  • Objectives: This article aims to clarify the understanding and publication status of both The Treasured Mirror of Eastern Medicine (Donguibogam) and some of its recent research progress made in North Korea, as well as their influences upon the academic of Koryo medicine in North Korea. Methods: Analysis was carried out based on various reference books, dictionaries and Korean translation of Donguibogam (1964 Ver.) published by North Korea, as well as the North Korean quarterly medical journal, Koryo Medicine. Results: The academic of Koryo medicine in North Korea regards Donguibogam, a Korean medical classic as it was written by native Korean physicians and it became an important ground material for basic research and clinical study. Various terminologies used in the original version of Donguibogam were defined as unscientific and superstitious by North Korean academics, which were then subsequently removed from the Korean translation of Donguibogam (1964 Ver.) published by North Korea. Therefore, this version cannot be seen as a complete edition of Donguibogam. Conclusions: The Donguibogam is known as one of the 'three major books of Koryo medicine' in North Korea. As a treasure of East-Asian traditional medical classic, Donguibogam is expected to become the medium for a closer research collaboration between the North and South Koreas including China in the future.

  • The goal of this study is to develop a skill system for the areas of agriculture, forestry and fisheries among the skill frameworks that require basic examination in the development of skill standards. More specifically, the study aims to classify skills in the areas of agriculture, forestry and fisheries and to develop respective skill level. We classified skills and created the skill level through a study of documents, interview with experts and in-depth discussions with expert group centering on terminologies commonly used in the industrial settings. As a result of skill classification, we were able to classify skills into four categories in medium-scale classification, 13 categories in small-scale classification, and again into total 42 categories. We classified the skill level in the areas of agriculture, forestry and fisheries into 8 stages. Based on the skill system, we provided definition of skill and skill group, definition of each different skill, and performance standard by skill and level.

  • This study is an analysis of the Aquaculture Industry Development Act that has recently been passed by the National Assembly. In order to improve the structural problem of Korea's aquaculture, a large revision of aquaculture related laws and regulations is needed. The enactment of Aquaculture Industry Development Act is necessary to that effect. It is adequate to aim for development as aquaculture industry not as aquaculture, to alleviate entry restriction of aquaculture, and to provision diverse promotion and support policies. However, it is a concern whether the current Aquaculture Industry Development Act can achieve its goal of enhancing the competitiveness of aquaculture and sustainability. Rather than to solve the problem, the act holds the possibility of further fixing or exacerbating the problem. So there is concern for side-effects after the enactment. This is due to the fact that it complicates terminologies by unnecessarily differentiating aquaculture related concepts from the existing Fisheries Act, lacks regulations regarding voluntary participation in aquaculture, and has limited methods to alleviate entry restriction. In addition, there are very few measures for the scale improvement of aquaculture along with the unlikeliness of a significant effect of the review and evaluation for re-licensing. Thus, the Aquaculture Industry Development Act should promptly be revised after its enactment.

  • In oriental medicine, there is the fundamentals to lead a stirring life, and it is an important matter that make a study of fundamentals for treatment. The su-wen(素問) mentions the fundamentals of sheng(生之本), the fundamentals of qi(氣之本), the fundamentals of feng-cang(封藏之本), the fundamentals of ba-ji(罷極之本) and the fundamentals of cang-lin(倉廩之本). They are terminologies expressing physiological functions of the five viscera - heart, lungs, kidneys, liver and spleen. The five viscera are expressed through face, fur, hair, nail and lips. And the five viscera are closely connected with blood, skin, bone, muscle and flesh. Through the changes of personal appearance, we can recognize those of their internal organs. In oriental medicine, they are called as the cang-xiang(藏象). Heart is the fundamentals of sheng(生), and it is related to spirit, blood and blood vessel. Lungs are the fundamentals of qi(氣), because they master the extensive meaning of qi(氣). Kidneys are the fundamentals of feng-cang(封藏) which means seclusion. Liver is the fundamentals of ba-ji(罷極) that have several view by concept. Spleen, stomach, large and small intestines, paunch and bladder are the fundamentals of cang-lin(倉廩), that is to say, gastrointestinal tract that ingest diet and digest it.

  • Capsule endoscopy is one of the increasingly demanded diagnostic methods among patients in recent years because of its ability to observe small intestine difficulties. It is often conducted for 12 to 14 hours, but significant frames constitute only 10% of whole frames. Thus, it has been designed to automatically acquire significant frames through deep learning. For example, studies to track the position of the capsule (stomach, small intestine, etc.) or to extract lesion-related information (polyps, etc.) have been conducted. However, although grouping or labeling the training images according to similar features can improve the performance of a learning model, various attributes (such as degree of wrinkles, presence of valves, etc.) are not considered in conventional approaches. Therefore, we propose a class-labeling method that can be used to design a learning model by constructing a knowledge model focused on main lesions defined in standard terminologies for capsule endoscopy (minimal standard terminology, capsule endoscopy structured terminology). This method enables the designing of a systematic learning model by labeling detailed classes through differentiation of similar characteristics.
