Recently, there have been many issues related to text recognition using Tesseract. One of these issues is that the text recognition accuracy is significantly lower for smaller fonts. Tesseract extracts text by creating an outline with direction in the image. By searching the Tesseract database, template matching with characters with similar feature points is used to select the character with the lowest error. Because of the poor text extraction, the recognition accuracy is lowerd. In this paper, we compared text recognition accuracy after applying various super-resolution methods to smaller text images and experimented with how the recognition accuracy varies for various image size. In order to recognize small Korean text images, we have used super-resolution algorithms based on deep learning models such as SRCNN, ESRCNN, DSRCNN, and DCSCN. The dataset for training and testing consisted of Korean-based scanned images. The images was resized from 0.5 times to 0.8 times with 12pt font size. The experiment was performed on x0.5 resized images, and the experimental result showed that DCSCN super-resolution is the most efficient method to reduce precision error rate by 7.8%, and reduce the recall error rate by 8.4%. The experimental results have demonstrated that the accuracy of text recognition for smaller Korean fonts can be improved by adding super-resolution methods to the OCR preprocessing module.

Innovation and rapid increased functionality in user friendly smartphones has encouraged shutterbugs to have picturesque image macros while in work environment or during travel. Formal signboards are placed with marketing objectives and are enriched with text for attracting people. Extracting and recognition of the text from natural images is an emerging research issue and needs consideration. When compared to conventional optical character recognition (OCR), the complex background, implicit noise, lighting, and orientation of these scenic text photos make this problem more difficult. Arabic language text scene extraction and recognition adds a number of complications and difficulties. The method described in this paper uses a two-phase methodology to extract Arabic text and word boundaries awareness from scenic images with varying text orientations. The first stage uses a convolution autoencoder, and the second uses Arabic Character Segmentation (ACS), which is followed by traditional two-layer neural networks for recognition. This study presents the way that how can an Arabic training and synthetic dataset be created for exemplify the superimposed text in different scene images. For this purpose a dataset of size 10K of cropped images has been created in the detection phase wherein Arabic text was found and 127k Arabic character dataset for the recognition phase. The phase-1 labels were generated from an Arabic corpus of quotes and sentences, which consists of 15kquotes and sentences. This study ensures that Arabic Word Awareness Region Detection (AWARD) approach with high flexibility in identifying complex Arabic text scene images, such as texts that are arbitrarily oriented, curved, or deformed, is used to detect these texts. Our research after experimentations shows that the system has a 91.8% word segmentation accuracy and a 94.2% character recognition accuracy. We believe in the future that the researchers will excel in the field of image processing while treating text images to improve or reduce noise by processing scene images in any language by enhancing the functionality of VGG-16 based model using Neural Networks.

Text detection has been a popular research topic in the field of computer vision. It is difficult for prevalent text detection algorithms to avoid the dependence on datasets. To overcome this problem, we proposed a novel unsupervised text detection algorithm inspired by bootstrap learning. Firstly, the text candidate in a novel form of superpixel is proposed to improve the text recall rate by image segmentation. Secondly, we propose a unique text sample selection model (TSSM) to extract text samples from the current image and eliminate database dependency. Specifically, to improve the precision of samples, we combine maximally stable extremal regions (MSERs) and the saliency map to generate sample reference maps with a double threshold scheme. Finally, a multiple kernel boosting method is developed to generate a strong text classifier by combining multiple single kernel SVMs based on the samples selected from TSSM. Experimental results on standard datasets demonstrate that our text detection method is robust to complex backgrounds and multilingual text and shows stable performance on different standard datasets.
The system for recognizing text in natural scenes has been applied in various industries. However, due to the change in brightness that occurs in nature such as light reflection and shadow, the text recognition performance significantly decreases. To solve this problem, we propose an adversarial shadow generation and training algorithm that is robust to shadow changes. The adversarial shadow generation and training algorithm divides the entire image into a total of 9 grids, and adjusts the brightness with 4 trainable parameters for each grid. Finally, training is conducted in a adversarial relationship between the text recognition model and the shaded image generator. As the training progresses, more and more difficult shaded grid combinations occur. When training with this curriculum-learning attitude, we not only showed a performance improvement of more than 3% in the ICDAR2015 public benchmark dataset, but also confirmed that the performance improved when applied to our's android application text recognition dataset.

