  • This study was performed to analyze bond strength, the alterations of the interfaces between metal films which are populary used and considered to contribute to the chemical reaction with porcelain, according to constant ion- beam- mixing, and the relation between interfacial chemical reactions and bond strength in metal/porcelain specimens. For this study, three seperate metals : selected-gold, indium and tin were chosen ; each to be bonded to a seperate body porcelain. Bonding occurs when the metal is deposited to the body porcelain using a vacuum evaporator. The vacuum evaporator used $10^{-5}\sim10^{-6}$ Torr vacuum states for the evaporation of various metals (Au, Sn, In). Ion-beam-mixing of the porcelain/metal interfaces caused reactions when the Ar+ was implanted into thin films using a 80 KeV accelerator. These ion-beam-mixed specimens were then compared with an unmixed control group. An analysis of bond strength and ionic changes between the the metal and porcelain was performed by electron spectroscopy of chemical analysis (ESCA) and scratch test. The finding led to the following conclusions : 1. Light microscopic views of the scratch test : The ion-beam-mixed Au/porcelain specimen showed narrower scratched streams than the unmixed specimen. However, the Sn/porcelain, In/porcelain specimens showed no differences in the two conditions. 2. Acoustic emissions in scratch tests : The ion-mixed Au/porcelain, In/porcelain specimens showed signals closer to the metal/porcelain interfaces than unmixed specimens. Conversely, the ion-mixed Sn/porcelain specimen showed more critical signals in superficial portions than unmixed specimens. 3. After ion- beam-mixing, the Au/porcelain specimen showed apparently increased bond strength, and the In/porcelain specimen showed very slightly increased bond strength. However, the Sn/porcelain specimen showed no differences between ion mixed specimen and the unmixed one. 4. ESCA analysis : The ion-beam-mixed Au/porcelain specimen showed a higher peak separated value (4.3eV) than that of the unmixed specimen(3.65eV), the ion-beam-mixed In/porcelain specimen showed a higher peak separated value (9.43eV) than that of the unmixed specimen(7.6eV) and the ion-beam-mixed Sn/porcelain specimen showed a higher peak separated value (8.79eV) than that of the unmixed specimen(8.5eV). 5. Interfacial changes were observed in the ion-mixed Au/porcelain, In/porcelain and Sn/porcelain specimens. Especially, significant interfacial changes were measured in the ion- mixed Sn/porcelain specimen. Tin dioxide(SnO2) and a combination of pure tin and tin dioxide (Sn+SnO2) were produced. 6. In the Au/porcelain specimen, the interfacial chemical reaction showed increased bond strength between gold and porcelain substrate. But, in the In/porcelain, Sn/porcelain specimens, interfacial chemical reactions did not affected the bond strength between metal and porcelain substrate. Especially, bonding strength on the ion mixed Sn/porcelain specimen showed the least amount of difference.

  • The sine sweep base excitation test campaign is a major milestone in the process of mechanical qualification of space structures. The objectives of these vibration tests are to qualify the specimen with respect to the dynamic environment induced by the launcher and to demonstrate that the spacecraft FE model is sufficiently well correlated with the test specimen. Dynamic qualification constraints lead to performing base excitation sine tests using a sine sweep over a prescribed frequency range such that at each frequency the response levels at all accelerometers, load cells and strain gages is the same as the steady state response. However, in practice steady state conditions are not always satisfied. If the sweep rate is too high the response levels will be affected by the presence of transients which in turn will have a direct effect on the estimation of modal parameters. A study funded by ESA and AIRBUS D&S was recently carried out in order to investigate the influence of sine sweep rates in actual test conditions. This paper presents the results of this study along with recommendations concerning the choice of methods.

  • In a micro-unit of electronic-machine, vibration can be excited by a small impact, and this vibration acts as a fatigue load. To measure the vibration effect on the micro unit, a micro dynamic tester is needed to test a micro specimen. In this paper, it has confirmed a movement of the PZT(piezo actuator) to use a sine signal. And, it has confirmed a fracture of specimens by using a tension-tension input signal in PZT. A metal-material property in the micro scale has been tested to compare with the macro scale. A fatigue test has been conducted by using PZT actuator to give a bending-tension effect.

