The purpose of this study was to compare the fatigue, physical properties, flexibility and surface roughness of titanium used in removable partial dentures with those of a type IV and alloy and a cobalt- chromium alloy. Fatigue testing subjected the test specimen to rapid cycling at a given stress until failure occurred by using a small-sized, electrodynamic type bending fatigue testing machine. The S-N curves for the framework materials were generated. For tensile testing, a tensile bar as described in the ADA Specification No.14 was subjected to tensile loading until failure occurred. Load-displacement curves were generated for 18 gauge round specimen and tapered half round specimen. Then the flexibilities were calculated. The surface roughnesses were compared by analyzer. Through analyses of the data, the following conclusions were obtained. 1. The fatigue property of titanium was higher than that of a type IV gold alloy$(p\leq0.05)$, but there was no significant difference between titanium and a cobalt-chromium alloy $(p\geq0.05)$. 2. The yield strength, the ultimate tensile strength and Victors hardness of titanium were higher than those of a type IV gold alloy but lower than those of a coalt-chromium alloy$(p\leq0.05)$. 3. The percentage of elongation and reduction of area of titanium were the highest $(p\leq0.05)$. 4. The surface roughness of titanium was the greatest$(p\leq0.05)$. 5. The flexibility of titanium was lower than that of a type IV gold alloy but higher than that of a cobalt-chromium alloy$(p\leq0.05)$.
Self-piercing riveting(SPR) is a mechanical fastening technique which is put pressure on the rivet for joining the sheets. Unlike a spot welding, SPR joining does not make the harmful gas and $CO_2$ and needs less energy consumption. In this study, static and fatigue tests were conducted using tensile-shear specimens with Al-5052 plates for evaluation of fatigue strength of the SPR joints. During SPR joining process for the specimen, using the current sheet thickness and a rivet, the optimal applied punching force was found to be 21 kN. And, the maximum static strength of the specimen produced at the optimal punching force was 3430 N. During the fatigue tests for the specimens, interface failure mode occurred on the top substrate close to the rivet head in the most high-loading range region, but on the bottom substrate close to the rivet tail in the low -loading range region. There was a relationship between applied load amplitude $P_{amp}$ and lifetime of cycle N for the tensile-shear, $P_{amp}=3395.5{\times}N^{-0.078}$. Using the stress-strain curve of the Al-5052 from tensile test, the simulations for fatigue specimens have been carried out using the implicit finite element code ABAQUS. The relation between von-Mises equivalent stress amplitude and number of cycles was found to be ${\sigma}_{eq}=514.7{\times}N^{-0.033}$.
The factors affecting on the fatigue strength of spot_welded specimens have been studied. The influence of initial overloads on the fatigue life of spot_welded tensile_shear specimens is investigated by considering fatigue crack initiation and crack propagation. The change of strain range and the influence of initial overload are correlated on the basis ol strain results. The results of this study are as follows. l) The initial absolute strain range decreased with initial overloads increase, and absolute strain range decreased before transformation of waveform of strain, but increased after transformation of waveform of strain. 2) In case of subsequent point of inflection of offset strain, the increment of this strain decreased with initial overload increase. 3) As initial overloads increase, the deformation behavior of spot welded parts is restricted after overloading.
The effect of grain size on the tensile properties and fatigue behavior of austenitic high Mn steel has been investigated. The recrystallized austenite grain size of the cold rolled high Mn steel was increased as the annealing temperature increased from $600^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$. Larger austenite grain size decreased the yield strength and the tensile strength, and increased the uniform elongation due to transformation of some austenite into twins or E-martensite phase during deformation. Austenite grain refinement increased the tendency to form dislocation cells, instead. The specimen annealed at $1000^{\circ}C$ with large grain size showed lower fatigue crack propagation rate in low ${\Delta}K$ region due to rougher fracture surface caused by formation of deformation twins during fatigue at the crack tip region.
Evaluation of fatigue strength on the spot welded part is very important for strength design of spot welded steel structures. In this paper, we could get the life cycle of the spot welded part using the lethargy coefficient obtained through the quasi-static tensile shear test for the specimen welded by current 10kA. The reliability evaluation of the life cycle is completed by comparing the life cycle calculated under the constant loading rate with the life cycle obtained by dynamic fatigue test. And then the result calculated by the lethargy coefficient is verified through the lift cycle calculated using the dynamic final tensile stress formula under the increased loading speed. This way can make save the time and cost in processing of predicting the life cycle of a structure.
High temperature materials in service are subjected to mechanical damage due to operating load and metallurgical damage due to operating temperature. Therefore, when designing or assessing life of high temperature components, both factors must be considered. In this paper, the effect of tensile hold time on high temperature fatigue crack growth and long term prior thermal aging heat treatment on creep rupture behavior were investigated using STS 316L and STS 316 austenitic stainless steels, which are widely used for high temperature components like in automotive exhaust and piping systems. In high temperature fatigue crack growth tests using STS 316L, as tensile hold time increased, crack growth rate decreased in relatively short tensile hold time region. In long term aged specimens, cavity type microcracks have been observed at the interface of grain boundary and coarsened carbide.
An expert system for estimation of fatigue properties from simple tensile data of material is developed, considering nearly all important estimation methods proposed so far, i.e., 7 estimation methods. The expert system is developed using an expert system shell, UNIK, and the knowledge base is constructed with production rules and frames. Forward chaining is employed as a reasoning method. The expert system has three major functions including the function to update the knowledge base. The performance of the expert system is tested using the 54 ${\sigma}-N$ curves consisting of 381 ${\sigma}-N$ data points obtained for 22 materials. It is found that the expert system developed has excellent performance especially for steel materials, and reasonably good for titanium alloys.
Unlike general carbon steel, stainless steel's mechanical properties change depending on the content of chromium and nickel. In this study, since stainless steel for high-temperature pressure container parts is used as shafts, the fatigue strength and fatigue limit of the materials were evaluated using a rotational bending fatigue test. Meanwhile, fatigue analysis was conducted under the same conditions as the specimen for structural analysis and fatigue analysis of stainless steel for high-temperature pressure container parts. Using the fatigue analysis results, we tried to derive the life of the material and the safety factor for each part. As a result of performing a fatigue test by processing a specimen for the fatigue test of A182 F6A stainless steel, the fatigue limit was 548 MPa. The ratio between the tensile strength and fatigue limit of the material was 0.545, representing 54.5% of the tensile strength.
Spot welding, namely a kind of electric resisting welding has been used widely in field of automobile and aircraft industries because of easiness to apply. Specimens used in this study was a mild steel of 1.2mm thickness and the electrode was a Cu-Cr alloy of 6mm diameter. The surface sheared of specimens after testing of tensile shear was observed by SEM(scanning electron microscope) after ultrasonic cleaning for 10min., and microstructures and grain size of all specimens were measured with using of O.M.(Optical microscope). By the means of measurement and observations of tensile shear load, fatigue strength and share surface, the weldability of spot welding was evaluated. When tensile shearing testing, fracture starting point in all specimens was took place at the bond between HAZ(Heat affected zone) and nugget. With increasing in number of layers, fatigue strength was decreased. With increasing in electric current, grain size in the HAZ became more fine.
