  • South Africa has developed a policy and law that calls and provides for the equitable and sustainable use of water resources. Sustainable resource use is dependent on effective resource protection. Rivers are the most important freshwater resources in the country, and there is a focus on developing and applying methods to quantify what rivers need in terms of flow and water quality. These quantified and descriptive objectives are then related to specified levels of ecological health in a classification system. This paper provides an overview of an integrated and systematic methodology, where, fer each river, and each river reach, the natural condition and the present ecological condition are described, and a level/class of ecosystem health is selected. The class will define long term management goals. This procedure requires each ecosystem component to be quantified, starting with the abiotic template. A modified flow regime is modelled for each ecosystem health class, and the resultant fluvial geomorphology and hydraulic habitats are described. Then the water chemistry is described, and the water quality changes that are likely to occur as a consequence of altered flows are predicted. Finally, the responses to the stress imposed on the biota (fish, invertebrates and vegetation) by modified flow and water quality are predicted. All of the predicted responses are translated into descriptive and/or quantitative management objectives. The paper concludes with the recognition of active method development, and the enormous challenge of applying the methods, implementing the law, and achieving river protection and sustainable resource-use.

  • LPC analogues including natural and unnatural LPC, 3-L-2-PC, acetylated LPC and ethylene glycol derivative are prepared from D-mannitol using in convenient procedures by only changing the synthetic sequences, and their protective activities against cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)-induced severe sepsis are compared. The chirality at C2 position in LPC is found to be required as (S)-configuration for sepsis inhibition, comparing from the protection activity between LPC 6 and unnatural LPC 8. The hydroxyl functionality is also very important and required at C2 or C3 position as shown in the protection activities of ethylene glycol analogue 11 and 3-L-2-PC 9.

  • In this paper, we propose a method that extracts an invariant biometric key in order to apply this biometric key to the crypto-biometric system. This system is a new authentication architecture which can improve the security of current cryptographic system and solve the problem of stored template protection in conventional biometric system, also. To use biometric information as a cryptographic key in crypto-biometric system, same key should be generated from the same person. However, it is difficult to obtain such an invariant biometric key because biometric data is sensitive to surrounding environments. The proposed method solves this problem by clustering Iris Codes obtained by using independent component analysis (ICA).

  • Porous anodic alumina has been used widely for corrosion protection of aluminum surfaces or as dielectric material in micro-electronics applications. It exhibits a homogeneous morphology of parallel pores which can easily be controlled between 10 and 400nm. It has been applied as a template for fabrication of the nanometer-scale composite. In this study, mechanical properties of the AAO structures are measured by the nano indentation method. Nano indentation technique is one of the most effective methods to measure the mechanical properties of nano-structures. Basically, hardness and elastic modulus can be obtained by the nano-indentation. Using the nano-indentation method, we investigated the mechanical properties of the AAO structure with different size of nano-holes. In results, we find the hole effect that changes the mechanical properties as size of nano hole.

  • Derivation cryptographic keys from human biometrics opens a new promising research area when it can be used efficiently for not only verification or recognition tasks, but also symmetric-key based applications. Among existing biometric traits, face is considered as the most popular biometrics since facial features are informative and discriminative. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey of Face-based key generation (FKGS). First, we summarize the trend of FKGS researches and sum up the methods which play important roles in the proposed key generation systems. Then we present the evaluation and the general performance analysis; from that, we give a discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of surveyed studies to clarify the fundamental requirements and the main challenges when implementing FKGS in practice. Finally, an outlook on future prospects is given.

  • This paper addresses an image fingerprinting scheme for the print-to-capture model performed by a photo printer and digital camera. When capturing an image by a digital camera, various kinds of distortions such as noise, geometrical distortions, and lens distortions are applied slightly and simultaneously. In this paper, we consider several steps to extract fingerprints from the distorted image in print-and capture scenario. To embed ID into an image as a fingerprint, multi-bits embedding is applied. We embed 64 bits ID information as a fingerprint into spatial domain of color images. In order to restore a captured image from distortions a noise reduction filter is performed and a rectilinear tiling pattern is used as a template. To make the template a multi-bits fingerprint is embedded repeatedly like a tiling pattern into the spatial domain of the image. We show that the extracting is successful from the image captured by a digital camera through the experiment.
