Continuous monitoring of radioactive substances over a prolonged duration can yield crucial insights into the levels of radiation exposure through inhalation, both in the vicinity of nuclear facilities and/or general environments. In this study, we evaluated long-term measurements (2012-2022) of gross alpha-beta activities in the air in the vicinity of nuclear facilities and reference site, distribution characteristics of temporal trends and spatial fluctuations, and factors affecting radioactivity levels. The average airborne gross-α (in mBq m-3) for onsite and off-site were 0.124 and 0.117, respectively, and the average airborne gross-β (in mBq m-3) measurements were 1.10 and 1.04, respectively. The activity ratio (AR) of gross-α and gross-β were calculated as a ratio of 0.12. The distribution characteristics of gross-α and gross-β activities in this study area are likely influenced by the meteorological factors and variations in airborne PM concentrations rather than the operation of the nuclear facility.
The spatial and temporal variations of heating degree-days (HDDs) and cooling degree-days (CDDs) are closely related with the temperature field. The spatial distribution of 30-year mean HDDs shows that the higher values locates in the northern part of South Korea while the lower values locates in the southern part. The 30-year mean CDDs shows a more randomized distribution than the HDDs. The changing trends of HDDs and CDDs show a different feature: HDDs have a distinct decreasing trend while CDDs have an insignificant change. The decreasing trends of HDDs are consistent over South Korea and most of stations have experienced the statistically significant change. As significant changing areas of HDDs are much broader than those of annual mean temperature, HDDs can be more useful than annual mean temperature to detect the climate change impact on a regional level. In other words, an insignificant change on the mean temperature field can induce the significant change of thermal climatology in a region. The temporal pattern of climatic departure index (CDI) for South Korea HDDs series shows a general decreasing, but a sharp increase during recent years. The drastic decrease of HDDs induces higher CDI indicating larger variability among stations. However, the decrease of South Korea HDDs series cannot totally attribute to the global warming due to urban effects. By the early 1980s, there were no big differences of HDDs between urban and rural series, but later the differences are getting larger. This was expected to be with the intensification of urbanization in South Korea. However, still there is a decreasing trend of HDDs for rural stations.

In this study, spatial and temporal patterns and changes in seasonal multi-day cumulative extreme precipitation events defined by maximum 1~5 days cumulative extreme precipitation observed at 61 weather stations in the Republic of Korea for the recent 40 years(1973~2012) are examined. It is demonstrated that the magnitude of multi-day cumulative extreme precipitation events is greatest in summer, while their sensitivity relative to the variations of seasonal total precipitation is greatest in fall. According to analyses of linear trends in the time series data, the most noticeable increases in the magnitude of multi-day cumulative extreme precipitation events are observable in summer with coherences amongst 1~5 days cumulative extreme precipitation events. In particular, the regions with significant increases include Gyeonggi province, western Gangwon province and Chungcheong province, and as the period for the accumulation of extreme precipitation increases from 1 day to 5 days, the regions with significantly-increasing trends are extended to the Sobaek mountain ridge. It is notable that at several scattered stations, the increases of 1~2 days cumulative extreme precipitation events are observed even in winter. It is also observed that most distinct increasing tendency of the ratio of these multi-day cumulative extreme precipitation to seasonal total precipitation appears in winter. These results indicate that proactive actions are needed for spatial and temporal changes in not only summer but also other seasonal multi-day cumulative extreme precipitation events in Korea.

Conventional visualization of PM (Particulate Matter)10 flows applies superimposition of concentration distribution maps and wind field maps. This method is efficient for small scale maps where only macro flow trends are of interest. However, in the case of urban areas, local flows are difficult to model at micro level using wind fields, and therefore different methods of flow extraction is deemed necessary. In this study, flow information is extracted and visualized directly from the PM10 density data by using the gravity model. This method has the advantage that additional information such as wind field is not necessary for estimating the intensity and direction of PM10 flow. The extracted spatio-temporal flow patterns of PM10 are analyzed with relation to traffic information.
In this paper, we present a visual analytics system that uses serial-correlation to detect an abnormal event in spatio-temporal data. Our approach extracts the topic-model from spatio-temporal tweets and then filters the abnormal event candidates using a seasonal-trend decomposition procedure based on Loess smoothing (STL). We re-extract the topic from the candidates, and then, we apply STL to the second candidate. Finally, we analyze the serial-correlation between the first candidates and the second candidate in order to detect abnormal events. We have used a visual analytic approach to detect the abnormal events, and therefore, the users can intuitively analyze abnormal event trends and cyclical patterns. For the case study, we have verified our visual analytics system by analyzing information related to two different events: the 'Gyeongju Mauna Resort collapse' and the 'Jindo-ferry sinking'.

