This paper presents methodologies for remaining life prediction of plain concrete structural components considering tension softening effect. Non-linear fracture mechanics principles (NLFM) have been used for crack growth analysis and remaining life prediction. Various tension softening models such as linear, bi-linear, tri-linear, exponential and power curve have been presented with appropriate expressions. A methodology to account for tension softening effects in the computation of SIF and remaining life prediction of concrete structural components has been presented. The tension softening effects has been represented by using any one of the models mentioned above. Numerical studies have been conducted on three point bending concrete structural component under constant amplitude loading. Remaining life has been predicted for different loading cases and for various tension softening models. The predicted values have been compared with the corresponding experimental observations. It is observed that the predicted life using bi-linear model and power curve model is in close agreement with the experimental values. Parametric studies on remaining life prediction have also been conducted by using modified bilinear model. A suitable value for constant of modified bilinear model is suggested based on parametric studies.

This paper presents the design process and characteristic test results of tension sensors for measuring the ultimate tension forces of surgical wires. Three types of sensor were designed and tested for calibration. The first two types which transfer the wire tension to the sensing element by direct contact have too much hysterisis errors due to the firctional effect. This error can be considerably reduced in the modified structure, where a cover and a loading button is used to transfer force and moment to the sensing element. The strains predicted by theoretical equations agree well with those by finite element calculations neglecting friction and the strains by finite element analysis considering friction are in good agreement with those measured by four strain gages. The modified ring type tension sensor developed in this paper is expected to be useful for measuring the tension of surgical wires with nonlinearity of 1.31%FS, hysterisis of 5.74%FS and repeatability of 0.19%FS.

For mass production of printed electronics in roll-to-roll fashion, precision tension control is important to reduce register errors. Register error should be minimized within several to tens of microns for many electronic devices to be manufactured through printing technology. In order to achieve this goal, tension disturbance must be attenuated before printing process within a certain range. In this paper, a certain tension range which allows maintaining register error within 10 micron was defined with specific operating conditions. A LQG controller was proposed instead of the conventional PI controller for precision tension control using a multivariable feedback. A guideline to determine design parameters for calculating LQ gain was proposed. The proposed LQG controller was compared to both PI controller and LQ regulator with white noise by numerical simulations. Results showed that the proposed LQG controller was effective for attenuating tension disturbance with white noise.
Background: Despite tension type headache is popular, the exact mechanism and method of treatment are not certain yet. So, we supposed the basic mechanism of tension type headache is myogenic, and did Tienchu acupoint block, occipital nerve block, and trigger point injection in tension type headache patients. Methods: Fifty-seven tension type headache patients were treated with local anesthetics and small dose of steroid. The intensity of pain and effect of every treatment was evaluated as Verbal Rating Score (VRS; 0~10) before and after every treatment. Evaluation of treatment was based on the time of treatment (1,2 times, 3 times, 4,5 times). Goal of treatment was VRS reaching below two point and it was considered as treated state. Results: Symptom improvement rates of each treatment were 90% (1, 2 times), 91% (3 times), 70% (4, 5 times) respectively. VRS reduction more than 50% rates were 60%, 64%, 60% respectively. Treated state (VRS<2) rates were 33%, 27%, 30% respectively. Conclusion: Tienchu acupoint block, occipital nerve block, trigger point injection were sorts of most effective and simply applicable modalities of treatment in tension type headache.
An experimental investigation has done for studying the changes of physical properties of the air-jet textured polyester yarn. Through the experiments of polyester 85/72 drawn yarn and 50/36 partially oriented yarn doubling' the following results are obtained. The tenacity of textured yarn decreased as the number of tension rings increased when the nozzle diameter was 1.2 mm. In the case when the tension ring was not used during the texturing process, the tenacity of textured yarn decreased as the nozzle diameter increased. But this tendency changed according to the number of tension rings used, the diameter of the nozzle, and yarn take-up speed. Breaking elongation decreased as the number of tension rings increased from one to four and the take-up speed increased at diameter 1.2 mm of the nozzle. The higher the diameter of the the nozzle the higher the breaking elongation until 1.4 mm. The number of interlacing went down as the diameter of the nozzle increased and the take-up speed of the yarn increased. The higher the number of tension rings, the lower the number of interlacing.
In this paper, a new approach based on the continuum model is proposed to estimate the main cable tension force of suspension bridges from measured natural frequencies. This approach considered the vertical vibration of a main cable hinged at both towers and supported by an elastic girder and hangers along its entire length. The equation reflected the relationship between vibration frequency and horizontal tension force of a main cable was derived. To avoid to generate the additional cable tension force by sag-extensibility, the analytical solution of characteristic equation for anti-symmetrical vibration mode of the main cable was calculated. Then, the estimation of main cable tension force was carried out by anti-symmetric characteristic frequency vector. The errors of estimation due to characteristic frequency deviations were investigated through numerical analysis of the main cable of Taizhou Bridge. A field experiment was conducted to verify the proposed approach. Through measuring and analyzing the responses of a main cable of Taizhou Bridge under ambient excitation, the horizontal tension force of the main cable was identified from the first three odd frequencies. It is shown that the estimated results agree well with the designed values. The proposed approach can be used to conduct the long-term health monitoring of suspension bridges.

