Effect of the Processing History on the Morphology and Properties of the Ternary Blends of Nylon 6, a Thermotropic Liquid Crystalline Polymer, and a Functionalized Polypropylene

  • Properties of ternary blends of nylon 6 (Ny6), a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (TLCP, poly(ester amide), 20 wt%) and a maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (2 wt%) (MAPP) were studied under various processing conditions. TLCP was pre-blended with MAPP first and then the binary one blended again with Ny6. The processing temperature of the second mixing was varied. Thermal properties show the partial miscibility of the ternary blend. The morphology of the TLCP phase in the first blending shows mostly in the fibril bundle shape, but varies between droplets and oriented fibrils after the second processing. Some of TLCP phase lost the fibril morphology during the second processing stage. The morphology variation invokes the change in tensile properties. Low extrusion temperature (270$\^{C}$) provides more fibril shapes, which are associated with less deformation in the second stage. The processing temperature effect was more evident when the draw ratio was high. High drawing was applicable due to the stabilizing action of tile compatibilizer.

  • In this work, we present the development of phase structure of the poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA)/ poly(vinylacetate)(PVAc) mixtures in ethyl acetate solution by light scattering. The PMMA/PVAc blends cast from ethyl acetate solutions exhibited fine "modulated structures" over broad blend composition ranges, which originated from the spinodal decomposition of the ternary polymer solutions at low polymer concentrations during the casting. The periodic distance was depended on the blend compositions and evaporation times.

Strength and chloride penetration of Portland cement mortar containing palm oil fuel ash and ground river sand

  • This paper presents a study of the strength and chloride penetration of blended Portland cement mortar containing ground palm oil fuel ash (POA) and ground river sand (GS). Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) was partially replaced with POA and GS. Compressive strength, rapid chloride penetration test (RCPT) and chloride penetration depth of mortars were determined. The GS only asserted the packing effect and its incorporation reduced the strength and the resistance to chloride penetration of mortar. The POA asserted both packing and pozzolanic effects. The use of the blend of equal portion of POA and GS also produced high strength mortars, save cost and excellent resistance to chloride penetration owing to the synergic effect of the blend of POA and GS. For chloride depth, the mathematical model correlates well with the experimental results. The computer graphics of chloride depth of the ternary blended mortars are also constructed and can be used to aid the understanding and the proportioning of the blended system.

Investigation on Polyacrylonitrile/Cellulose Acetate Blends

  • The molecular interactions of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and cellulose acetate (CA) were investigated thoroughly via dilute solution viscometry in dimethylformamide (DMF) as a common solvent at $30^{\circ}C$. The intrinsic viscosities and viscometric interaction parameters were experimentally determined for both binary (polymer/dimethylformamide) and ternary (PAN/CA/dimethylformamide) systems. As all investigated PAN/CA ternaries evidenced negative viscometric interaction parameter values $({\Delta}b\;&{\Delta}k<0)$, the existence of repulsive intermolecular interactions was deduced, and PAN/CA blends were assigned as immiscible. Moreover, the results of microscopy photograph analysis indicated that pure PAN film evidences a homophasic structure, and the size of the phase domain increases gradually with increases in CA. In DSC analysis, it was determined that the glass transition temperature of the blend film increased slightly with increases in the CA content of the blend film.

Trans-octylene rubber(TOR)의 첨가가 NBR/EPDM 고무블렌드의 물성에 미치는 영향 (Effect of trans-octylene rubber(TOR) on the properties of NBR/EPDM rubber blends)

