The spatio-temporal distribution and seasonal fluctuations of phytoplankton community were carried out in the Southwestern parts of Deukryang Bay of the Korean South Sea from July 1997 to January 1998. A total of 60 species of phytoplankton belonging to 41 genera was identified. In the southwestern parts of Deukryang Bay seasonal succession in dominant species; Eucampia zodiacus, and Chaetoceros spp. in summer, Nitzschia longissima, Chaetoceros curvisetus and Bacillaria paxillifera in autumn, Skeletonema costatum and B. paxillifera in winter, were very predominant. The community structure of phytoplankton in the southwestern parts of Deukryang Bay appeared to be diverse in species composition, and diatoms were most dominant through the year. Phytoplankton standing crops fluctuated with an annual mean of $1.2{\times}10^5$ cells $L^{-1}$ between the lowest value of $8.0{\times}10^3$ cells $L^{-1}$ in January and the highest value of $6.9{\times}10^5$cells $L^{-1}$ by Nitzschia longissima in January. Densities of the phytoplankton cell number by the samples of the southwestern parts of Deukryang Bay ranged from $1.1{\times}10^4$ cells $L^{-1}$ to $1.3{\times}10^5$ cells $L^{-1}$ with the mean value of $4.1{\times}10^4$ cells $L^{-1}$ in summer, from $1.0{\times}10^4$ cells $L^{-1}$ to $6.9{\times}10^5$ cells $L^{-1}$ with mean of $1.8{\times}10^5$ cells $L^{-1}$ in autumn, from $8.0{\times}10^3$ cells $L^{-1}$ to $4.6{\times}10^5$ cells $L^{-1}$ with mean $1.6{\times}10^5$ cells $L^{-1}$ in winter. That is to say, phytoplankton standing crops was high in low temperature seasons, while low in high temperature seasons. Chlorophyll a concentration fluctuated between 1.08 mg $m^{-3}$ and 21.6 mg $m^{-3}$ in January. In the southwestern parts of Deukryang Bay temporal change in chl-a concentration was not apparent. But chl-a concentration was high during a year. Therefore, phytoplankton production in the southwestern parts of Deukryang Bay could be very high year-round.

To understand the characteristics of the spatio-temporal distribution of phytoplankton after barrage construction in the Nakdong River Estuary, this study investigated relevant environmental parameters and phytoplankton status based on bi-monthly samples collected from the Nakdong River Estuary itself from February 2013 to December 2015. Environmental parameters did not differ significantly across these years but did vary between zones and seasons. The results suggested that the upper zone was dominated by fresh-water diatoms, green algae, and blue-green algae, whereas the lower zone was mostly dominated by dinoflagellates. The presence of Stephanodiscus spp., Asterionellopsis formosa, and Microcystis spp. in the upper zone was related to the inflow of freshwater discharge by artificial control of dyke gates. The dominant phytoplankton species in this zone were dependent on temperature, wind speed, DIP, and DIN, while those in the lower zone were mostly dependent on nutrients and wind speed. In addition, at the lower zone, there were negative correlations between Prorocentrum donghaiense, DIN, and wind speed, with its abundance being higher during the summer than other seasons. Analysis of temporal variations did not indicate any significant differences in the upper zone but did reveal variations among seasons at the lower zone. Except in 2014, the lower zone could be divided into periods dominated by diatoms (October-April) and dinoflagellates (June-August). These results suggest that the characteristics of the phytoplankton community were influenced by changes in the inflow of freshwater species and nutrients given the difference in the range affected by freshwater discharge.
This study aims to identify spatial distribution of estuarine wetlands in Korea, and to assess temporal variation of the wetlands in the last few decades. Widely known in environmental and coastal management, watershed-based regions which composed with Han-river(western and eastern parts), Keum-river, Yeoungsan-river, Seomjin-river, Nakdong-river, and Jeju, are analyzed to evaluate temporal change of estuarine wetlands in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, through the land-cover map. Results show that estuarine wetlands dramatically decreased in Han-river(western part), Keum-river, Yeoungsan-river that estuarine circulation have been interrupted with man-made structures such as dyke and drainage. But, estuarine wetlands surrounded by forests and grasslands has been relatively less damaged. Habitat diversity providing healthy estuary ecosystem is lower in interrupted estuaries than circulated estuaries, which are composed of tidal-flat, open water, salt marsh, rocky coasts and sandy shoreline. This study indicates that spatial distribution and temporal variation of estuarine wetlands are different with estuary type and region, so estuary type with seven regions can be applied to provides a framework for estuary management strategies and to establish estuary restoration plans.

