  • We can predict spatial acoustic pressure distribution on the plane of interest by using acoustic holography. However, the information embedded in the distribution plot is usually much more than what we need: for example, source locations and their overall propagation pattern. One possible candidate to solve the problem is complex envelope analysis. Complex envelope analysis extracts slowly-varying envelope signal from a band signal. We have attempted to extend this method to space domain so that we can have spatial information that we need. We have to modulate two dimensional data for obtaining spatial envelope. Although spatial modulation basically follows the same concept that is used in time domain, the algorithm for the spatial modulation turns out to be different from temporal modulation. We briefly describe temporal complex envelope analysis and extend it to spatial envelope of 2-D acoustic field by introducing geometric transformation. In the end, the results of applying the spatial envelope to the holography are envisaged and verified.

  • In this paper, the numerical characteristics of the recently developed Envelope ADI-FDTD are investigated. Through numerical simulations, it is shown that the unconditional stability of the Envelope ADI-FDTD is independent of time step size and we can get better dispersion accuracy than the traditional ADI-FDTD by analyzing the envelope of the signal. This fact gives the opportunity for extending the temporal step size to the Nyquist limit in certain cases. Numerical results show that the Envelope ADI-FDTD can be used as an efficient electromagnetic analysis tool especially in the single frequency or band limited systems.

  • In speech communications in noisy environments, speech intelligibility is seriously degraded due to the masking effect of ambient noise. In this paper, a new method to improve speech intelligibility in noisy environments is proposed. Based on the perception theory that the temporal envelope plays a major role in determining intelligibility, the proposed method uses a novel operation that enhances the fluctuation of band-wise temporal envelope and also contains pitch enhancement for improving speech naturalness. In addition, a new subjective evaluation scheme employing binaural listening is proposed in order to measure more reliable performance. The subjective performance measured with the proposed scheme shows that the proposed method improves both intelligibility and naturalness in various environments, whereas a function parameter can control the performance trade-off between intelligibility and naturalness.

  • The wind-induced transient response of internal pressure following the creation of a sudden dominant opening during the occurrence of high external pressure, in low-rise residential and industrial buildings was numerically investigated. The values of the ill-defined parameters namely the flow contraction coefficient, loss coefficient and the effective slug length were calibrated by matching the analytical response with the computational fluid dynamics predictions. The effect of a sudden i.e., "instantaneously created" windward opening in the Texas Technical University (TTU) test building envelope was studied for two different envelope flexibility-leakage combinations namely: (1) a quasi-statically flexible and non-porous envelope and (2) a quasi-statically flexible and porous envelope. The responses forced by creating the openings at different time leads/lags with respect to the occurrence of the peak external pressure showed that for cases where the openings are created in close temporal proximity to the peak pressure, the transient overshoot values of internal pressure could be higher than the peak values of internal pressure in the pre-sequent or subsequent resonant response. In addition, the influence of time taken for opening creation on the level of overshoot was also investigated for the TTU building for the two different envelope characteristics. Non-dimensional overshoot factors are presented for a variety of cavity volume-opening area combinations for (1) buildings with rigid/quasi-statically flexible non-porous envelope, and (2) buildings with rigid/quasi-statically flexible and porous envelope (representing most low rise residential and industrial buildings). While the factors appear slightly on the high side due to conservative assumptions made in the analysis, a careful consideration regarding the implication of the timing and magnitude of such overshoots during strong gusts, in relation to the steady state internal pressure response in cyclonic regions, is warranted.

  • This paper presents results of continuous wave and swept frequency response measurements over the frequency range of UNII lower and middle bands from 5.15GHz to 5.35GHz in indoor environments. From the continuous wave measurements at 5.2GHz, the excess path loss, and the statistical characteristics of the temporal and spatial fading were found. By sweeping the frequency over the band, envelope correlation as a function of frequency was found and the coherence bandwidth (CBW) was determined from the envelope correlation. Using a channel model, the CBW was used to evaluate RMS delay spread. The dependence of CBW on the antenna polarization was simulated and compared with the measurement results. The influence of room size and separation of transmitter and receiver for LOS paths on RMS delay spread was discussed.

  • We improve the performance of cardiac disorder classification by adding new temporal features extracted from continuous heart sound signals. We add three kinds of novel temporal features to a conventional feature based on mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC): Heart sound envelope, murmur probabilities, and murmur amplitude variation. In cardiac disorder classification and detection experiments, we evaluate the contribution of the proposed features to classification accuracy and select proper temporal features using the sequential feature selection method. The selected features are shown to improve classification accuracy significantly and consistently for neural network-based pattern classifiers such as multi-layer perceptron (MLP), support vector machine (SVM), and extreme learning machine (ELM).

  • Both timbral features and spatial features are important in the assessment of multichannel audio coding systems. The prediction model, extending the ITU-R Rec. BS. 1387-1 to multichannel audio coding systems, with the use of spatial features such as ITDDist (Interaural Time Difference Distortion), ILDDist (Interaural Level Difference Distortion), and IACCDist (InterAural Cross-correlation Coefficient Distortion) was proposed by Choi et al. In that model, ITDDistswere only computed for low frequency bands (below 1500Hz), and ILDDists were computed only for high frequency bands (over 2500Hz) according to classical duplex theory. However, in the high frequency range, information in temporal envelope is also important in spatial perception, especially in sound localization. A new model to compute the ITD distortions of temporal envelopes in high frequency components is introduced in this paper to investigate the role of such ITD on spatial perception quantitatively. The computed ITD distortions of temporal envelopes in high frequency components were highly correlated with perceived sound quality of multichannel audio sounds.

본 논문에서는 종전의 TNS 기술의 취약점을 보완한 ITES(intensive temporal envelope shaping) 기술을 제안하였다. 제안 기술은 TNS 보다 유효한 오디오 시간영역 정보량을 예측하고 감축하였으며, 개선된 음질을 나타냄을 주관적 평가를 수행하여 검증하였다.

  • A type IIb supernova (SN IIb) is the result of core-collapse of a massive star which lost most of its hydrogen-rich envelope during its evolution. The pre-SN progenitor properties, such as the total radius and the mass of the hydrogen-rich envelope, can widely vary due to the mass-loss history of the progenitors. Optical light curves of SNe IIb are dominated by energy released by the hydrogen recombination and the radioactive decay of 56Ni in the early and late epochs respectively. This may result in distinctive double peaked light curves like the one observed in SN 1993J. The first peak, caused by the hydrogen recombination, can be modelled with numerical simulations providing information on the pre-SN progenitor properties. We compare two radiation-hydrodynamics codes, STELLA and SNEC, that are frequently used in SNe modelling, and investigate the effect of opacity treatment on the temporal evolution of the color temperature of SNe and eventually on the optical light curves. We find that with a proper treatment of the scattering opacity, SNe IIb models exploded from the progenitor models evolved with latest stellar evolution model hardly match the observational data. We also discuss the smaller scale features found in the models during hydrogen recombination phase.
