Phytochemical Constituents of Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum

  • Phytochemical investigation of the 80% MeOH extract from the leaves of Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum resulted in the isolation of seventeen compounds; two terpenes, three norsesquiterpenes, one furofuran lignan, and eleven phenolic derivatives. Their chemical structures were characterized by spectroscopic methods to be trans-phytol (1), phytene-1,2-diol (2), icariside B2 (3), (6S,9S)-roseoside (4), sedumoside G (5), pinoresinol-4-O-glucoside (6), 2-methoxy-2-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)ethanol (7), 2-hydroxy-2-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)ethanol (8), Benzyl ${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (9), methyl ferulate (10), trans-ferulic acid (11), methyl-p-hydroxycinnamate (12), glucosyl methyl ferulate (13), linocaffein (14), siringin (15), 2-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-ethyl-O-${\beta}$-Dglucopyranoside (16), and pseudolaroside C (17). All compounds were isolated for the first time from this plant.

The Flavor Components of Korean Cnidium officinale Makino (국내산 천궁의 향기 성분)

  • This study was performed to identify the flavor compnenets of Korean Cnidium officinale M.. The extraction of the flavor compounds of Cnidium officinale M. was accomplished by a simultaneous distillation and extraction method using a Likens and Nickerson's extraction apparatus. The concentrated extract was analyzed and identified by gas chromatography and GC-mass spectrometry. The change of the 림팩 contents in each samples was determined in terms of two different storage conditions. The flavor contents of sample at low temperature storage were higher than those at room temperature storage, and increased until storage period of 70 days. The major components of Cnidium officinale M. were terpene compounds including α-pinene, β -selinene, γ-selinene, and phthalides including butylidenephthalide, cnidilide, neocnidilide, senkyunolide A, ligustilide, which are believed to contribute to the characteristic flavor of the Cnidium officinale M.. Especially, great amount of cnidilide and ligustilide was shown in sample of low temperature storage.

  • VOCs 배출원은 크게 인위적인 배출원과 자연적인 배출원으로 나눌 수 있다. 식물은 자연 발생적 VOCs(NVOCs)의 가장 주요한 배출원이며, 대기 중으로 유입되는 반응성이 강한 탄소의 주요한 배출원이다. 이소프린, terpene, 알콜, 카르보닐화합물, 에스테르 등은 식물에서 발생되는 대표적인 탄화수소화합물들이다. 이러한 물질들은 에어로졸의 형성 등 전지구적 대기화학반응, 광역적 광화학산화제 (특히 오존)의 형성, 탄소순환의 수지균형 비도시지역의 산성침적에 기여하는 유기산의 생성 등에 주요한 영향을 끼친다. (중략)

  • Column chromatographic separation of the MeOH extract from the aerial parts of Paris verticillata led to the isolation of three phenolics, two terpene glucosides and two pyrrolidine alkaloids. Their structures were characterized to be methyl caffeate (1), 5-hydroxy pyrrolidin-2-one (2), vanillic acid (3), benzyl alcohol glucopyranoside (4), (6S, 9R)-roseoside (5), staphylionoside H (6) and 5-methoxy pyrrolidin-2-one (7) by spectroscopic means. The isolated compounds (1-7) were for the first time reported from this source. The isolated compounds were tested for their cytotoxicity against four human tumor cell lines by SRB method in vitro.

  • 펄프폐수 내에 존재하는 대표적인 수지 구성성분의 일종인 wood resin 화합물이 메탄생성균에 미치는 독성을 평가하기 위한 회분식 독성실험을 수행하였다. 수지는 극성용매로 추출가능한 몇몇 wood 구성성분의 혼합물로서 수지의 주요 구성성분은 긴 사슬 휘발성유기산, terpenes, resin acids, 리그난과 극성 페놀류들이다. 메탄생성균의 독성실험은 $30^{\circ}C$에서 표준회분식 실험방법을 채택하였고 식종물질로서는 입상슬러지를 사용하였다. 극성페놀의 한 종류인 4-hydroxystilbene가 가장 높은 독성을 나타내었으며, 50% 저해를 일으키는 농도는 $20mg/\ell$이었다. Resin acid와 휘발성 terpene 역시 메탄생성균에 독성을 나타내었으며, 50% 독성을 일으키는 농도는 $43{\;}~{\;}330mg/\ell$이었다. 반면에 triterpenes은 1,000 to $1,300{\;}mg/\ell$의 상대적으로 높은 농도에서도 메탄생성균에 독성을 일으키지 않았다. 따라서 wood resin의 구성성분이 몇몇 펄프폐수의 혐기성 처리에 있어서 독성을 일으키는 주요물질이었다.

