  • Physical properties and textural parameters of thirty-five piston tore samples recovered from the southeastern coast of Korea (Korea Strait), were investigated using the autopycnometer. The physical properties (porosity, water content, wet bulk density, dry bulk density, gram density, and void ratio) were measured at rather uniform intervals along each core. Sediment texture (grain size, sand, silt, and clay contents) was also measured at the same subbottom depth. The measured and calculated results are; mean grain size $0.57\~8.09\phi(average:3.67\phi)$, porosity $26\~81\%\;(average:\;55\%)$, water content $16.7\~61.4\%(average:\;31.6\%)$, wet bulk density $1.37\~2.18g/cm^3\;(average:\;1.85g/cm^3)$, dry bulk density $2.55\~3.11g/cm^3\;(average:\;2.35g/cm^3)$, grain density $2.40\~3.10g/cm^3\;(average:\;2.85g/cm^3)$, and void ratio $0.56\~2.54$ (average: 0.94). The sediment texture generally coincides well with the bathymetry indicating the influence of Pleistocene-Holocene sea level changes. Also the contours of physical properties are closely related to the sediment texture. Fluctuation of physical properties are similar to the textural variation. It seems that sediment texture is a significant factor in determining physical property in this study area.

  • 3D contents could cause unique 3D visual fatigue. Screen disparity, image blurring, and crosstalk are known to be the three major factors responsible for the fatigue. Among these, screen disparity and image blurring are content factors, that is, one can directly manipulate contents themselves to handle visual fatigue caused by these two factors. On the other hand, because crosstalk is closely tied to physical characteristics of 3D display, it is difficult or even impossible to reduce crosstalk-driven visual fatigue unless one replaces 3D display itself (for example, from active to passive display). However, the effects of crosstalk on 3D visual fatigue depends on visual stimulus features (that is, contents), and thus it is possible to manipulate stimulus features in order to handle visual fatigue caused by crosstalk. Hence, this research tested the effects of visual stimulus features on crosstalk (which then causes 3D visual fatigue). Using relative depth discrimination task, we tested the effects of stimulus-background contrast, background texture density, and screen disparity on the degree of perceived crosstalk. The results showed that crosstalk decreases with presence of background texture and with less degree of screen disparity.

  • This study was performed as an effort to reduce soil loss by investigating the phase of water flow according to soil texture and rainfall pattern and by determining the canopy cover subfactor in the RUSLE (revised universal soil loss equation). Red pepper was planted at the 15% sloped lysimeter of $2m{\times}5m{\times}0.5m$ ($width{\times}length{\times}depth$) with three different textured soils (loam, clay loam and sandy loam) and the relationship between amount and intensity of rainfall; soil loss and the amount of runoff; and amount of rainfall and runoff at different soil texture were measured at the experiment station of the National Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology (NIAST) during May to October of 2005. The amount of runoff increased with increasing amount of rainfall, showing difference in the relative increase rate of runoff at different soil texture. The increase rate of runoff with unit increase of rainfall for the lysimeter with red pepper was 0.44, 0.41 and 0.13 for loam, clayey loam and sandy loam, respectively. The minimum amount of rainfall for runoff was 23.53 mm for sandy loam, 10.35 mm for loam and 5.46 mm for clayey loam, respectively. The canopy cover subfactors of red pepper were 0.425, 0.459, and 0.478 for sandy loam, loam and clayey loam, respectively.

  • The lysimeter experiment was conducted to investigate the temporal changes of irrigation requirement, soil water percolation and rice root distribution during rice growing period under different soil texture that were sandy loam, clay loam and clay paddy soil in 1999 and 2000. The irrigation requirement in the first year was 3,306 l/$m^2$ in clay loam, 2,650 l/$m^2$ in sandy loam and 2,002 l/$m^2$ in clay soil. However, the highest irrigation requirement was 5,281 l/$m^2$ in sandy loam and the next was 4,984 l/$m^2$ in clay loam and 3,968 l/$m^2$ in clay soil in the second year, Soil water percolation in the first year was 2,141 l/$m^2$ in clay loam, 1,228 l/$m^2$ in Sandy loam and 862 l/$m^2$ in clay soil. However, in the second year, the highest water percolation of 4,448 l/$m^2$ was measured in sandy loam, and was followed by 3,833 l/$m^2$ in clay loam and 2,925 l/$m^2$ in clay soil. Distribution ratio of rice roots measured in 0-10cm of soil depth was 56.0% in sandy loam, 61.4% in clay loam and 72.1% in clay soil, respectively. It was interpreted that the greater water percolation measured in the second year was caused mainly by the large amount of rice root growth. Therefore, it was concluded that the soil water percolation in rice paddy soil was affected greatly not only by soil texture but also the growth of rice root.

