  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the flexural strengthening effects of RC beams reinforced with carbon fiber sheets (CFS) in variable of strengthening amount and anchorage length of CFS. This study can be summarized as follows. The CFS shares the tensile stress such as rebar during loading test. Also, as the strengthening amount of CFS is increased, the maximum flexural strength of RC beams reinforced with CFS is increased. Therefore, it is confirmed that the CFS's strengthening method is very effective to improve the flexural strength of RC beams. The maximum flexural strength of RC beams with CFS is determined by bond failure between CFS and concrete surface. So, the evaluation of CFS's strengthening effect can be calculated using the tensile stress of CFS which is peeling. When the anchorage length of CFS. But, in case of same anchorage length of CFS, when the strengthening amount of CFA is increased, the ductility is decreased. Therefore, it is considered that the anchorage of CFS in the end zone is necessary.

  • Wood fibers for medium density fiberboard (MDF) was used in the filler layer of the white duplex board for increasing thickness and bulk of the board. The MDF fibers were treated with ozone (3% based on dry weight of the fibers), and mixed together with OCC (old corrugated container) to form paper. Ozone-treated MDF fibers gave high bulk, high tensile strength, high internal bond and fast drainage to the furnish mixed with OCC. It was shown that there were possibilities to reduced basis weight of the filler layer without loss of thickness, stiffness, and tensile strength. Furthermore, it showed the possibility to develop a new kind of board product that has high stiffness as well as high strength properties with light basis weight by application of the ozone-treated MDF fibers.

  • Statement of problems: Self-etch adhesives exhibit some clinical benefits such as ease of manipulation and reduced technique-sensitivity. Nevertheless, some concern remains regarding the bonding effectiveness of self-etch adhesives to enamel, in particular when so-called 'mild' self-etch adhesives are employed. This study compared the microtensile bond strengths to ground enamel of the two-step self-etch adhesive Clearfil SE Bond (Kuraray) to the three-step etch-and- rinse adhesive Scotchbond Multi-Purpose (3M ESPE) and the one-step self-etch adhesive iBond (Heraeus Kulzer). Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a preceding phosphoric acid conditioning step on the bonding effectiveness of a two-step self-etch adhesive to ground enamel. Material and methods: The two-step self-etch adhesive Clearfil SE Bond non-etch group, Clearfil SE Bond etch group with prior 35% phosphoric acid etching, and the one-step self-etch adhesive iBond group were used as experimental groups. The three-step etch-and-rinse adhesive Scotchbond Multi-Purpose was used as a control group. The facial surfaces of bovine incisors were divided in four equal parts cruciformly, and randomly distributed into each group. The facial surface of each incisor was ground with 800-grit silicon carbide paper. Each adhesive group was applied according to the manufacturer's instructions to ground enamel, after which the surface was built up using Light-Core (Bisco). After storage in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 1 week, the restored teeth were sectioned into enamel beams approximately 0.8*0.8mm in cross section using a low speed precision diamond saw (TOPMET Metsaw-LS). After storage in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 1 month, 3 months, microtensile bond strength evaluations were performed using microspecimens. The microtensile bond strength (MPa) was derived by dividing the imposed force (N) at time of fracture by the bond area ($mm^2$). The mode of failure at the interface was determined with a microscope (Microscope-B nocular, Nikon). The data of microtensile bond strength were statistically analyzed using a one-way ANOVA, followed by Least Significant Difference Post Hoc Test at a significance level of 5%. Results: The mean microtensile bond strength after 1 month of storage showed no statistically significant difference between all adhesive groups (P>0.05). After 3 months of storage, adhesion to ground enamel of iBond was not significantly different from Clearfil SE Bond etch (P>>0.05), while Clearfil SE Bond non-etch and Scotchbond Multi-Purpose demonstrated significantly lower bond strengths (P<0.05), with no significant differences between the two adhesives. Conclusion: In this study the microtensile bond strength to ground enamel of two-step self-etch adhesive Clearfil SE Bond was not significantly different from three-step etch-and-rinse adhesive Scotchbond Multi-Purpose, and prior etching with 35% phosphoric acid significantly increased the bonding effectiveness of Clearfil SE Bond to enamel at 3 months.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the tensile strength of solder joint between gold alloy and nickel-chromium alloy. The specimens were made with type III gold alloys and Ni-Cr-Be alloy and Degular Lot 2 solder. Eighteen paired specimens were made, and subdivided into three groups. Group I specimens were gold alloy-gold alloy combination, Group II specimens were gold alloy-Ni-Cr alloy combination, Group III specimens were Ni-Cr alloy-Ni-Cr alloy combination. Solder block were made with solder investment(Degussa A,G, Germany) and stored in room temperature for 24 hours. To reduce the formation of metallic oxide and increase wetting properties, flux was used before preheating and soldering procedure. The specimens were preheated at $650^{\circ}C$ and flux were applied again and gas-oxygen torch was used to solder the specimen. All soldered specimens were subjected to a tensile force in the Instron universal testing machine : the crosshead speed was 1 mm/mim. Tensile strength values of three soldered joint groups were 1. Gold alloy-Gold alloy solder joint : $$48.8kg/mm^2$$ 2. Gold alloy-Ni-Cr alloy solder joint : $$30.9kg/mm^2$$ 3. Ni-Cr alloy-Ni-Cr alloy solder joint : $$31.8kg/mm^2$$ The microscopic examination of fracture site showed cohesive and combination fracture modes in gold alloy specimens, but showed all adhesive fracture modes in Ni-Cr alloy containing specimens.

