  • Objectives : This paper aims to solve difficulties surrounding the verses related to lobes of liver in the 『Yixuerumen』. Methods : First, relevant verses were selected from the 『Yixuerumen』, then compared to texts from which they had originated. The differences and contrarieties between the texts were resolved through the perspective of plant taxonomy. Results : Wangbing's 'buye(布葉)' was taken as the seed leaf of the dicotyledonous plant and corrected to 'daye(大葉)' by Li Chan. The expression 'Yixiaoye(一小葉)' was understood as describing the many main leaves that look like one big leaf, which grow in between the seed leaves. 『Nanjing』's interpretation of there being three leaves on the left, and four on the right describes the leaf pattern that grows in alternation. Conclusions : Through analysis of the verses related to lobes of liver in the 『Yixuerumen』, we can presume that Li Chan had the knowledge and understanding required in plant taxonomy such as characteristics of a dicotyledonous plant and phyllotaxis.

  • Objectives : In this paper, we investigated the applicability of text mining to Korean Medical Classics and suggest that researchers of Medical Classics utilize this methodology. Methods : We applied text mining to the Huangdi's internal classic, a seminal text of Korean Medicine, and visualized networks which represent connectivity of terms and documents based on vector similarity. Then we compared this outcome to the prior knowledge generated through conventional qualitative analysis and examined whether our methodology could accurately reflect the keyword of documents, clusters of terms, and relationships between documents. Results : In the term network, we confirmed that Qi played a key role in the term network and that the theory development based on relativity between Yin and Yang was reflected. In the document network, Suwen and Lingshu are quite distinct from each other due to their differences in description form and topic. Also, Suwen showed high similarity between adjacent chapters. Conclusions : This study revealed that text mining method could yield a significant discovery which corresponds to prior knowledge about Huangdi's internal classic. Text mining can be used in a variety of research fields covering medical classics, literatures, and medical records. In addition, visualization tools can also be utilized for educational purposes.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this paper is to study the metaphor that the liver is the admiral from which strategic planning is derived in 『Suwen Linglanmidianlun』 in relation to Liver function. Methods : Annotations to the verse along with descriptions of strategic planning in classical texts and their relation were examined. Results : Previous annotators described the Admiral organ and Strategic Planning separately, in which it is difficult to fully explain the totality the two. They cannot be separated from each other, and only when they are in dependence of each other can they become complete. Liver function as described in classical texts and contemporary text books such as detoxification and sterilization all embody this meaning of strategic planning of an admiral. Conclusions : Reinterpretation of the Liver function based on an integrated understanding of the Liver as described in 『Suwen Linglanmidianlun』 is required. This will allow for better understanding of what the metaphor means, and to better connect this description to Liver physiology for an integrated understanding of the Liver itself in Korean Medicine.

  • Objectives : This paper examines verses from the 『Bencaoshu』 that are quoted in the 『Benjingshuzheng』 to determine its characteristics. Methods : Based on the two texts, contents by Liuqianjiang in the 『Benjingshuzheng』 were selected, of which his pharmacology was examined to determine common characteristics. Results & Conclusions : Based on what Zouzhu adopted from the pharmacology of the 『Bencaoshu』, it could be said that he focused on the interaction between Yin/Yang and Five Phases, the ascending/descending/exiting/entering of Qi, and the smooth circulation and communication of Qi. Constant Yin/Yang movement as a result of continuous circulation of Qi was emphasized. Zouzhu's adoption of the pharmacology of the 『Bencaoshu』 is in indication of his approval of Liuqianjiang's descriptive methods, and his will to follow and further develop the pharmacology of the 『Bencaoshu』 that is based on the theories of the 『Shanghanlun』 and the 『Jinguiyaole』.

  • Objectives : This paper tried to explain the meaning of Shaoyangzhugu in Huangdineijing. Methods : The opinions on these matters that can be found in the past studies are analyzed to assess the strengths and limitations of today's explanations on the meaning of Shaoyangzhugu. Furthermore, this study attempted to suggest a more rational way of understanding that can supplement the opinions before. Results : The opinions that fail to provide a rational explanation on Shaoyangzhugu were disposed. It was found that the explanation of Shaoyangzhugu through the Shaoyang's pivot function has a potential of providing a rational understanding of Shaoyangzhugu. Following this, this study made a deduction based on the functions of gallbladder found in the Huangdineijing and explained the Shaoyang's pivot function. This study then proceeded to provide an explanation regarding Shaoyangzhugu based on this. Conclusions : Shaoyangzhugu in Huangdineijing is a function to maintain homeostasis of the skeleton of the whole body by Shaoyang's pivot function.

  • Objectives :The Korean Medical concept Gak-Gi(脚氣) is understood as being identical to Beriberi and Vitamin B1 deficiency, without the necessary investigation that is required in such identification. Therefore this study aims to systematically compare these two concepts for thorough investigation. Methods : Research was carried out in two directions. First, the cause, symptoms, treatment principles of Gak-Gi(脚氣) in the medical texts were analyzed. Second, the process of the Beriberi theory development and its identification with Gak-Gi(脚氣), medical information on Beriberi, and the basis of various diseases that have been linked to Gak-Gi(脚氣) were studied. Results of the two directions were used to compare Gak-Gi(脚氣) and Beriberi. Results : Gak-Gi(脚氣) and Beriberi overlap in many aspects. However, unlike Beriberi which is understood as nutrient deficiency essentially, Gak-Gi(脚氣) can be caused by exterior pathogens such as wind toxin, while its different manifestations and treatment principles cannot be fully explained by nutrient deficiency. Conclusions : Gak-Gi(脚氣) could be understood as a type of syndrome in which causes and symptoms are connected, where symptoms start in the legs, moving upwards. It cannot be identified with Beriberi, which has been interpreted as a single disease.