  • The present study examines similarity of behavior between an overtopping wave generated by a plunging wave and a dam-break flow through hydraulic model tests. The dam-break flow has been employed to estimate the overtopping effect on the basis of the dam-break flow's behavior similar to the overtopping. In this study, the overtopping velocity was measured by a modified image technique using bubble and bubble texture images called bubble image velocitmetry. From the measurements, the vertical profiles of horizontal overtopping velocity at cross-sections along the deck were presented and discussed. Maximum velocity and depth-averaged velocity at each cross-section were compared with an analytical solution solving the dam-break flow, Ritter's solution. The initial water depth of importance for the solution was determined from the tested wave condition and the overtopping measurements. The comparison shows that the solution with the initial water depth estimated using the front velocity of the overtopping wave is in good agreements with the measurements.

  • In Korea, many paddy fields in mountainous area have been abandoned because of their low accessibility and rice price and the abandoned paddy terraces have changed into natural lentic wetlands. To understand the relationship between characteristics of environmental conditions and early development of plant community in abandoned paddy terraces, we investigated at four well-maintained abandoned paddy terraces in 3 different climatic zones in Korea. Soil texture of abandoned paddy terraces was mostly kinds of loam and electric conductivity of soil was also similar among abandoned paddy terraces. On the other hand, contents of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, and calcium in soil were relatively low and significantly different among abandoned paddy terraces. Water depth was different within sites and inter-sites. Although environmental conditions including climate, soil condition and water depth were different among abandoned paddy terraces, the compositions of plant communities were relatively similar in all abandoned paddy terraces. 55 dominant taxa out of 141 recorded species were commonly recorded over sites and they were mostly perennial obligate wetland plants and facultative wetland plants. 8 taxa out of 55 dominant taxa occurred at all abandoned paddy terraces with over 10% coverage. Several site-specific species occurred at site, which have some area with deep water level. This result indicates that early development of plant community in abandoned paddy terraces of similar water regime is similar in the entire area of Korea even though environmental conditions such as climate, biogeographic history and soil are different.

  • In this paper, we propose the 3D shape reconstruction method that combine the mosaic method and the active stereo matching using the laser beam. The active stereo matching method detects the position information of the irradiated laser beam on object by analyzing the color and brightness variation of left and right image, and acquires the depth information in epipolar line. The mosaic method extracts feature point of image by using harris comer detection and matches the same keypoint between the sequence of images using the keypoint descriptor index method and infers correlation between the sequence of images. The depth information of the sequence image was calculated by the active stereo matching and the mosaic method. The merged depth information was reconstructed to the 3D shape information by wrapping and blending with image color and texture. The proposed reconstruction method could acquire strong the 3D distance information, and overcome constraint of place and distance etc, by using laser slit beam and stereo camera.

  • In this paper, we proposed a face tracking algorithm for a viewpoint adaptive multi-view synthesis system. The original scene captured by a depth camera contains a texture image and 8 bit gray-scale depth map. From this original image, multi-view images can be synthesized which correspond to viewer's position by using geometrical transformation such as a rotation and a translation. The proposed face tracking technique gives a motion parallax cue by different viewpoints and view angles. In the proposed algorithm, tracking of viewer's dominant face initially established from camera by using statistical characteristics of face colors and deformable templates is done. As a result, we can provide motion parallax cue by detecting viewer's dominant face area and tracking it even under a heterogeneous background and can successfully display the synthesized sequences.

  • In this paper, we propose a method for filling out the occlusions in generating multi-view images from one source image and its ground-truth depth image. The method is based on image inpainting and layered interpolation. The source image is first divided into several layers using depth information. The occlusions are interpolated separately in every layered image using the image inpainting algorithm. Finally, the interpolated layered images are combined to obtain different viewpoint images. Interpolating occlusions with depth-correlated texture information that is contained to each layer makes it possible to obtain more detailed and accurate results than previous methods. The effectiveness of the proposed method is shown through experimental results.

  • Detail management standard on soil conditions in 'Kyoho' grapes were not yet made. Therefore, this study was carried out to investigate the optimum soil environmental conditions on production of high fruit quality in 'Kyoho' grapes. We established using correlation between fruit quality and soil condition. These results were used to develop soil management guideline with promoting efficiency and minuteness in grape vineyard. Soil conditions were analyzed at total 80 vineyards in major grape producing areas such as Ansung, and Cheonan (40 orchards an area). The soil environmental factors affected fruit weight were soil pH of 36.6%, cultivation layer depth of 23.3%, and cation of 17.8%. The soil condition factors affected sugar content were soil hardness of 24.4%, cation of 24.1% and organic matter content of 22.1%. Cultivation layer depth, soil texture, and phosphate content were low as relative contribution. Coloring was involved with organic matter content, CEC (cation exchange capacity), and saturated hydraulic conductivity. while soil pH, cultivation layer depth, and phosphate content showed low contribution. Finally, relative contribution on fruit quality related with sugar content, fruit weight, and coloring were soil hardness of 28.0%, organic matter content of 25.0%, soil pH of 12.9%.
