Six locations in the automated monitoring network at the Geum River Basin were selected forthis study. The water quality characteristics at two of the locations in the water quality monitoring network that were identical, or nearby, were examined, and their correlations were evaluated through statistical analysis. The results of the water quality analysis were converted to the water quality index and expressed in grades for comparison. For the data necessary for the study, public data from four years, from 2016-2019 were used and the evaluation parameters were water temperature, pH, EC, DO, TOC, TN, and TP. Results of the analysis showed that the water quality concentrations measured in the automated monitoring network and the water quality monitoring network differed in some measured values, but they tended to register variation in a specified ratio in most of the locations in the network. The analysis of the correlations of the parameters between the two monitoring networks found that water temperature, EC, and DO showed high correlations between the two monitoring networks. The TOC, TN, and TP showed high correlations, with a 0.7 or higher (correlation coefficient r), with the exception of some of the monitoring networks, although their correlations were lower than those of the basic parameters. The water quality index analysis showed that the water quality index values of the automated monitoring network and the water quality monitoring network were similar. The water quality index decreased and the pollution degree increased in the downstream direction, in both networks.

The purpose of this research was to develop a methodology to determine whether conjunctive surface water and groundwater management could significantly reduce deficits in a river basin with a relatively limited alluvial aquifer. The Geum River basin is one of major river basins in South Korea. The upper region of the Geum River basin is typical of many river basins in Korea where the shape of river basin is narrow with small alluvial aquifer depths from 10m to 20m and where most of the groundwater pumped comes quickly from the steamflow. The basin has two surface reservoirs, Daecheong and Yongdam. The most recent reservoir, Yongdam, provides water to a trans-basin diversion, and therefore reduces the water resources available in the Geum River basin. After the completion of Yongdam reservoir, the reduced water supply in the Geum basin resulted in increasing conflicts between downstream water needs and required instream flows, particularly during the low flow season. Historically, the operation of groundwater pumping has had limited control and is administered separately from surface water diversions. Given the limited size of the alluvial aquifer, it is apparent that groundwater pumping is essentially taking its water from the stream. Therefore, the operation of the surface water withdrawals and groundwater pumping must be considered together. The major component of the conjunction water management in this study is a goal-programmin g based optimization model that simultaneously considers surface water withdrawals, groundwater pumping and instream flow requirements. A 10-day time step is used in the model. The interactions between groundwater pumping and the stream are handled through the use of response and lag coefficients. The impacts of pumping on streamflow are considered for multiple time periods. The model is formulated as a linear goal-programming problem that is solved with the commercial LINGO optimization software package.
The new system evaluating the pollution of the water quality for the branches of geum river using the fuzzy integral was proposed in this study. In this paper, the five individual factors, such as BOD(biochemical oxygen demand), COD(chemical oxygen demand), SS(suspended solids), T-N(total nitrogen), and T-P(total phosphorus) are selected. The measurement of fuzzy integral was determined depending on the degree of how they affect the pollution of water quality. The real values for the five factors measured and obtained from the branches of the geum river was normalized to ranging from 0 to 1. Finally, using the fuzzy integral, the degree of the pollution for the branches of geum river was expressed as the real numerical number. As a result, it appears that this approach can be proposed as the new system evaluating the pollution of the water quality for the branches of the geum river.
This study reports the serial use of a 3-D hydrodynamic model, EFDC-Hydro and a dynamic water quality model WASP7.2 that are maintained by USEPA. The 48 km section of the Geum River downstream between Daechung Dam and Gongju was selected as a sample study site. Topographical information was used to accurately represent morphology of the study site and boundary conditions were derived from governmental databases including WAMIS by Ministry of Land and Ocean and WEIS by Ministry of Environment. EFDC-Hydro was successfully calibrated for observed water level and WASP was calibrated using monthly observed water quality data obtained from the above sources. It was found that the current water quality target of BOD for the Geum River-H point could not be met on monthly basis though every other tributary of the area would meet its own water quality target as assigned in Korean TMDL. This study proposed the new target BOD water quality for the Gabcheon and Mihocheon as 4.3 and 3.6 mg/l, respectively so that the Geum River-H point can meet the target. When Sejong City is constructed, it is estimated that effluent discharge limit of BOD must be less than 4.5 mg/l to meet water quality of the point. This study shows that it is possible to carry out more precise modeling considering both water movement and water kinetics by using EFDC and WASP simultaneously.

