  • Using THz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS), the power absorption, the index of refraction, and the real conductivity of silica sand are measured from 0.1[Thz] to 0.5[Thz] frequency range. It is impossible to measure the characterization of the silica sand by simple electrical measurements using mechanical contacts, e.g., Hall effect or four-point probe measurements. However, the THz-TDS technique can measure not only electrical but also optical characterization of he sample. Also this technique can measure frequency dependent results. Especially, the real conductivity was increased according to THz frequency. This is unusual material compare with metal and semiconductor materials; the measured real conductivity are not followed by the simple Drude theory.

  • We present qualitative and quantitative component analyses on compound explosives via Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) based on a combination of wavelet thresholding and wavelength selection. Despite its importance, the field of signal processing of THz signals of compound plastic explosives is relatively unexplored. In this paper, experiment results from explosives Composition B-3 and Pentolite are newly presented, suggesting a novel signal processing procedure for in situ compound explosives detection. The proposed signal processing method demonstrates effective component analysis even in noisy and humid environments, showing significant decrease in component concentration percentage error of approximately 22.7% for Composition B-3 and 48.8% for Pentolite.

  • We have demonstrated a terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy and imaging system using compact fiber-coupled THz modules. Using this THz spectroscopy system we have measured the absorption spectrum of water vapor in free space over 3 THz, as well as the refractive indices of various substrates such as Si, $Al_2O_3$, and GaAs using the transfer-function method. Through the THz imaging system we have observed a high-quality THz image of a medical knife and metal clip sample, with a resolution of $192{\times}89$ pixels using a step size of 250 ${\mu}m$.

  • In this paper we presented the detection of the explosive material RDX using a parallel plate waveguide (PPWG) THz time domain spectroscopy (TDS). Normally the explosive materials have been characterized through identification of vibrational fingerprint spectra. Until now, most of all THz spectroscopic measurements have been made using pellet samples where disorder effects contribute to line broadening such that individual resonances merge into relatively broad absorption features. In order to avoid such disadvantages we used the technique of PPWG THz-TDS to achieve sensitive characterization of explosive material RDX. The PPWG THz-TDS used in this work well established ultrafast optoelectronic techniques to generate and detect sub-picosecond THz pulses. The explosive material was analyzed as powder layers in $112{\mu}m$ gap of metal PPWG. The thin later mass was estimated to be about $700{\mu}g$. Finally, we showed spectra of explosives from 0.2 to 2.4 THz measured using PPWG THz-TDS.

  • We report the terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) of transdermal drug delivery in human skin. The time evolution of transdermal nicotine delivery in nicotine patches was assessed by detecting the transmission coefficient of sub-picosecond THz pulses and using a semi-analytic model based on the single-layer effective medium approximation. Using commercial nicotine patches (Nicoderm CQ®, 7 mg/24 h), THz transmission coefficients were measured to quantitatively analyze the cumulative amounts of nicotine released from the patches in the absence of their detailed specifications, including multilayer structures and optical properties at THz frequencies. The results agreed well with measurements by conventional in vitro and in vivo methods, using a diffusion cell with high-performance liquid chromatography and blood sampling respectively. Our study revealed the ability of the THz-TDS method to be an effective alternative to existing methods for noninvasive and label-free assessments of transdermal drug delivery, showing its high promise for biomedical, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic applications.

  • Full width half maximum (FWHM) analysis of superimposed terahertz (THz) signals in the glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) was studied to detect fine delamination inside GFRP. The THz signals were measured for each fine delamination size inside the GFRP using the reflection mode of the terahertz time domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) system. Then, the FWHM of the superimposed THz signal reflected at the fine delamination was extracted. Thereafter, the complex refractive index of the GFRP was measured using transmission mode of the THzTDS system. Based on this, the FWHM of the superimposed THz signal at the fine delamination were calculated and compared with respect to the fine delamination size. From the theoretically calculated superimposed signals, the relationship between the fine delamination size and the FWHM in the superimposed THz signal was derived. Consequently, the fine delamination size could be predicted through the analysis of the FWHM extracted from the THz signal at the fine delamination.

  • In recent years, gradually increasing interest has been directed to the use of terahertz technology in nondestructive testing and non-invasive measurements, and terahertz time domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) has become a key technology in such applications. This paper deals with the terahertz pulse generation from cadmium telluride via optical rectification process of femto-second infrared laser pulses. The measured terahertz spectrum is compared with the result of model calculation based on space-time domain nonlinear Maxwell equations for coherent frequency mixing process. The propagation process of terahertz and infra-red pulses in the material as well as the surface interference and free space diffraction effects are also considered. The experimental results are in good agreements with the calculated spectrum.

  • This paper introduces a rapid measurement technique for the stress-optic coefficient, using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. First we propose a design combining a four-point bending device with a scanning stage to streamline the loading process. Then we detail the measurement principle and outline the signal-processing algorithm. The experiments are carried out on Al2O3, a representative ceramic material. The experimental data reveal that the refractive index of Al2O3 exhibits a linear decrease with increasing stress. This work supplies an efficient method for stress measurement rooted in the stress-optic effect.

  • Terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy(TDS), imaging techniques, and related systems have become mature technologies, widely used in many universities and research laboratories. However, the development of creative technologies still requires improved THz application systems. A few key points are discussed, including the innovative advances of mode-locking energy-emitting semiconductor lasers and better photoconductive semiconductor quantum structures. To realize a compact, low cost, and high performance THz system, it is essential that THz spectroscopy and imaging technologies are better characterized by semiconductor and nano-devices, both static and time-resolved. We introduce the THz spectroscopy and imaging systems, the OSCAT(Optical Sampling by laser CAvity Tuning) system and the ASOPS(ASynchronous Optical Sampling) system, are constructed by our research team. We report on the THz images obtained from their use.

  • In this study, a terahertz time domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) imaging technique was used to measure doping concentration and physical properties (such as refractive index and permittivity) of the doped silicon (Si) wafers. The transmission and reflection modes with an incidence angle of $30^{\circ}$ were employed to determine the physical properties of the doped Si wafers. The doping concentrations of the prepared Si wafers were varied from $10^{14}$ to $10^{18}$ in both N-type and P-type cases. Finally, the correlation between the doping concentration and the power of the THz wave was determined by measuring the powers of the transmitted and reflected THz waves of the doped Si wafers. Additionally, the doped thickness, the refractive index, and permittivity of each doped Si wafer were calculated using the THz time domain waveform. The results indicate that the THz-TDS imaging technique is potentially a promising technique to measure the doping concentration as well as other optical properties (such as the refractive index and permittivity) of the doped Si wafer.