Handwritten text recognition is one of the active research areas nowadays. The progress in this field differs in every language. For example, the progress in Arabic handwritten text recognition is still insignificant and needs more attentions and efforts. One of the most important fields in this is Arabic handwritten manuscript text recognition which focuses in extracting text from historical manuscripts. For eons, ancients used manuscripts to write everything. Nowadays, there are millions of manuscripts all around the world. There are two main challenges in dealing with these manuscripts. The first one is that they are at the risk of damage since they are written in primitive materials, the second challenge is due to the difference in writing styles, hence most people are unable to read these manuscripts easily. Therefore, we discuss in this study different papers that are related to this important research field.
This paper deals with text-prompt speaker recognition based on dynamic time warping (DTW). The Genetic Algorithm was applied to the creation of reference patterns for suitable reflection of the speaker characteristics, one of the most important determinants in the fields of speaker recognition. In order to overcome the weakness of text-dependent and text-independent speaker recognition, the text-prompt type was suggested. Performed speaker identification and verification in close and open set respectively, hence the Genetic algorithm-based reference patterns had been proven to have better performance in both recognition rate and speed than that of conventional reference patterns.

Character recognition system consists of four step; text localization, text segmentation, character segmentation, and recognition. The character segmentation is very important and difficult because of noise, illumination, and so on. For high recognition rates of the system, it is necessary to take good performance of character segmentation algorithm. Many algorithms for character segmentation have been developed up to now, and many people have been recently making researches in segmentation of touching or overlapping character. Most of algorithms cannot apply to the text regions of management number marked on the slab in steel image, because the text regions are irregular such as touching character by strong illumination and by trouble of nozzle in marking machine, and loss of character. It is difficult to gain high success rate in various cases. This paper describes a new algorithm of character segmentation to recognize slab management number marked on the slab in the steel image. It is very important that pre-processing step is to convert gray image to binary image without loss of character and touching character. In this binary image, non-touching characters are simply separated by using vertical projection profile. For separating touching characters, after we use combined profile to find candidate points of boundary, decide real character boundary by using method based on recognition. In recognition step, we remove noise of character images, then recognize respective character images. In this paper, the proposed algorithm is effective for character segmentation and recognition of various text regions on the slab in steel image.

Scene text recognition has important application value and attracted the interest of plenty of researchers. At present, many methods have achieved good results, but most of the existing approaches attempt to improve the performance of scene text recognition from the image level. They have a good effect on reading regular scene texts. However, there are still many obstacles to recognizing text on low-quality images such as curved, occlusion, and blur. This exacerbates the difficulty of feature extraction because the image quality is uneven. In addition, the results of model testing are highly dependent on training data, so there is still room for improvement in scene text recognition methods. In this work, we present a natural scene text recognizer to improve the recognition performance from the feature level, which contains feature representation and feature enhancement. In terms of feature representation, we propose an efficient feature extractor combined with Representative Batch Normalization and ResNet. It reduces the dependence of the model on training data and improves the feature representation ability of different instances. In terms of feature enhancement, we use a feature enhancement network to expand the receptive field of feature maps, so that feature maps contain rich feature information. Enhanced feature representation capability helps to improve the recognition performance of the model. We conducted experiments on 7 benchmarks, which shows that this method is highly competitive in recognizing both regular and irregular texts. The method achieved top1 recognition accuracy on four benchmarks of IC03, IC13, IC15, and SVTP.

This paper proposes a collective approach to cited text recognition by exploiting a set of citing text from different articles citing the same article. First, the proposed method gathers highly-ranked cited sentences from the cited article using a group of citing text to create a collective information of probable cited sentences. Then, such collective information is used to determine final cited sentences among highly-ranked sentences from similarity-based cited text recognition. Experiments have been conducted on the data set which consists of research articles from a computational linguistics domain. Evaluation results showed that the proposed method could improve the performance of similarity-based baseline approaches.

Text recognition in natural scene images is a challenging problem in computer vision. The accurate identification of ship number characters can effectively improve the level of ship traffic management. However, due to the blurring caused by motion and text occlusion, the accuracy of ship number recognition is difficult to meet the actual requirements. To solve these problems, this paper proposes a dual-branch network based on the CRNN identification network. The network couples image restoration and character recognition. The CycleGAN module is used for blur restoration branch, and the Pix2pix module is used for character occlusion branch. The two are coupled to reduce the impact of image blur and occlusion. Input the recovered image into the text recognition branch to improve the recognition accuracy. After a lot of experiments, the model is robust and easy to train. Experiments on CTW datasets and real ship maps illustrate that our method can get more accurate results.