The six-year (2000~2005) record of aerosol optical thickness (AOT or $\tau$) data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) was analyzed over the Northeast Asia. The MODIS AOT standard products (MOD04_L2) over both ocean and land were collected to evaluate the spatial and temporal variability of the atmospheric aerosols over the study region ($32^{\circ}N{\sim}42^{\circ}N$ and $115^{\circ}E{\sim}133^{\circ}E$). The monthly averaged AOT result revealed slight changes(${\pm}0.002{\tau}/month$), which was almost unchangeable, over Korea. In contrast, the large AOT values (> 0.6) and a significant AOT increase (> 0.004 ${\tau}/month$) over East China were observed. For the analysis of spatio-temporal variability of AOT values, study area was divided by six sectors (I: North-East China, II: East China, III: Yellow Sea, IV: Korea Peninsular, V: East Sea, and VI: South Sea and Western part of Japan). The considerable result showed that particularly high AOT contribution was observed over sector I (32.5%) and II (25.5%) where some major urban and industrialized areas and agricultural fields are located and other cases were observed 13.2%, 14.6%, 7.1%, 7.0% over sector III, IV, V, and VI, respectively. In addition, yearly AOT changes based on seasons are observed differently at each sector but increasing trends reveal in summer and fall over all sectors.
This study provided a new research perspective for processing and analyzing AE data to evaluate rock failure. Cluster method and information entropy theory were introduced to investigate temporal and spatial correlation of acoustic emission (AE) events during the rock failure process. Laboratory experiments of granite subjected to compression were carried out, accompanied by real-time acoustic emission monitoring. The cumulative length and dip angle curves of single links were fitted by different distribution models and distribution functions of link length and directionality were determined. Spatial scale and directionality of AE event distribution, which are characterized by two parameters, i.e., spatial correlation length and spatial correlation directionality, were studied with the normalized applied stress. The entropies of link length and link directionality were also discussed. The results show that the distribution of accumulative link length and directionality obeys Weibull distribution. Spatial correlation length shows an upward trend preceding rock failure, while there are no remarkable upward or downward trends in spatial correlation directionality. There are obvious downward trends in entropies of link length and directionality. This research could enrich mathematical methods for processing AE data and facilitate the early-warning of rock failure-related geological disasters.
During the last few decades dramatic expansion of education occurred for women as well as men in Korea. Taking into account such a rapid expansion of education, this study examines trends in the effects of education on first occupational attainment among Korean women. Using the data from "the 4th Survey on Women's Employment," conducted by Korean Women's Development Institute in 2001, this study investigates the trends across three cohorts classified on the basis of the year of labor force entry after schooling: before 1980, 19801989, and 1990 or later. First, log-linear models are applied to the data to detect the temporal change in the overall association between education and first occupational attainment controlling for marginal distribution. The log-linear analysis shows that the strength of association between education and first occupation has declined over time. An additional analysis of OLS regression is conducted to see how the effects of each level of educational attainment on occupational prestige have changed across the three cohorts. The results of OLS regression suggest that the differences in prestige scores between the lowest and each of other educational levels are narrower in recent cohorts.t cohorts.
The trends of technical terms express the changes of particular subjects in a specific research field over time. However, the amount of academic literature and patent data is too large to be analyzed by human resources. In this paper, we propose a method that can detect and analyze the trends of terms by modeling the life cycle of the terms. The proposed method is composed of the following steps. First, the technical terms are extracted from academic literature data, and the TDVs(Term Dominance Values) of terms are computed on a periodic basis. Based on the TDVs, the life cycles of terms are modeled, and technical terms with similar temporal patterns of the life cycles are classified into the same trends class. The experiments shown in this paper is performed by exploiting the NDSL academic literature data maintained by KISTI.

We were interested in the long-term temporal and spatial variability trends of water quality. Trend tests such as the Seasonal and Regional Kendall tests and LOWESS (LOcally WEighted Scatter plot Smoother) have been recommended as outstanding tools for trend detection. In this study, we conducted four types of nonparametric trend tests (Seasonal and Regional Kendall tests, LOWESS, and flow-adjusted Seasonal Kendall). We aimed to identify water quality trends using the monthly data for five variables (BOD, COD, TN, TP, and flow) collected from 24 sites in the Nakdong River from August 2004 to December 2013. According to the Regional Kendall test, BOD, COD, and TN increased but TP decreased trend. The Seasonal Kendall test showed that BOD, TN, and TP remained constant at 62.5-83.3% of the sites. COD remained constant at 58.3% of the sites. LOWESS showed that TP gradually increased between 2007 and 2008, then decreased slowly at the Gumi, Geumhogang6, Daeam-1 and Milyanggang3 sites. BOD increased slightly between 2008 and 2009, and then decreased slowly at the Namgang4-1 site. Lastly, a flow-adjusted Seasonal Kendall test was conducted. There were different results between Seasonal Kendall and flow-adjusted Seasonal Kendall tests at 11 of the 24 sites. According to the results from six of the eleven sites, BOD increased at one site, showed no trends at three sited, and decreased at two sites. Each of COD, TN increased at two, one site. but TP decreased at two sites.
