Terfenol-D 액츄에이터의 히스테리시스 모델링과 제어 (Hysteresis Modeling and Control of Terfenol-D Actuator)

  • This paper proposes a systematic approach for an accurate control of the Terfenol-D actuator taking into account hysteresis, modeled by applying the classical Preisach operator with memory curve. A desired input displacement is calculated by using the hysteresis inverter, which is fed into the actuator. Then the PI compensator corrects the error between the commanded and actual displacements. Experiments with the step responses show that the PI controller settles in 70 ms and the hybrid controller in 20 ms. It means that the concurrent application of two control schemes is effective to control the actuator.

  • Terfenol-D는 상온에서 변형이 가장 큰 재료로 알려져 있고, 자기역학적 결합계수 k$_{33}$=0.75로 매우 높기 때문에 전기에너지를 역학적 에너지로 효율적으로 변환시킬 수 있다[1]. 단점으로는 압축강도는 700 ㎫로 높으나, 인장강도 30 ㎫로 매우 낮아서 재료가 brittle하여 장치 설계 시 세심한 주의가 필요하며, 재료의 상대투자율이 3~10정도로 낮기 때문에 자기폐회로를 구성하는데 어려움이 있다[2-4]. (중략)략)

  • Terfenol-D is one of magnetostrictive materials which have the property of converting the energy in magnetic fields into mechanical movement and vice versa. We designed and fabricated a linear magnetostrictive actuator using Terfenol-D. It has 25mm diameter and 100mm long. To grasp the characteristics of it, n series of tests were performed in the range of 50Hz below. Induced-strain actuation displacements of the actuator measured by test and predicted by magnetic analysis agreed well. And blocked forces according to the input currents were estimated from the testing results. Modelling method representing the exerting force of a linear magnetostrictive actuator was confirmed through some testing results.

  • Fundamental characteristics of Giant Magnetostrictive Alloy Terfenol-D$(Tb_{0.3}Dy_{0.7}Fe_{1.9\sim1.95})$ were measured by experiments. Magnetostrictions of Terfenol-D samples whose lengths are 15 and 25 mm have been measured under compressive stress from 0 to 14 MPa, when the applied magnetic field was up to 1200 Oe. The relationship between magnetostriction and field is shown graphically in the form of $H-{\lambda}$, curve. For the experiment, solenoid magnet and lever-arm-type stress equipment were designed and fabricated. The magnetostriction is measured by laser displacement measuring system and the stress applied to the sample is measured by load cell.

Simulation of magnetostrictive Terfenol-D rod dynamics using a coupled FE-BEM

  • This paper describes the application of the coupled FE-BEM (finite element-boundary element method) for the numerical harmonic analysis of the linear dynamic behaviour of a magnetostrictive Terfenol-D rod in water. The magnetostrictive rod is three-dimensionally simulated to transduce applied electric current in a helical coil around the rod to mechanical displacement. The theoretical derivation of the magnetostrictive matrix equation is described in detail. The steady-state resonance response of the displacement is shown. In addition, the directivity pattern and the radiation impedance are also shown.

자기변형 잉크젯헤드의 고점도 유체 토출 요구 압력에 관한 연구 (Study on the Highly Viscous Fluid Ejection Pressure of Magnetostrictive Inkjet Head)

  • This paper presents ejection of high viscosity fluids with magnetostrictive inkjet printhead(Magjet), which is not common with any other printhead. The MagJet uses a magnetostrictive material, Terfenol-D rod with 10-mm in diameter and 50-mm in length, as an actuation mechanism. It has been known that high viscosity is often an obstacle in ejecting small and mono-disperse droplets. We calculated required pressure with fluidic inertia (Bernoulli equation) and viscous loss (Hagen Poiseuille equation). The required pressure for ejecting a droplet is 1300kPa. The generated force and displacement with Terfenol-D rod are estimated to be 480N (2600kPa) and $28{\mu}m$, respectively. It was enough that Magjet eject high viscosity fluid (Max 1000cP). The experiments are performed to eject the high viscosity fluid with Magjet. The ejection of high viscosity fluids is successful with the aid of Terfenol-D's high performance.

  • The characteristic of magnetostrictive is to change shape in a magnetic field, TERFENOL-D is said to produce magnetostriction. A magneto strictive actuator need to the magnetic circuit. The most important design consideration is the magnetic circuit. The magnetic circuit consists of the solenoid coil, permanets for bias and shaping of the other parts through which the magnetic field passes. A good magnetic circuit ensures the proper magnetic field in th TERFENOL-D and very uniform magnetic field in all phases of the actuator operating cycle. This paper presents magnetic circuit design and analysis uesing FEM.

  • This paper deals with the feasibility assessment of hybrid linear motor that operates based on self-moving cell concept. The moving cell is composed of Magnetostrictive actuator and a ring structure, and a cell train is constructed by connecting two cells in series. Since this motor uses strong push force of Terfenol-D actuators and friction of the cells, it can essentially produce long stroke and large force. The overall performance of the motor was measured in terms of speed and force.
