Building reconstruction attempts to generate geometric and radiometric models of existing buildings usually from sensory data, which have been traditionally aerial or satellite images, more recently airborne LIDAR data, or the combination of these data. Extensive studies on building reconstruction from these data have developed some competitive algorithms with reasonable performance and some degree of automation. Nevertheless, the level of details and completeness of the reconstructed building models often cannot reach the high standards that is now or will be required by various applications in future. Hence, the use of terrestrial sensory data that can provide higher resolution and more complete coverage has been intensively emphasized. We developed a fusion framework for building reconstruction from terrestrial sensory data, that is, points from a laser scanner, images from digital camera, and absolute coordinates from a total station. The proposed approach was then applied to reconstructing a building model from real data sets acquired from a large complex existing building. Based on the experimental results, we assured that the proposed approach cam achieve high resolution and accuracy in building reconstruction. The proposed approach can effectively contribute in developing an operational system producing large urban models for 3D GIS with reasonable resources.
Comparing to general scanning data, the 3D digital map for large construction sites and complex buildings consists of millions of points. The large construction site needs to be scanned multiple times by drone photogrammetry or terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) survey. The scanned point cloud data are required to be registrated with high resolution and high point density. Unlike the registration of 2D data, the matrix of translation and rotation are used for registration of 3D point cloud data. Archiving high accuracy with 3D point cloud data is not easy due to 3D Cartesian coordinate system. Therefore, in this study, iterative closest point (ICP) registration method for improve accuracy of 3D digital map was employed by different overlap ratio on 3D digital maps. This study conducted the accuracy test using different overlap ratios of two digital maps from 10% to 100%. The results of the accuracy test presented the optimal overlap ratios for an ICP registration method on digital maps.
In this paper, automatic structure boundary extraction is proposed using terrestrial LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) in 3-dimensional data. This paper describes an algorithm which does not use pictures and pre-processing. In this algorithm, an efficient decimation method is proposed, considering the size of object, the amount of LIDAR data, etc. From these decimated data, object points and non-object points are distinguished using distance information which is a major features of LIDAR. After that, large and small values are extracted using local variations, which can be candidate for boundary. Finally, a boundary line is drawn based on the boundary point candidates. In this way, the approximate boundary of the object is extracted.

For spatial analysis and decision-making based on territorial and urban information, technologies on 3D GIS with digital image data and photo-realistic 3D image models to visualize 3D modeling are being rapidly developed. Currently, satellite images, aerial images and aerial LiDAR data are mostly used to build 3D models and textures from oblique aerial photographs or terrestrial photographs are used to create 3D image models. However, we are in need of quality 3D image models as current models cannot express topographic and features most elaborately and realistically. Thus, this study analyzed techniques to use aerial photographs, aerial LiDAR, terrestrial photographs and terrestrial LiDAR to create a 3D image model with artificial features and special topographic that emphasize spatial accuracy, delicate depiction and photo-realistic imaging. A 3D image model with spatial accuracy and photographic texture was built to be served via 3D image map services systems on the Internet. As it was necessary to consider intended use and display scale when building 3D image models, in this study, we applied the concept of LoD(Level of Detail) to define 3D image model of buildings in five levels and established the models by following the levels.
In this study, information on vegetation was collected using a point cloud through a 3-D Terrestrial Lidar Scanner, and the physical shape was analyzed by reconfiguring the object based on the refined data. Each filtering step of the raw data was optimized, and the reference volume and the estimated results using the Alpha Shape and Voxel techniques were compared. As a result of the analysis, when the volume was calculated by applying the Alpha Shape, it was overestimated than reference volume regardless of data filtering. In addition, the Voxel method to be the most similar to the reference volume after the 8th filtering, and as the filtering proceeded, it was underestimated. Therefore, when re-implementing an object using a point cloud, internal voids due to the complex shape of the target object must be considered, and it is necessary to pay attention to the filtering process for optimal data analyzed in the filtering process.
The purpose of this study is digitalization of earthwork such as development of 3D terrain analysis platform using latest technologies including unmanned aerial vehicle and terrestrial laser scanner to ultimately achieve earthwork automation. It is necessary to develop related element technologies and to establish regulations so that it can be applied to the domestic construction projects. As a result of pilot project about the earthwork surveying automation technology, it was confirmed that information such as terrain coordinates, soil, boring, and excavation volume is acquired smoothly. In this paper, we investigate related regulations and manuals in Japan and propose the improvement plan of domestic regulation. We plan to study regulations from early to final construction stage, combine with the 'regulation for public surveying', and improve the regulations in detail.