A set of relatively simple five local shear and tension failure variables is presented and then implemented into a generalized poroelastic hydromechanical numerical model to analyze failure potential and stability of variably saturated geologic media. These five local shear and tension failure variables are formulated from geometrical relationships between the Mohr circle and the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion superimposed with the tension cutoff, which approximate together the Mohr effective stress failure envelope. Finally, fully coupled groundwater flow and land deformation in two variably saturated geologic media, which are associated with a slope (Case 1) and a tunnel (Case 2), respectively, and their failure potential and stability are simulated using the resultant hydromechanical numerical model. The numerical simulation results of both cases show that shear and tension failure potential and stability of variably saturated geologic media can be analyzed numerically simply and efficiently and even better by using the five local shear and tension failure variables as a set than by using the conventional factors of safety against shear and tension failures only.

Recently, a novel stress sensor, which utilizes the elasto-magnetic (EM) effect of ferromagnetic materials, has been developed to measure stress in steel cables and wires. In this study, the effectiveness of this EM based stress sensors for monitoring of the cable tension force of a real scale cable-stayed bridge was investigated. Two EM stress sensors were installed on two selected multi-strand cables in Hwa-Myung Bridge, Busan, South Korea. Conventional lift-off test was conducted to obtain reference cable tension forces of two test cables. The reference forces were used to calibrate and validate cable tension force measurements from the EM sensors. Tension force variations of two test cables during the second tensioning work on Hwa-Myung Bridge were monitored using the EM sensors. Numerical simulations were conducted to compare and verify the monitoring results. Based on the results, the effectiveness of EM sensors for accurate field monitoring of the cable tension force of cable-stayed bridge is discussed.
A semi-empirical method to estimate the surface tension of molten alloys at different oxygen partial pressures is suggested in this study. The surface tension of molten Ag-Sn and Ag-Cu alloys were calculated using the Butler equation with the surface tension value of pure substance at a given oxygen partial pressure. The oxygen partial pressure ranges were $2.86{\times}10^{-12}$-$1.24{\times}10^{-9}$ Pa for the Ag-Sn system and $2.27{\times}10^{-11}$-$5.68{\times}10^{-4}$ Pa for the Ag-Cu system. In this calculation, the interactions of the adsorbed oxygen with other metallic constituents were ignored. The calculated results of the Ag-Sn alloys were in reasonable accordance with the experimental data within a difference of 8%. For the Ag-Cu alloy system at a higher oxygen partial pressure, the surface tension initially decreased but showed a minimum at $X_{Ag}$ = 0.05 to increase as the silver content increased. This behavior appears to be related to the oxygen adsorption and the corresponding surface segregation of the constituent with a lower surface tension. Nevertheless, the calculated results of the Ag-Cu alloys with the present model were in good agreement with the experimental data within a difference of 10%.
The elastic modulus is an important parameter to characterize the property of rock. It is common knowledge that the strengths of rocks are significantly different under tension and compression. However, little attention has been paid to the bi-modularity of rock. To validate whether the rock elastic moduli in tension and compression are the same, Brazilian disc, direct tension and compression tests were conducted. A horizontal laser displacement meter and a pair of vertical and transverse strain gauges were applied. Four types of materials were tested, including three types of rock materials and one type of steel material. A comprehensive comparison of the elastic moduli based on different experimental results was presented, and a tension-compression anisotropy model was proposed to explain the experimental results. The results from this study indicate that the rock elastic modulus is different under tension and compression. The ratio of the rock elastic moduli under compression and tension ranges from 2 to 4. The rock tensile moduli from the strain data and displacement data are approximate. The elastic moduli from the Brazilian disc test are consistent with those from the uniaxial tension and compression tests. The Brazilian disc test is a convenient method for estimating the tensile and compressive moduli of rock materials.