Cytotoxic Terpene Hydroperoxides from the Aerial Parts of Aster spathulifolius

  • Three new sesquiterpene hydroperoxides, 1-[3-(2-hydroperoxy-3-methylbut-3-en)-4-hydroxyphenyl]ethanone (2), $7{\beta}-hydroperoxy-eudesma-11-en-4-ol$ (3), and $7{\alpha}-hydroperoxymanool$ (4), together with three known compounds, germacrone (1), ent-germacra-4(15),5,10(14)-trien-$1{\alpha}$-ol (5) and teucdiol A (6) were isolated from the aerial parts of Aster spathulifolius (Compositae). Their structures were characterized using chemical and spectroscopic methods. The isolated compounds were tested for their cytotoxicity against five human tumor cell lines in vitro using a SRB method. The two new compounds, 3 and 4, showed moderate cytotoxicity against human cancer cells with $ED_{50}$ values ranging from 0.24 to $13.27\;{\mu}g/mL$.

  • Recycling of ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM) scrap was tried by blending with polypropylene (PP). EPDM scrap powder was prepared by shear pulverization process at high temperature, which may lead to selective chain scission induced by difference in the critical elastic coefficient. On the other hand, EPDM scrap powder was prepared by adding a selected reclaiming agent during shear pulverization process at high temperature. Terpene as a bonding agent was then introduced to improve adhesion property. PP, used as a matrix for manufacturing thermoplastic elastomer, was modified by the incorporation of dicumyl peroxide and maleic anhydride. The functionalized EPDM and modified PP were blended and cured dynamically at $190^{\circ}C$. The blend materials prepared in this study showed the comparable results to those of conventional TPE in terms of tensile and flow properties. Also, the odor component of recycled EPDM was analyzed using GC-MS.

Analysis of Volatile Compounds in Bulgogi Prepared by Different Heating Procedure

  • To compare volatile compounds in bulgogi cooked by different heating procedures, bulgogi was prepared by convection oven, electric pan and charcoal grill. A total of 61 volatile compounds, consisting of 4 pyrazines, 10 sulfur-containing compounds, 7 carbonyls, 7 alcohols, 7 aliphatic hydrocarbons, 25 terpene hydrocarbons, and 1 miscellaneous compound, were tentatively identified in bulgogi cooked by the three heating methods. Comparatively, the difference in volatile compounds identified in bulgogi using the three different heating methods was not significant, except for sulfur-containing compounds and carbonyls which were detected at higher levels in the bulgogi cooked by convection oven than in that cooked by the other two heating methods. On the other hand, some compounds, such as furfural, benzaldehyde, and (E,E)-2,4-decadienal, were detected only in the bulgogi cooked by charcoal.

Limonene Inhibits Methamphetamine-Induced Sensitizations via the Regulation of Dopamine Receptor Supersensitivity

  • Limonene is a cyclic terpene found in citrus essential oils and inhibits methamphetamine- induced locomotor activity. Drug dependence is a severe neuropsychiatric condition that depends in part on changes in neurotransmission and neuroadaptation, induced by exposure to recreational drugs such as morphine and methamphetamine. In this study, we investigated the effects of limonene on the psychological dependence induced by drug abuse. The development of sensitization, dopamine receptor supersensitivity, and conditioned place preferences in rats was measured following administration of limonene (10 or 20 mg/kg) and methamphetamine (1 mg/kg) for 4 days. Limonene inhibits methamphetamine- induced sensitization to locomotor activity. Expression of dopamine receptor supersensitivity induced by apomorphine, a dopamine receptor agonist, was significantly reduced in limonenepretreated rats. However, there was no significant difference in methamphetamine-induced conditioned place preferences between the limonene and control groups. These results suggest that limonene may ameliorate drug addiction-related behaviors by regulating postsynaptic dopamine receptor supersensitivity.

  • Twenty Artemisia species are distributed in South Korea and rich in terpenoids. Artemisia rubripes (Compositae) has been used as a Korean traditional medicine for stomachache. vomiting. diarrhea and hemostatic agent. The antimutagenic effect and essential oils of Artemisia rubripes were reported, but phytochemical study has not been fully investigated. As part of our systematic study on the terpene constituents of Artemisia species. we have investigated A. rubripes (1 kg) collected at Dae-Kwan ryung. Gangwon Province on Aug. 1997. (omitted)
