Preparation of $ZrO_2-CaO$ fiber by using a chemical solution process

  • In this work, chemical solution derived Ca-doped zirconia fiber has been prepared by using calcium- and zirconium-naphthenate. Fibrous $ZrO_2$-CaO was drawn from a sticky mixture. Dried gel fibers were finally annealed at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in argon. 91 mol%$ZrO_2$-9 mol%CaO fiber consisted of tetragonal, monoclinic and $CaZrO_3$ phases after annealing at $1000^{\circ}C$. On the other hand, samples annealed at $500^{\circ}C$ consisted of almost tetragonal single phase. Homogeneous fibers surface at $500^{\circ}C$ became rougher after $1000^{\circ}C$-annealing. The sample annealed at $1000^{\circ}C$ with relatively rough surface structure showed a high Calcium phocphate forming ability.

  • Zr(Y,Ce)O2 TZP ceramics were prepared by sintering compacts of 3 mol% Y2O3-TZP(3Y-TZP) powders with different amount of 12 mol% CeO2-TZP(12Ce-TZP) in air at 140$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. The phase changes microstructure and mechanical properties of Zr(Y. Ce)O2 TZP after hydrothermal aging(20$0^{\circ}C$ 5h) were investigated. Although an addition of 12Ce-TZP accelerated the grain growth of Zr(Y, Ce)O2 TZP it restrained the transformation of tetragonal to the monoclinic phase during aging. The degradation in mechanical properties of sintered bodies was governed by the formed monoclinic phase and chemical composition. Induced Vickers indentation crack was propagated intergranually. From SEM observation of the fracture surfaces the pull-out of individual grain was confirmed.

Study on Corrosion Characteristics of Zr-Sn and Zr-Nb-Sn Alloys (Zr-Sn 및 Zr-Nb-Sn 합금의 부식특성에 관한 연구)

  • To evaluate the effect of Sn on the corrosion behavior of Zr alloys for nuclear fuel claddings, the corrosion tests on the binary Zr-xSn and the ternary Zr-0.4Nb-xSn alloys were performed in water at $360^{\circ}C$. The binary alloys containing 0.5, 0.8 and 1.5wt.% Sn showed the transition corrosion rate at 15 days. On the other hand, the binary alloy containing 2.0wt.% Sn showed a good corrosion resistance without the transition of corrosion rate up to 80 days. The corrosion rate of the ternary alloy increased with increasing Sn content. The difference of corrosion behaviors between binary and ternary alloys is considered due to the different solubility of Sn, Nb content and precipitates. The corrosions of Zr-xSn and Zr-0.4Nb-xSn alloys would be controlled by the fraction of tetragonal-$ZrO_2$and the amount of hydrogen pick-up.

Preparation and Characterization of Ceria Stabilized Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystals(I) : Effect of CeO2 Contents on the Mechanical Properties of Ce-TZP (세리아 안정화 지르코니아의 제조 및 특성(I) : CeO2첨가량 변화에 따른 Ce-TZP의 기계적 특성)

  • The usual ceramic process of mixing and milling in state of oxides $ZrO_2$ and $CeO_2$ was adopted in this study in a wet process to manufacture Ce-TZP. $CeO_2$-$ZrO_2$ ceramics containing 8~20 mol% $CeO_2$ were made by heat treatment at $1250\sim1500^{\circ}C$ for 5hr. The maximum dispersion point of every slurry manufactured with a mixture of $ZrO_2$ and $CeO_2$ was neat at pH10. A stable slurry with average particle size of 90 nm can be manufactured when it is dispersed with the use of ammonia water and polycarboxylic acid ammonium. The sintered Ce-TZP ceramics manufactured with the addition of $CeO_2$ in a concentration of less than 10 mol% progressed to the fracture of the specimen due to the existence of a monoclinic phase of more than 30% at room temperature. More than 99% of the tetragonal phase was created for the sintered body with the addition of $CeO_2$ beyond 18 mol%, but the degradation of the mechanical properties on the entire specimen was brought about due to the $CeO_2$ existing in a percentage above 3%. Consequently, the optimal Ce-TZP level combined in the oxide state was identified to be 16 mol% of $CeO_2$ contents.

Preparation of Spherical Monodispersed $ZrO_2$ Fine Powders by Metal Alkoxide Method (금속 알콕사이드법에 의한 구형의 단분산 $ZrO_2$ 미립자의 제조)

  • ZrO2 fine powders were prepared by hydrolysis, adding 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6mol/1H2O/ethanol to 0.1 mol/l Zr(OC3H7)4/ethanol. When hydrolized by adding 0.1mol/l Zr(OC3H7)4/ethanol to 0.1, 0.2mol/l H2O/ethanol., spherical monodispersed ZrO2 fine powders were obtained. And in this condition average sizes were about 0.5, 0.3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, respectively. The more H2O/ethanol concentration increased, the more the particle size decreased and the particles were agglomerated strongly. Prepared powders were amorphous and hydrates. The calcined powders with 43$0^{\circ}C$ and 100$0^{\circ}C$ were showed tetragonal and monoclinic phase, respectively.

