Background : Complementary and alternative medicine has bee used to cardiovascular diseases. In recent years, many hospitals have tried to integrate complementary and alternative medicine(CAM) with conventional medical approaches for patients with chronic diseases. Recently, the prevalence of the use of traditional Korean medicine(TKM) among patients with chronic diseases, expecially, hemiplegia patients after cerebrovascular accident is increasing in Korea. To date, however, there were only few studies addressing the patients' attitudes, and utilization of TKM, compared to the well-documented escalating use of TKM among consumers in Korea. Objectives : The objective of this study was to analyze the prevalence of TKM use among hemiplegia patients after cerebrovascular accident and to determine what factors affect to use CAM among the patients. The study also aims to provide information on TKM and assist therapy selection among various CAM therapies for hemiplegia patients after cerebrovascular accident within health care system in which both practitioners of TKM and practitioners of modern Western medicine coexisted. Methods : The design of the study was descriptive cross-sectional, and data were collected using a 32-items questionnaire. The subjects were one hundred fifty nine patients with chronic diseases who visited or admitted to health care facilities in a hospital in Seoul Metropolitan city, Korea. Data were analyzed using 'SPSS Statistics 18.0 Network Version(on release 18.0.1 of PASW Statistics)' program. Various statistical methods were used to obtain a profile for participants and the therapies most frequently used by hemiplegia patients of TKM. Logistic regression analysis was employed in order to determine the predicting variables of TKM use. Results : The prevalence of the use of TKM was 51.6%. The most common TKM therapies used by the patients included acupuncture(93.2%), herbal medicine(64.8%), and cupping(37.5%). Results of logistic regression analysis revealed that the variables significantly related with TKM use were gender, marital status, job, No. of visiting health care facilities/week. Conclusions : This study shows that the use of TKM among the hemiplegia patients is relatively high in Korea, this topic should be taken into account in the development of a holistic approach for patients with chronic diseases and an efficient chronic disease management system in Korea.

이 연구목적은 일부 지역 재가 노인을 대상으로 보완대체요법 이용행태와 그 영향요인을 구명하는데 있다. 2단계 집락추출로 선정된 대구광역시와 경상남도의 2개 시 군의 노인복지시설(9개)을 이용한 60세 이상 노인 233명을 대상으로 보완대체요법 이용현황, 보완대체요법 인지 여부, 만성질환유형에 따른 이용실태 등을 파악하기 위해 교차분석 및 로지스틱 회귀분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과 조사대상 노인의 70.4%(164명)가 지난 1년간 보완대체요법 이용 경험이 있었다. CAM 종류별로 48.8%(64명)~60.7%(88명)의 노인들이 보건의료 전문가와의 상담 없이 이용하고 있었다. 보완대체요법을 인지하고 있는 경우의 이용 경험은 2 이상 높았으며, 이환된 만성질환 수가 많은 경우의 이용경험은 수기요법 5.85(95% CI 1.97-17.34), 영양요법 2.92(95% CI 1.07-7.97), 약물요법 2.92(95% CI 1.04-8.17)로 높았으며, 만성질환 중 당뇨병을 진단받은 경우의 영양요법 이용 경험은 3.76(95% CI 1.49-9.47) 높았다. 노인 만성질환관리를 위해서는 보완대체요법에 대한 명확하고 체계적인 분류, 효과 및 안전성에 대한 객관적 검증과 함께 노인들의 건강상태를 고려한 전문가 및 의료인의 보완대체요법 이용 중재가 필요하다.

The traumatic removal of the mandibular third molar may promote post chirurgic consequences such as orofacial pain and limited mandibular movements. The aim of this case report is to describe the use of an anterior bite plane and complementary therapies (low level laser therapy and acupuncture) to treat the muscular dysfunction and the painful symptoms. A 33 year-old male patient who had a severe malocclusion and signs and symptoms of temporomandibular dysfunction was submitted to an initial clinical examination: electromyography of the masticatory muscles and IRM of the temporomandibular joint. After treatments, the results showed reduced pain symptoms and an increase of the mandibular movements and adequated electromiographic activities. The authors concluded that the combination therapies may be used as an alternative treatment because it satisfied the functional requirements of the patient and provided an asymptomatic clinical condition.

Objectives : Retroperitoneal liposarcoma (RPS) is a rare solid tumor and has a high recurrence rate after surgery. New complementary and alternative medicine is required to manage symptoms of RPS and side effects of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The purpose of this case report is to report two cases of reduction of side effects of surgery and radiation therapy in RPS treated with Wheel Balanced Therapy (WBT) which is a traditional Korean medicine treatment program for patients with cancer. Methods : Two patients with RPS were treated with WBT. Each of patients received personalized WBT schedule including acupuncture. The changes in clinical and laboratory findings were evaluated. Results : The symptoms of patients were improved after about 2 weeks hospitalization. Conclusions : This case report suggests that WBT has a potential to treat side effects of surgery and radiation therapy in patients with RPS. Further rigorous studies are necessary to investigate the therapeutic effects of WBT on RPS.

Purpose: This study was done to explore the process of accepting CATs among nurses who experienced CATs in Korea. Methods: Grounded theory methodology was utilized. Data were collected from 10 nurses during individual in-depth interviews. Theoretical sampling was used until the data reached saturation. Data were analyzed using the constant comparative analysis method. Results: The core category emerged as "resolving the doubt and integrating" explaining the process of accepting CATs. The nurses engaged in three stages: need awareness, look for solution and integration. Causal conditions were interest as a nursing intervention and orthodox medical limitations. Context was lack of basis for application and increase in social interest. Strategies were new knowledge acquisition, having a strong will, combined with existing knowledge, and individualized intervention. Intervening conditions were others' eye, exhaustion for nurses and physical environment. Consequences were expanding of the nursing role and improved nurse satisfaction. Conclusion: The results of the study should facilitate application of CATs in nursing practice. To help nurses who are interested in CATs, there is a need for education programs, and further research on CATs.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate oriental medical research on dysmenorrhea published within 10 years to analyze the trends of study on dysmenorrhea at home and abroad for progress in future clinical research. Methods & Results: Publication research was carried out on several online database systems using keywords like 'dysmenorrhea', 'traditional medicine', 'herb', 'acupuncture', 'CAM', 'complementary and alternative medicine', 'moxibustion' within 10 years(2002-2012). 32 Korean journal articles and 29 oversea journal articles were selected. Conclusions: This study concludes that more well-designed randomized-controlled studies and diverse approaches are necessary to make accumulation of evidence on oriental medical therapy of dysmenorrhea.

본 연구는 명상요법이 스트레스 해소와 삶의 질에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 실시하였다. 실험군은 광주·전남에 있는 소주천 명상 회원 85명을 대상으로 하였으며, 대조군은 일반회사원, 미용학원 학생 등 48명을 대상으로 설문조사로 하였다. 두 집단 간 연구변인의 차이의 통계는 일원분산분석을 실시하였다. 분석결과 스트레스의 경우 유의한 차이를 보였으며, 삶의 질 향상 역시 F검정결과 유의한 차이가 나타났다. 따라서 명상수련자의 경우 대부분이 명상요법이 스트레스 해소 및 삶의 질 향상에 긍정적으로 작용한다고 조사되었다. 이와 같은 연구 결과로 볼 때 소주천 명상요법은 스트레스 해소 및 삶의 질에 효과적임을 알 수 있었으며, 심리적 안정에 명상요법의 참고 자료를 제공함에 충분하다고 할 수 있을 것이다.