This study aims to find out critical areas of a soil loss and propose feasible measures to reduce the water quality deterioration by a soil lose. As a study area, the So-ok stream catchment locating at the upper area of Daecheong Reservoir is selected and intensive field observation was carried out. RUSLE model is applied to assess the impact of the pollution migration by a soil ross from the critical areas during storms on the water quality of Chusori embayment. As results, total amount of the soil ross assessed against to the critical area on which major type of land use is a orchard for fruits is 54.3 ton/ha/yr and that of an abandoned mine site is about 200 ton/ha/year. In particular as effective measures, a plantation of an appropriate species of fruit trees and an application of ecologic restoration schemes are proposed against to the orchard and the abandoned mine site, respectively.
This study was to analyze fish composition and ecological indicator characteristics from eight sampling sites of Geum River, October 2007. Total number of family and species sampled were 9 and 40. The most dominant family was Cyprinidae (27 species, 85%), and then followed by Cobitidae, Odomtobutidae, and Gobiidae. Constancy values of Zacco platypus and Zacco temminckii were 1.00 and 0.30, respectively, and the relative abundance of Acheilognathus koreensis and Pseudogobio esocinus were greater than 5% of the total. The number of Korean endemic species sampled in this Geum River study was 7 family 19 species, which is 47.5% of total 40 species, and endangered species of Pseudopungtungia nigra and Gobiobotia brevibarba were only 0.5% of the total and these species were only distributed within the upstream regions. Exotic species, Micropterus salmoides, which is known as large-mouth bass, were observed in two sites of G3 and G7. Analytical results of fish community showed that community dominance index was 0.19, which is low, and the species evenness index (0.74), diversity index (2.03), and richness index (3.00) appeared high. These results indicate that structure of fish community is stable in the Geum River. According to various guilds analysis, the relative abundance of tolerant and omnivores at all sites were 40% and 47% of the total, respectively. This monitoring data may contribute changes of fish fauna and compositions in relation to habitat modifications and chemical water quality degradations in the future.

This study tries to analyze topographic distribution and characteristics of as well as formative age and incision rate of fluvial terraces in Danyang River on western side and Geum River on eastern side of the northern Sobaek Mountains and to estimate geomorphic development during the late Quaternary in the mountains regarded as one of the uplift axes in the Korean Peninsula. OSL age dating shows that the fluvial terrace I with an altitude above riverbed of approximately 7~13 m in Danyang River has a formative age of approximately 18 ka (MIS 2) and incision rate in the river is approximately 0.156~0.194 m/ka based on the age. Altitudes above riverbed of the fluvial terrace I in Geum River range from approximately 7 to 14 m and the terrace is thought to be older than 70 ka based on age result from aeolian sediments above the terrace deposits, suggestive of an incision rate less than approximately 0.10 m/ka. These results indicate lower uplift rate in the northern Sobaek Mountains than in the Taebaek Mountains. Moreover, it can be suggested that the northern Sobaek Mountains has experienced asymmetric uplift during the late Quaternary, because the river on western side of the northern Sobaek Mountains shows greater uplift rate than the eastern side river does. Low incision rate in Geum River can be attributed to low altitude of the river basin with little difference in altitude from the base level as well as to gentle river slope due to influence of Nakdong River.

Geum River Estuary Barrage is very important for the irrigation, municipal and industrial uses in the cities of Gunsan, Iksan and Jeonju. The Geum River Control Office has a flood forecasting system; however, the current system does not consider the backwater effects. As a result, it is very difficult to give correct flood information, and it is difficult to accurately assess the water resource supply and saltwater invasion into freshwater, as frequently occurs due to over-discharge during floods. In this study, we investigate the flood forecasting system for the Geum River reach influenced by the estuary barrage. The current system cannot consider the backwater effect because the estuary barrage blocks the end of the river. We calculated the discharge from the tide lock and evaluated the inside water level of the estuary barrage during floods. The results show that the calculation agrees well with the observed data at the river stage stations in the Geum River. The results also show that this program is a reasonable substitute for the current system.

Flash flood is a dangerous weather phenomenon, affecting humans and the economy. The identification, forecast of the changing trend and its characteristics are increasingly concerned. In the world, there have many methods for determining the characteristics of flash floods, in which flash flood guidance (FFG) is a fast, effective and widely used method. The main source of flash floods is short-term rainfall. In this study, we used the data of cross-sectional measurement at the tributaries and the hourly rain data from the automatic rainfall measurement stations in the Geum river basin. Besides, we use a combination of the flash flood guidance and the best fit distribution function to estimate the repeatability of flash floods for head-water catchments in Geum river basin. In which, FFG determines the threshold of rainfall for flash floods. The study has determined the best hourly rainfall distribution function for the Geum river basin and estimated the maximum rainfall of 1hr according to the return periods.
The Water Quality Analysis Simulation Program 5 (WASP5) and HEC-2 models have been coupled and applied to find the possibility of simulation of long-term river water quality variation. The EUTR05 as a simulator of water quality simulation in WASPS model was used to simulate the water quality variables in the downstream of Geum-River from Daechung multi-purpose dam during the dry period. The water quality and flow rate conditions have been measured at the stage measurement stations located in the downstream of Geum-River from Daechung dam in December, 1998 and January and March, 1999. The water quality simulation model was calibrated with January data of 1999, and verified with December data of 1998 and March data of 1999. The trend of longitudinal variation of water quality variables simulated by model is consistent with that of measured water quality constituents except chlorophyll-a, $BOD_5,\;NH_3-N\;and\;PO_4-P$ simulated with March data of 1999. Furthennore, the chlorophyll a concentration in the mainstream of Geum-River was simulated by changing the concentrations of $PO_4-P$ and/or $NH_4-N$ flowing into the mainstream of Geum-River from Gabcheon and Mihocheon. The variation of chlorophyll a concentration in the mainstream was almost ignorable except only when $NH_3-N\;and\;PO_4-P$ concentrations decreased by 70% flow into the mainstream from Gabcheon and Mihocheon.