  • The use of Thin Spray-on Liner (TSL) as an alternative to shotcrete has drastically increased since 1990s when it was first developed and introduced to mines. In this study, tensile strength test, bond strength test, compression test with specimens coated by TSL, and two kinds of bending tests proposed by EFNARC (2008) were performed with two kinds of TSLs with different material compositions in order to evaluate their support capacities. As a result, both TSLs were shown to be satisfactory for the minimum performance requirements for a structural rock support suggested by EFNARC (2008) and tensile strength of a TSL was shown to increase as its content of polymer was higher. In contrast, its bond strength was shown to increase proportional to the content of a cementitious component especially at the early age.

  • Clinical suggestion for the limitation of application time of NaOCl solution is needed to avoid large reductions in resin-dentin bond strength. The aim of this study was to measure the change of ${\mu}$-tensile bond strength after the various application time of 5.25% NaOCl solution to pulp chamber dentin in endodontic access cavity, and to evaluate the effect of 10% sodium ascorbate application for 10 min on bond strength after the treatment of 5.25% NaOCl solution. In this experiment, there were no statistical differences(p > 0.05) in bond strengths between upper chamber dentin and lower chamber dentin. NaOCl-treated group for 20 min did not show any significant decrease(p > 0.05) in bond strength than non-treated control group. In contrast to that, bond strengths of NaOCl-treated groups for 40 & 80 min were significantly lower(p < 0.05) than that of non-treated control group. 10% sodium ascorbate retreated group for 10 min after 5.25% NaOCl application for 40 min to chamber dentin showed the recovery of bond strength significantly. However, the bond strength of sodium ascorbate retreated group after 5.25% NaOCl application for 80 min was still significantly lower(p < 0.05) compared to the non-treated control group, which means the reductions in resin-dentin bond strength were not fully reversed. On the contrary, sodium ascorbate retreated group after 5.25% NaOCl application for 5 min showed significantly higher(p < 0.05) bond strength compared to the control group, which demonstrates its superior recovery effect. In SEM exminations of specimens retreated with 10% sodium ascorbate after NaOCl application for 40 & 80 min showed that resin tags were formed clearly and densely, but weakly in density and homogeneity of individual resin tag compared to the control specimen.

  • The concept of stress wave was introduced through the quantized kinetic energy which is related to the potentional energy change of atom, molecular bond energy. Differentiated molecular bond energy $\varphi$() by the lst order displacement u becomes force F(F = d$\varphi$($u_i$)/du), if resversely stated, causing physically atomic displacement $u_i$. Such physical phenomena lead stress(force/area of applied force) can be expressed by wave equation of linearly quantized physical property. Through the stress wave concept, formation of dislocation, which could not explained easily from a theory of continuum mechanics, can be explained. Moreover, this linearly quantized stress wave equation with a stress concept for grains in a crystalline solid was applied to three typical metallic microstructures and a simple shape. The result appears to be a product from well treated equations of a quantized stress wave. From this result, it can be expected to answer the reason why the defect free and very fine diameters of long crystalline shapes exhibit ideal tensile strength of materials.

  • In this study, the effect of hydrogen absorbed in welding process on the fatigue behaviour of the weld bond was quantitatively made clear. The influence of cyclic loading rate on the fatigue characteristics of the manual arc weld bond was inspected under the condition of constant amount of hydrogen. Moreover, the fatigue cracking mechanism concerning the diffusible hydrogen in the welded part was discussed in connection with fractographs of the fracture surfaces.

  • The numerical simulations on the influence of mesoscopic structures on the macroscopic strength and fracture characteristics are carried out based on that the concrete is assumed to be a three-phase composite composed of matrix (mortar), aggregate and bond between them by using a numerical code named MFPA. The finite element program is employed as the basic stress analysis tool when the elastic damage mechanics is used to describe the constitutive law of meso-level element and the maximum tensile strain criterion and Mohr-Coulomb criterion are utilized as damage threshold. It can be found from the numerical results that the bond between matrix and aggregate has a significant effect on the macroscopic mechanical performance of concrete.