  • trans-octylene rubber(TOR)를 비상용성 블렌드인 NBR/EPDM(70/30)에 첨가하고, 이에 따른 혼합 특성 모폴로지 및 물성의 변화에 관하여 조사하였다. TOR이 첨가됨으로써 블렌드 시 혼합에너지가 감소하였고, 혼합 시 수반되는 온도상승도 저하됨을 볼 수 있었다. 블렌드의 모폴로지를 SEM으로 관찰한 결과, EPDM이 NBR 매트릭스에 분산된 형태인 것을 알았으며, TOR의 첨가에 의해 분산상인 EPDM상이 균일하고 미세해지는 것이 관찰되었다. TOR이 첨가됨으로써 NBR/EPDM의 인장강도, 파단신율 및 모듈러스 둥의 인장물성이 향상되었다. 오존저항성은 임계 응력-변형관계로부터 정량적으로 평가하였으며, TOR이 첨가된 블렌드에서 오존크랙을 일으키는 임계에너지값이 증가됨을 알 수 있었다. TOR의 첨가로 인한 NBR/EPDM 블렌드의 물성 향상은 모폴로지의 미세화와 사슬얽힘으로 인한 가교밀도의 변화 때문인 것으로 판단된다.

Effect of a Compatibilizer on the Microstructure and Properties of Partially Biodegradable LDPE/Aliphatic Polyester/Organoclay Nanocomposites

  • In the present work, low density polyethylene (LDPE)/aliphatic polyester (APES)/organoclay ternary nanocomposites were prepared. In particular, the effect of a compatibilizer, polyethylene-graft-maleic anhydride (PE-g-MAH), on the morphology and properties of the ternary nanocomposites was investigated. LDPE/APES/organoclay nanocomposites were prepared through melt intercalation method using two different kinds of organoclay. The dispersibility of silicate clays in the nanocomposites was investigated by X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. The ternary nanocomposites showed higher tensile properties than the LDPE/APES blend did. The dispersibility and properties of nanocomposites containing Cloisite 30B were better than those of the nanocomposites containing Cloisite 20A. Unlike Cloisite 20A, hydroxyl groups in the intercalants in Cloisite 30B interlayer underwent a certain polar interaction with the carboxyl group of APES, favoring the intercalation of APES chains and the formation of LDPE/APES/Closite 30B nanocomposites. However, the introduction of the polar hydroxyl groups also enhanced the interaction with the silicate surface at the same time, thereby rendering somewhat difficult the replacement of the surface contacts by LDPE chains, and impeding the extensive intercalation and further exfoliation of Cloisite 30B in the LDPE/APES matrix. The compatibilizer enhanced the intercalation of the polymer chain inside the clay gallery and thus improved the mechanical properties of the ternary nanocomposites. Rheological measurements of the nanocomposites via frequency sweep experiment indicated a certain interaction between the clay platelet and the polymer molecules in the melted state.

  • 이축 압출기에서 삼성분계 블렌드가 용융 혼련될 때 상구조의 형성과정에 대하여 연구하였다. 삼성분계 블렌드의 연속상은 polycarbonate(PC)로 고정하였고 나머지 분산상을 이루는 성분으로는 acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene(ABS), methyl methacrylate-butadiene-ethyl acrylate(MBE), styrene-acrylonitrile(SAM) 공중합체, 그리고 poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA)를 사용하였다. 블렌드의 여러 가지 조성에 따라 최종 상구조는 현저한 차이를 보였고 특히 MBE와 PMMA의 경우는 각각 PC-SAN의 계면에 선택적으로 위치하였다. 삼성분계 고분자 블렌드의 상구조 형성과정은 성분간의 계면장력과 합체 현상의 상호 작용에 의하여 지배되었으며 합체의 정도는 계면에서의 점도에 의하여 민감하게 변화되었다.

  • 염소화폴리에틸렌이 비상용성 블렌드인 폴리프로필렌과 니트릴고무 블렌드의 모폴로지와 기계적물성에 미치는 영향을 블렌드의 조성 및 cPE의 첨가량을 변화시켜가며 조사하였다. 염소화폴리에틸렌을 첨가함에 따라 분산상의 크기가 감소되며 분산상 크기가 보다 균일하게 됨을 알 수 있었으며, 블렌드의 인장강도, 인열강도, 파단신율이 크게 증가됨을 알 수 있었다. 모폴로지와 기계적물성의 변화로부터 상용화제의 적정 첨가량은 니트릴고무에 대해 5-10 wt% 인 것으로 판단되었다.
