Fiber metal laminates (FMLs) are well known for improved fatigue strength, better impact resistance, superior damage tolerance and slow crack growth rate compared to traditional metallic materials. However, defects and loss of strength of a composite material can occur due to the vertical load from the punch during the joining with a dissimilar material using a conventional clinching method. In the current study, tapered-hole clinching was an alternative process used to join Al 5052 and FMLs. The tapered hole was formed in the FML before the joining. For the better understanding of static and dynamic characteristics, a clinched joining followed by a tensile-shear test was numerically simulated using the finite element analysis. The design parameters were also evaluated for the geometry of the tapered hole by the Taguchi method in order to improve and compare the lateral joining strength of the clinched joint. The influence of the neck thickness and the undercut were evaluated and the contribution of each design parameter was determined. Then, actual experiments for the joining and tensile-shear test were conducted to verify the results of the numerical simulations. In conclusion, the appropriate combination of the design parameters can improve the joining strength and the cross-sections of the tapered-hole clinched joint formed in the actual experiments were in good agreement with the results of the numerical simulations.
Over the past half century, borehole seismic surveys have been diversified into the three techniques such as crosshole, downhole, and suspension logging according to their devices and testing configurations. These field techniques have been improved, in terms of equipment and testing procedures, and are very valuable in the evaluation of ground characteristics for geotechnical and earthquake engineering problems. Yet, despite the importance and significance of the techniques as engineering tools, the techniques are not much used as standard penetration test (SPT) by practicing engineers. The possible explanations are cost and operational difficulties of the surveys as well as sophistication and complexity of the devices. An in-hole seismic method has been developed to meet the requirement of economical testing cost and practicality in engineering practice to measure dynamic soil properties. The prototype in-hole probe developed herein is small and light enough to be fit in three-inch boreholes and to be handled with bare hands. The performance of the source has been evaluated through extensive crosshole tests at various sites. The in-hole seismic method was adopted at three test sites and verified by comparing with crosshole results.

A characteristic of discharge for a foam spray nozzle with various parameters was investigated. The discharge patterns from a fire foam spray nozzle are important to evenly spray over a maximum possible floor area. Two parameters of a foam spray nozzle were chosen, and compared with those from the standard one. Also, in order to evaluate the performance of discharged foam agents used to protect structures from heat and fire damages, the thermal characteristics of fire-protection foams were experimentally investigated. A simple repeatable test for fire-protection foams subjected to fire radiation was developed. This test involves foam generation equipment, a fire source for heat generation, and data acquisition techniques. Results show that the bubble size of foam is increased by large inside diameter of orifice or closed air hole, but phenomenon of discharge angle and expansion ratio is opposite. For the case of the open air hole, liquid film of a circular cone discharges with formation, growth, split and fine grain. In case of the closed air hole, a pillar of foam solution discharges with that. Though the temperature gradient in the foam increases with increased foam expansion ratio. it is not change with increased intensity of heat flux.
Fiber-reinforced composite materials with carbon, glass, and aramid fibers are widely applied to industrial field structures due to their excellent properties. However, carbon fibers are vulnerable to external impacts, whereas aramid fibers degrade when exposed to water. This study evaluated carbon/aramid fiber composites degraded and damaged by high-temperature saline environments using acoustic emission (AE). The test specimen was molded using an autoclave and immersed in seawater at 70 ℃ for 224 days. In order to imitate the damage, a 3-mm-diameter hole was drilled using a diamond drill. Additionally, the specimen with the perforation was repaired by patch attachment processing. Three-point bending was used to conduct the flexural experiment, and an AE sensor with a 150-kHz resonance frequency was attached to evaluate the damage and the effect of patch attachment. AE accumulative counts obtained at the maximum load were 69.2, 67.1, and 91.2 for a high-temperature seawater deteriorated condition, a hole specimen, and a repaired patch specimen, respectively. Furthermore, the maximum amplitude of AE was detected at low values of 28 dB, 31.3 dB, and 30.3 dB.

Vertical congressive and horizontal pile load tests were performed to a instrumented large diameter (D : 1,000 mm) drilled shaft. A drilled shaft was penetrated into the weathered soil and weathered rock. PMT was done for evaluation of properties for these strata. It was expected to be difficult to get undisturbed samples of weathered soils and rocks. Thus. PMT was done at the several selected depths. In those strata, to prevent the test bore hole from collapsing, bentonite slurry was used for making the test bore hole. In this study. soil properties was evaluated by means of PMT results and estimating method (direct method, the Memard method) of vertical pile capacity and horizontal pile behaviors were summarized. Also, vertical and horizontal pile capacity were calculated using PMT and pile load test results.

