The validity of the proposed method is investigated through experimental study, which shows that SIN ratio is improved significantly in our experimental setup, and the sensor can be implemented cheaply with reasonable performance.

  • This paper studies two sequential procedures to estimate a monotone convex function using $L_2$ monotonization and uniform convexification; one, denoted by FMSC, monotonizes the data first and then, convexifis the monotone estimate; the other, denoted by FCSM, first convexifies the data and then monotonizes the convex estimate. We show that two shape modifiers are not commutable and so does FMSC and FCSM. We compare them numerically in uniform error(UE) and integrated mean squared error(IMSE). The results show that FMSC has smaller uniform error(UE) and integrated mean squared error(IMSE) than those of FCSC.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient lossless compression algorithm using spatial and temporal information. The proposed method obtains higher lossless compression of images than other lossless compression techniques. It is divided into two parts, a motion adaptation based predictor part and a residual error coding part. The proposed nonlinear predictor can reduce prediction error by learning from its past prediction errors. The predictor decides the proper selection of the spatial and temporal prediction values according to each past prediction error. The reduced error is coded by existing context coding method. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has better performance than those of existing context modeling methods.

  • This paper proposes the realization of state-space digital filters with minimum output error variance. The algorithm is transforms of controllability and observability gramian in linear time invariant systems by weighted function and can improve performance of the digital filters by reducing the put error variance for state space coeffient variation. A numerical example shows that algorithm structure has much lower output error variance than that of other four structures(canonical, parallel, statistical sensitivity, balanced).

  • The error rate performances of digital modulation systems in fluenced by impulsive noise have been investigated and discussed in the enviroment of electromagnetic interference(EMI). Using the derived equations for the probabilities of error of L-level ASK, M-ary PSK, MSK, QAM, and APK signals, the error rate performance of each system has been evaluated and compared each other. The results show that, in the case of gaussian noise enviornment, PSK system is superior to the other systems and the digital amplitude modulation systems are inferior on the contrary. In the environment of impulsive noise, the MSK at low interfere level shows the best error rate performance but in the high level interferer environment, the PSK shows the best error rate performance. Also it is known that the digital amplitude modulation systems are scarcely influenced by the variation of interfere level.

  • The existing multiple modulus-based self-recovering equalization type has not been applied to initial equalization. Instead, it was used for steady-state performance improvement. In this paper, for the self-recovering equalization type that considers the multiple modulus as a desired response, the initial convergence performance was improved by extending the dynamics of the errors using error boosting and their characteristics were analyzed. Error boosting in the proposed method was carried out in proportion to a symbol decision for the equalizer output. Furthermore, having the initial convergence capability by extending the dynamics of errors, it showed excellent performance in the initial convergence rate and steady-state error level. In particular, the proposed method can be applied to the entire process of equalization through a single algorithm; the existing methods of switching over or the selection of other operation modes, such as concurrent operating with other algorithms, are not necessary. The usefulness of the proposed method was verified by simulations performed under the channel conditions with multipath propagation and additional noise, and for performance analysis of self-recovering equalization for high-order signal constellations.

  • Aggregate Production Planning determines levels of production, human resources, inventory to maximize company's profits and fulfill customer's demands based on demand forecasts. Since performance of aggregate production planning heavily depends on accuracy of given forecasting demands, choosing an accurate forecasting method should be antecedent for achieving a good aggregate production planning. Generally, typical forecasting error metrics such as MSE (Mean Squared Error), MAD (Mean Absolute Deviation), MAPE (Mean Absolute Percentage Error), and CFE (Cumulated Forecast Error) are utilized to choose a proper forecasting method for an aggregate production planning. However, these metrics are designed only to measure a difference between real and forecast demands and they are not able to consider any results such as increasing cost or decreasing profit caused by forecasting error. Consequently, the traditional metrics fail to give enough explanation to select a good forecasting method in aggregate production planning. To overcome this limitation of typical metrics for forecasting method this study suggests a new metric, WACFE (Weighted Absolute and Cumulative Forecast Error), to evaluate forecasting methods. Basically, the WACFE is designed to consider not only forecasting errors but also costs which the errors might cause in for Aggregate Production Planning. The WACFE is a product sum of cumulative forecasting error and weight factors for backorder and inventory costs. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed metric by conducting intensive experiments with demand data sets from M3-competition. Finally, we showed that the WACFE provides a higher correlation with the total cost than other metrics and, consequently, is a better performance in selection of forecasting methods for aggregate production planning.