  • Effect The effect of sintering additives ($SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, Clay) on the mechanical characteristics of sintered zircon was investigated. 1 vol% of additives in zircon powder was was sintered at $120{\sim}1500^{\circ}C$, the mechanical characteristics were measured, and microstructure analysis were was conducted. $Al_2O_3$ and clay additions increase the formation of monoclinic and tetragonal-$ZrO_2$ formation. An addition of SiO2 addition suppressed the formation of tetragonal-$ZrO_2$ formation., The A specimen sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$ showed the a density of $4.05\;g/cm^3$ and the a microhardness of 1120 HV, respectively.

  • Characteristics of Al2O3-ZrO2 powders prepared by sol-gel process and their sintering behavior were investigated as a function of calcination temperature. The sol-gel processed powders were calcined at 800, 900, 1000, 1100, 1200$^{\circ}C$, and analyzed by X-ray diffraction technique. Pore size and distribution of green compact of the calcined powders were measured by mercury porosimeter. It is suggested that the optimal temperature of calcination for the sintering of Al2O3-ZrO2 powder prepared by sol-gel process is 1100$^{\circ}C$. In the Al2O3-17vol.% ZrO2 sintered specimen, which was sintered at 1600$^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs in air, 69vol.% tetragonal phse existed.

  • Zirconia coated NiO powders were prepared by the thermal hydrolysis of $Zro(NO_3)_2$.$6H_2O$ in a mixed solvent of alcohol and water. Amorphous zirconium hydroxide was uniformly coated on the surface of NiO powder with the thickness of 20nm. The $ZrO_2$ coating layer was crystallized to tetragonal $ZrO_2$ with the size of 40-60nm at $900^{\circ}C$. The coated NiO powder containing 15 vol% $ZrO_2$ was found to have a similar isoelectric point to that of the $ZrO_2$ The grain growth inhibition effect of the coated powders was superior to the mechanically mixed powders.

  • The effects of the additions of transition metal oxides on ZrO$_2$ - Y$_2$O$_3$ (Y$_2$O$_3$ - containing tetragonal zirconia polycrystals : Y-TZP) system has been studied by investigating fracture toughness and phase stability of the sintered specimens. In the specimens sintered at 1450$^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs in air the phase transformation from tetragonal to monoclinic was observed. The ratios of monoclinic phase to tetragonal phase were changed with the additions of CoO, Fe$_2$O$_3$ and MnO$_2$, respectively, from 0.00 to 8.00wt%. The fracture toughness was increased with increasing the monoclinic to tetragonal phase ratio and was maximum at the ratio of about 18%. However, the hardness was decreased with increasing the ratio. The additions of CoO, Fe$_2$O$_3$ and MnO$_2$ together into Y-TZP resulted in more complex behaviors of fracture toughness and hardness. The specimen with the additions of 1.5wt% Fe$_2$O$_3$, 3.0wt% Al$_2$O$_3$ and 1.5wt% CoO showed the monoclinic to tetragonal phase ratio of 18% and the highest toughness of 10.8 MPa.m$\^$$\frac{1}{2}$/ and Vickers hardness of 1201kgf/mm$^2$.

Zr 합금의 부식 및 산화학 특성에 미치는 Sn의 영향

  • 원자력 발전소의 핵연료 피복관 재료로 사용되고 있는 Zr합금의 부식특성에 미치는 Sn의 영향을 조사하기 위해 Sn 함량을 0.5, 0.8, 1.5, 2.0wt.%로 조절한 Zr-xSn 2원계 합금과 Zr-0.4Nb-xSn 3원계 합금을 제조하여 36$0^{\circ}C$ 물 분위기의 mini-autoclave에서 부식실험을 수행하였다. 2원계 합금에서 Sn이 0.5, 0.8, 1.5wt.% 첨가된 합금에서는 15일에서 속도천이가 발생한 후 급격한 부식 가속 현상이 나타났으나, 2.0wt.%가 첨가된 합금에서는 100일까지 부식 실험에서도 천이 현상을 보이지 않는 매우 높은 부식 저항성을 보였다. 그러나 3원계 합금에서는 2원계 합금과는 달리 40일 시험에서도 모든 합금들이 속도 천이 현상을 보이지 않고 천이전 영역에서의 부식 거동을 보이며, Sn 함량 변화에 따른 부식 속도의 차이를 감지할 수 없었다. 이러한 경향은 2원계 합금과 3원계 합금에서 Sn의 고용도 차, 미량 첨가된 Nb의 영향 및 석출물의 특성과 관련이 있는 것으로 사료된다. 또한 수소 흡수율면에서도 Sn 함량 변화에 따라 부식 거동과 비슷한 경향을 보이면서 2.0wt.%에서 가장 낮은 수소흡수율을 보였다 천이전 영역에서 산화막 구조 관찰 결과 천이전 영역의 모든 산화막에서 보호적 성질을 나타내는 tetragonal-ZrO$_2$가 관찰되었는데, tetragonal-ZrO$_2$의 분율은 Sn 함량에 따라 거의 같게 나타났다.