An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the flow field around the wing having a circular damage hole. The damage was represented by a circular hole passing through the model with 10% airfoil chord diameter and normal to the chord. The hole was centered at quarter or half chord. The PIV flow fields and static pressure measurements on the wing upper and lower surface were carried out at Rec=2.85×105 based on the chord length. The PIV results showed the two types of flow structures around a damage hole were formed. The first one was a weak jet that formed an attached wake behind the damage hole. The second one resulted from increased incidence; this was a strong jet where the flow through the hole penetrates into the free-stream resulting in extensive separation of oncoming boundary layer flow and development of a separated wake with reverse flow. The surface pressure data showed a big pressure alteration near the circular damage hole. The severity of pressure alteration was increased as a damage hole located nearer to the leading edge.

Slip coefficient, whose value is dependent on the condition of contact surface at the friction joint of high tension bolt, is determined by slip load. Because contact area affects slip load, contact area that varies with bolt hole size is also related to the slip coefficient. In this study, we manufactured 32 specimens and performed bending and tension tests in order to examine changes in slip coefficient and load with material type, bolt diameter, and size of bolt hole. Slip load of specimens with oversize bolt hole had strength that was more than 80% higher than the slip load of specimens with standard bolt hole, and it also exceeded the design slip strength. In addition, we observed significant correlation between net-section ratio and slip ratio of specimens with oversize and standard bolt hole. However, some differences between the specimens are thought to have been caused by reduction in initial axial force of high tension bolt, which is an important parameter of slip coefficient. It is self-evident that increased bolt hole size would lead to decrease in design strength as it reduces both slip coefficient and bolt axial force. Nevertheless, we suggest that some flexibility in regulation of bolt hole, as long as it does not threaten the structural stability, may be a positive factor in terms of workability and efficiency.

Dynamic stiffness of subsurface materials is one of the most important geotechnical parameters in predicting deformational behavior of structures as well as practicing seismic design and performance evaluation. In an effort to measure the parameter efficiently and accurately, various borehole seismic testing techniques have been, thus, developed and used during past several decades. Moreover, recent rush of underground-space projects and increasing size of structures put more stress on reliable site investigation techniques in estimating stiffness of rock mass. In this paper, a new technique called 'in-hole seismic test' has been implemented to measure the dynamic stiffness of rock masses at subsurface foundations and tunnel-faces. The reliance of in-hole seismic test was evaluated by comparing the testing results at several rock sites with those of other borehole techniques and the technique tunnls out to be an efficient and accurate in-situ testing technique.
Gas turbines are extensively used in flight propulsion, electrical power generation, and other industrial applications. During its life span, a turbine blade is taken out periodically for repair and maintenance. This includes re-coating the blade surface and re-drilling the cooling holes/channels. A successful laser re-drilling requires the measurement of a hole within the accuracy of ${\pm}0.15mm$ in position and ${\pm}3^{\circ}$ in orientation. Detection of gas turbine blade/vane cooling hole position and orientation thus becomes a very important step for the vane/blade repair process. The industry is in urgent need of an automated system to fulfill the above task. This paper proposes approaches and algorithms to detect the cooling hole position and orientation by using a vision system mounted on a robot arm. The channel orientation is determined based on the alignment of the vision system with the channel axis. The opening position of the channel is the intersection between the channel axis and the surface around the channel opening. Experimental results have indicated that the concept of cooling hole identification is feasible. It has been shown that the reproducible detection of cooling channel position is with +/- 0.15mm accuracy and cooling channel orientation is with +/$-\;3^{\circ}$ with the current test conditions. Average processing time to search and identify channel position and orientation is less than 1 minute.

The numerical procedure for calculating non-uniform residual stress fields by using relieved strain data from incremental hole drilling method is presented. Finite element calculations are described to evaluate the relieved coefficients required for the determination of residual stresses. From the results of simulations it is found that this numerical method is well adopted to measuring non-uniform residual stress in the hole depth range of 0.8 times of the hole diameter from the surface. In order to examine the practicability of this method, the hole drilling procedure for the four point bending test is performed. This method is applied to the measurement of residual stresses in the cold-rolled steel pipe. It is shown that the magnitude of residual stress in the pipe is not negligible when compared with yield stress and the residual stress should be duly considered in designing structures with this pipes.