  • In order to measure the sound transmission loss(STL) of a test specimen such as windows, which is smaller than the test opening, a special partition is built into the test opening and the specimen is placed in that partition. This paper discusses how the measured STL is changed by the partition when a small-size window of high sound insulation is mounted. Theoretical and experimental investigations are carried out to quantify the effect of the filler wall. The results reveal that the smaller the window size is, the higher sound insulation performance of the filler wall is required in order to measure the accurate STL of the specimen. It is found that the insufficient sound insulation of the filler wall leads to the lower measured value of the window's STL.

  • This investigation evaluates effects of notch depth, fatigue precrack length and side groove in impact specimen for estimation of a valid K1d by instrumented Charpy impact test. Specimen material is 6005-T6. for notch depth 2.0mm and 2.5mm specimens or within about 2mm fatigue precrack length with notch depth 2.0mm and 2.5mm specimens or within about 2mm fatigue precrack length with notch depth 2.0mm , dynamic fracture toughness [$K_{1d,(1)}$] obtained by crack initiation load($P_m$) should be used. Dynamic fracture toughness of side grooved specimens are overestimated to that of standard impact specimen about 15 %-20%. It is confirmed that the formula of dynamic fracture toughness obtained by impact absorbed energy is inappropriate for ductile materials.

  • Polymer materials have been used offensively as construction materials for automobiles, ships, and airplanes in recent years, and their impact resistance has been obliged to be examined. In the present study, a dropped load and a specimen, equipped with high responsible strain gauges respectively, were dropped and then the changes of load and absorption energy with time were observed. It was found that the waveforms for dropped weight coincided with output signal wave for specimen during the destruction test. Based on this experimental result, three disc type of specimens with different compositions were prepared and examined. This instrumented impact test method showed that each specimen can be distinguished from each other better than conventional tests and is expected to contribute to assess test results of impact resistance for some materials under development.

  • A box scale affects the shear behavior of soils in the direct shear test. The purpose of this study is to investigate the scale effect on the shear behavior of dilative granular materials by testing specimens of different heights placed in a type C shear box. Experimental tests were performed on specimens composed of glass beads with different heights and equal initial void ratios. Results showed that the peak friction and dilation angles linearly increased with the specimen height; however, the residual friction angle remained relatively constant. Similarly, the shear stiffness increased with the specimen height, rapidly reaching its peak state. Height does not have a significant effect on the total volume changes; nevertheless, a high aspect ratio can be assumed to result in global and homogeneous failure. The results and interpretations may be used as reference for recommending shear box scale in direct shear tests.

  • This study has been made to make an observation regarding present status of the coal mine props which is desperately needed for coal production, despite of great shortage of the timber resources in this country, and investigate the effects of diffusion process on the decay resistances of the mine props as applied preservatives of Malenit and chromated zinc chloride. The results are as follows. 1. Present status of the coal mine props Total demand of coal mine props in the year of 1975 was approximately 456 thousand cubic meters. The main species used for mine props are conifer (mainly Pinus densiflora) and hardwood (mainly Quercus). Portions between them are half and half. With non fixed specification, wide varieties of timber in size and form are used. And volume of wood used per ton of coal production shows also wide range from 0.017 cubic meter to 0.03 cubic meter. 2. Decay resistance test a) The oven dry weight decreased between untreated specimen and treated specimen has not shown any significantly, although it has shown some differences in average values between them. It may be caused by the shorter length of the test. b) The strength of compression test between untreated specimen and treated specimen has also shown the same results as shown in case of weight decrease. Reasons assumed are the same. c) The amounts of the extractives in one percent of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) between untreated and treated specimen have shown the large value in case of untreated specimen than that of treated. 3. The economical benifit between untreated and treated wood when applied in field has seen better in long tenn base in case of treated wood, although the primary cost of treated wood add a little bit more cost than that of the untreated wood.

  • Over two decades, many researchers have performed studies on strength size effects in composite laminates under tensile and flexural loads. It is well known that there is a tendency for the strength of fibre-reinforced composites to decrease with increasing specimen size. Under compressive load, however, little work has been done on the effect of specimen size to failure strength. This is due to the fact that compressive testing of composite is very difficult. In this paper, the effect of the test specimen size on the compressive strength of composites containing open hole was considered using T300/924C, $>[45/-45/0/90]_{3S}$. For sizing test specimens, the in-plane scaling method is used i.e., the change of two- dimensional specimen area in specimen width and gauge length. The results clearly show that there is a hole size effect in the finite width plates. In addition, the specimens which have the same a/W(hole diameter/specimen width) exhibit a tendency of size effect. In contrast, test results of the unnotched specimens did not show a clear strength size effect.
