  • We have designed the system that measure one channel ECG by two electrode and extract real-time EDR with more related resipiration and comportable to subject by using conductive textile. On the assumption that relation between RL electrode and potential measurement electrode is coupled with RC connected model, we designed RL drive output to feedback two electrode for reduction of common mode signal. The conductive textile which was used for two ECG electrode was offered more comfort during night sleep in bed than any other method using attachments. In the method of single-lead EDR, R wave point or QRS interval area could be used for EDR estimation in traditional method, it is, so to speak, the amplitude modulation(AM) method for EDR. Alternatively, R-R interval could be used for frequency modulation(FM) method based on Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia(RSA). For evaluation of performance on AM EDR and FM EDR from 14 subject, ECG lead III was measured. Each EDR was compared with both temperature around nose(direct measurement of respiration) and respiration signal from thoracic belt(indirect measurement of respiration) on mean squared error(MSE), cross correlation(Xcorr), and Coherence. The upsampling interpolation technique of multirate signal processing is applied to interpolating data instead of cubic spline interpolation. As a result, we showed the real-time EDR extraction processing to be implemented at micro-controller.

  • Treatment of textile wastewater by the electrocoagulation (EC) process is being investigated by this experimental study. The objective of this experiment is to observe the efficiency of the EC process in removing chemical oxygen demand (COD) and turbidity. In this experiment an iron electrode is used in the EC process, and different working parameters such as pH, current density and operating time were studied in an attempt to achieve a higher removal capacity. The results show that the maximum COD removal occurred at neutral pH at operating time 30 min. COD and turbidity removal reaches at maximum, with optimum consumption of electrodes, between current density 85-95 $A/m^2$, and only trace amounts of metals were determined in the EC treated effluent.

  • As assessment of quantitative energy expenditure for effective exercise is becoming more important, many researches about the monitoring system for exercise status or result have been actively carried out. In this case, however, bicycle riders feel restrained and uncomfortable because the riders should wear a belt-type electrocardiograph or a watch-type accelerometer or GPS system during the assessment of bicycle exercise. In this study, therefore, an electrocardiograph based on textile electrode was developed for measuring ECG and calculating heart rate from the bicycle rider without feeling restraint, and smartphone application was also developed for monitoring the heart rate.

  • Significance verification of electric fabric compared with existing electrode is very useful for the wearable and ubiquitous healthcare. In this paper, we verified the significance between Ag/AgCl electrode and electric fabric in dry-normal condition through heart rate variability analysis. We can find 98 % or more similarity about low frequency and high frequency which is important parameter for the heart rate variability analysis between two different electrodes in experiment. From this result, we confirmed that the power spectral density of low frequency, high frequency component from the electric fabric has high similarity compared with the result of heart rate variability from Ag/AgCl electrode in dry-normal condition.

  • This study presents and develops a textile type touch sensor structural design that is easy to implement. First, the design of the touch sensor circuit finds the size of the switch with the easiest finger contact and selects a structure with a long circuit with the lowest resistance value. An experiment is performed on a change in an electrostatic capacitance value that accompanies the distance on the electrode and the magnitude of the electrode area of the structure; however, the structure having the distance on the electrode and the large electrode area shows the best resistance change. The laundry assessment was conducted three times at a time and ten times at a time with an average standard deviation less than one ohm, with little change in resistance. Consequently, there were no problems with durability and performance for laundry. Finally, in the bending evaluation, the difference in resistance can be seen between 1-2 ohms and was developed as a smart wearable in the future; in addition, there was no problem as a difference in resistance can be seen between 1 and 2 ohms.

  • This study developed a vest prototype capable of monitoring body temperature using textile electrodes to prevent the sudden death of babies as well as to determine the quality of developed products by evaluating usability with commercial products. Based on the results of the 7th Size Korea Project, a basic pattern for a vest prototype was drafted by applying the average size of two-year-old Korean babies. Two prototypes were the detachable (VEST I) and integrated textile electrodes vest type (VEST II), which followed the same design. The materials were 100% cotton single jersey (SJ) and double jersey (DJ). Six experts evaluated the usability of the developed vests (VEST I & VEST II) and commercial product (VEST M). The single-layer woven textile electrode appeared to have a slightly higher conductivity than the double-layer one. There was no statistical difference in the body temperature sensing function between VEST I and VEST II. Finally, the superiority of the VEST I was verified through a comparison with commercial products (VEST M). The usability test suggested that a wearable smart clothing system of the integrated conductive textile could be further commercialized for bio-monitor applications in Ubiquitous-health care.