Plant height is a growth parameter that provides visible insights into the plant's growth status and has a high correlation with yield, so it is widely used in crop breeding and cultivation research. Investigation of the growth characteristics of crops such as plant height has generally been conducted directly by humans using a ruler, but with the recent development of sensing and image analysis technology, research is being attempted to digitally convert growth measurement technology to efficiently investigate crop growth. In this study, the canopy height of rice grown at various nitrogen fertilization levels was measured using a laser scanner capable of precise measurement over a wide range, and a comparative analysis was performed with the actual plant height. As a result of comparing the point cloud data collected with a laser scanner and the actual plant height, it was confirmed that the estimated plant height measured based on the average height of the top 1% points showed the highest correlation with the actual plant height (R2 = 0.93, RMSE = 2.73). Based on this, a linear regression equation was derived and used to convert the canopy height measured with a laser scanner to the actual plant height. The rice growth curve drawn by combining the actual and estimated plant height collected by various nitrogen fertilization conditions and growth period shows that the laser scanner-based canopy height measurement technology can be effectively utilized for assessing the plant height and growth of rice. In the future, 3D images derived from laser scanners are expected to be applicable to crop biomass estimation, plant shape analysis, etc., and can be used as a technology for digital conversion of conventional crop growth assessment methods.

The aim of the present study is to enhance query speed of large 3D point cloud indexed in octree by parallel query using multi-cores. Especially, it is focused on developing methods of accessing multiple leaf nodes in octree concurrently to query points residing within a radius from a given coordinates. To the end, two parallel query methods are suggested using different strategies to distribute query overheads to each core: one using automatic division of 'for routines' in codes controlled by OpenMP and the other considering spatial division. Approximately 18 million 3D points gathered by a terrestrial laser scanner are indexed in octree and tested in a system with a 8-core CPU to evaluate the performances of a non-parallel and the two parallel methods. In results, the performances of the two parallel methods exceeded non-parallel one by several times and the two parallel rivals showed competing aspects confronting various query radii. Parallel query is expected to be accelerated by anticipated improvements of distribution strategies of query overhead to each core.

Recently, rapid urbanization has necessitated continuous updates in digital map to provide the latest and accurate information for users. However, conventional aerial photogrammetry has some restrictions on periodic updates of small areas due to high cost, and as-built drawing also brings some problems with maintaining quality. Alternatively, this paper proposes a scheme for efficient and accurate update of digital map using point cloud data acquired by Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS). Initially, from the whole point cloud data, the building sides are extracted and projected onto a 2D image to trace out the 2D building footprints. In order to register the footprint extractions on the digital map, 2D Affine model is used. For Affine parameter estimation, the centroids of each footprint groups are randomly chosen and matched by means of a modified RANSAC algorithm. Based on proposed algorithm, the experimental results showed that it is possible to renew digital map using building footprint extracted from TLS data.

The use of Hi-Tech in cultural heritage preservation and the promotion of cultural heritage values in general, particularly artifacts, opens new opportunities for attracting tourists while also posing a challenge due to the need to reward high-quality excursions to visitors historical and cultural values. Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Hi-Tech in new building management have been widely adopted in the construction industry; however, Historic Building Information Modeling (HBIM) is an exciting challenge in 3D modeling and building management. For those reasons, the Scan-to-HBIM approach involves generating an HBIM model for existing buildings from the point cloud data collected by Terrestrial 3D Laser Scanner integrated with Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), contributes to spatial historic sites simulation for virtual experiences. Therefore, this study aims to (1) generate the application of Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality to Historic Building Information Modeling - based workflows in a case study which is a monument in the city; (2) evaluate the application of these technologies to improve awareness of visitors related to the promotion of historical values by surveying the experience before and after using this application. The findings shed light on the barriers that prevent users from utilizing technologies and problem-solving solutions. According to the survey results, after experiencing virtual tours through applications and video explanations, participant's perception of the case study improved. When combined with emerging Hi-Tech and immersive interactive games, the Historic Building Information Modeling helps increase information transmission to improve visitor awareness and promote heritage values.