The growth of multimedia technology forces the development of video detection for large database management and illegal copy detection. To meet this demand, this paper proposes a fast video detection method to apply to a large database. The fast video detection algorithm uses spatial features using the gray value distribution from frames and temporal features using the temporal similarity map. We form the video signature using the extracted spatial feature and temporal feature, and carry out a stepwise matching method. The performance was evaluated by accuracy, extraction and matching time, and signature size using the original videos and their modified versions such as brightness change, lossy compression, text/logo overlay. We show empirical parameter selection and the experimental results for the simple matching method using only spatial feature and compare the results with existing algorithms. According to the experimental results, the proposed method has good performance in accuracy, processing time, and signature size. Therefore, the proposed fast detection algorithm is suitable for video detection with the large database.

Sedimentological investigations on surface and suspended sediments were performed in Kwangyang Bay of the middle South Sea in order to reveal recent changes in depositional environments concerning anthropogenic influence. A variety of coastal developments caused the texture of the surface sediments to become distinctively finer, particularly in the southwestern part of the bay. Accordingly, the westward lining sedimentary facies was somewhat simplified from triple-mode distribution to the dual-mode one by the construction of POSCO. This east-west distribution to the sedimentary facies has recently graded into the north-south distribution by further construction of other industrial complexes including Kwangyang Port. The prominent textural changes in surface sediments are most likely associated with weakening of tidal currents related to the developments which is anticipated to be .still continued. The distribution and flux estimation of suspended sediments suggest a noticeable import of fine particles into the bay predominantly through a northern entrance rather than the southern entrance. The movements of suspended sediments in the water level near the seabed prevailed over those of the mid and surficial levels.
Formulation of quasi-dynamic wetness index was derived to predict the spatial and temporal distribution of the soil moisture. The algorithm of dynamic wetness index was developed through introducing the convolution integral with the rainfall input. The spatial and temporal behaviors of the wetness index of the Sulmachun Watershed was calculated using the digital elevation model(DEM) and the rainfall data for two years. The spatial distribution of the dynamic wetness index shows most dispersive feature of flow generation among the three assumptions of steady, quasi-dynamic and dynamic. The statistical distribution of the quasi-dynamic wetness index and the dynamic wetness index approximate to the steady state wetness index as the time step is increased. The dynamic wetness index shows mixed distribution of the normalized probability density function.
In this study, we analyzed the spatial and temporal distribution of wind resources over Korea based on hourly observational data recorded over a period of 5 years from 457 stations belonging to Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). The surface and 850 hPa wind data obtained from the Korea Local Analysis and Prediction System (KLAPS) and the Regional Data Assimilation and Prediction System (RDAPS) over a period of 1 year are used as supplementary data sources. Wind speed is generally high over seashores, mountains, and islands. In 62 (13.5%) stations, mean wind speeds for 5 years are greater than $3ms^{-1}$. The effects of seasonal wind, land-sea breeze, and mountain-valley winds on wind resources over Korea are evaluated as follows: First, wind is weak during summer, particularly over the Sobaek Mountains. However, over the coastal region of the Gyeongnam-province, strong southwesterly winds are observed during summer owing to monsoon currents. Second, the wind speed decreases during night-time, particularly over the west coast, where the direction of the land breeze is opposite to that of the large-scale westerlies. Third, winds are not always strong over seashores and highly elevated areas. The wind speed is weaker over the seashore of the Gyeonggi-province than over the other seashores. High wind speed has been observed only at 5 stations out of the 22 high-altitude stations. Detailed information on the wind resources conditions at the 21 stations (15 inland stations and 6 island stations) with high wind speed in Korea, such as the mean wind speed, frequency of wind speed available (WSA) for electricity generation, shape and scale parameters of Weibull distribution, constancy of wind direction, and wind power density (WPD), have also been provided. Among total stations in Korea, the best possible wind resources for electricity generation are available at Gosan in Jeju Island (mean wind speed: $7.77ms^{-1}$, WSA: 92.6%, WPD: $683.9Wm^{-2}$) and at Mt. Gudeok in Busan (mean wind speed: $5.66ms^{-1}$, WSA: 91.0%, WPD: $215.7Wm^{-2}$).