  • Recently, according to change of lifestyle and increase of concerning in health, needs of the smart clothing based on the vital sign monitoring have increased. Along with this trend, smart clothing for ECG monitoring has been studied various way as textile electrode, clothing design and so on. Smart clothing for ECG monitoring can become a comfortable system which enables continuous vital sign monitoring in daily use. But, smart clothing for ECG monitoring has a weakness on artifact during motion. One of the motion artifact caused by shifting of the electrode position was affected skin change by motion. The aim of this study was to suggest electrode locations for clothing of ECG monitoring to reduce of motion artifacts. Therefore, change of skin surface during the movement were measured and analyzed in order to find location to minimize motion artifacts in ECG monitoring clothing by 3D motion capture. For the experiment, the subjects consisted of 5 males and 5 females in their 20' with average physique. As a result, the optimal location for ECG monitoring was deducted under the bust line and scapula which have least motion artifact. These locations were abstracted to be least affected by movement in this research.

  • Hierarchically porous carbon materials with high nitrogen functionalities are extensively studied as high-performance supercapacitor electrode materials. In this study, nitrogen-doped porous carbon textile (N-PCT) with hierarchical pore structures is prepared as an electrode material for supercapacitors from a waste cotton T-shirt (WCT). Porous carbon textile (PCT) is first prepared from WCT by two-step heat treatment of stabilization and carbonization. The PCT is then nitrogen-doped with urea at various concentrations. The obtained N-PCT is found to have multi-modal pore structures with a high specific surface area of 1,299 m2 g-1 and large total pore volume of 1.01 cm3 g-1. The N-PCT-based electrode shows excellent electrochemical performance in a 3-electrode system, such as a specific capacitance of 235 F g-1 at 1 A g-1, excellent cycling stability of 100 % at 5 A g-1 after 1,000 cycles, and a power density of 2,500 W kg-1 at an energy density of 3.593 Wh kg-1. Thus, the prepared N-PCT can be used as an electrode material for supercapacitors.

  • Organic photovoltaic cells (OPV) have been extensively studied due to their unique properties such as flexibility, light-weight, easy processability, cost-effectiveness, and being environmental friendly. These advantages make them an attractive candidate for application in various novel fields and promising development with new features. Photovoltaic cell-integrated textiles have greatly attractive features as a power source for the smart textile solutions, and OPV is most ideal form factor due to advantage of flexibility. In this study, we develop a textile-based OPV through various experimental methods and we suggest the direction for the design of the photovoltaic textile. We used a textile electrode and tried to various layouts for textile-based OPV. Finally, we determined the contact area by using Hertzian theory for the calculation of power conversion efficiency (PCE). Based on the results of calculation, the short circuit current density, Isc, was $13.11mA/cm^2$ under AM 1.5condition and the PCE was around 2.5%.

  • For increasing the yield stress of ER fluids, the compressing ER electrode was developed and the compressing electrorheological (ER) behavior of anhydrous ER fluids in silicone oil of phosphorous ester cellulose powder was investigated. Under constant electric field, not only the current density but also the yield stress of anhydrous ER fluids were studied as varying the compressing length of ER electrode distance. From the experimental results the compressing of ER electrode had a large influence to the ER properties of anhydrous ER fluids. The current density was proportional to the compressing length of ER electrode under constant electric field and volume fraction also tile compressing yield stress was proportional to the volume fraction of dispersed particles under constant electric field and compressing length. When the ER electrode was compressed with 150mm after charging the electric field, 4 kV, tile yield stress of phosphoric ester cellulose ER fluids increased to thirteen times comparing with the yield stress measured at normal electrode.
