  • Recently, Andong Reservoir and Imha Reservoir located in Nakdong River basin (Korea) are being connected by a tunnel (length 2km, diameter 5.5m) for a conjunctive use. The objectives of this study were to construct a two dimensional(2D) laterally-averaged model for two reservoirs, and examine the effects of connection on the water transportation and temperature stratification in the reservoirs. The 2D models for each reservoir were calibrated using field data obtained in 2006, and applied to the linked system for the year of 2002 when a severe flood intruded into Imha Reservoir during the typhoon Rusa. Simulation results showed that 364 million $m^3$ of water can be conveyed from Imha to Andong, while 291 million $m^3$ of water from Andong to Imha after connection. It resulted in 1.38 m increase of annual averaged water level in Andong Reservoir, whereas 3.75 m decrease in Imha Reservoir. The structures of thermal stratification in both reservoirs were influenced in line with the flow exchanges. In Andong Reservoir, the location of thermocline moved upward about 10 m compared to an independent operation. The results imply that the persistent turbidity issue of Imha Reservoir might be shifted to Andong Reservoir during a severe flood event after connection.

  • It is important to accurately predict the temperature and density distributions in large stratified enclosures both for design optimization and accident analysis. Current reactor system analysis codes only provide lumped-volume based models that can give very approximate results. Previous scaling analysis has shown that stratified mixing processes in large stably stratified enclosures can be described using one-dimensional differential equations, with the vertical transport by jets modeled using integral techniques. This allows very large reductions in computational effort compared to three-dimensional CFD simulation. The BMIX++ (Berkeley mechanistic MIXing code in C++) code was developed to implement such ideas. This paper summarizes major models for the BMIX++ code, presents the two-plume mixing experiment simulation as one validation example, and describes the codes' application to the liquid salt buffer pool system in the AHTR (Advanced High Temperature Reactor) design. Three design options have been simulated and they exhibit significantly different stratification patterns. One of design options shows the mildest thermal stratification and is identified as the best design option. This application shows that the BMIX++ code has capability to provide the reactor designers with insights to understand complex mixing behavior with mechanistic methods. Similar analysis is possible for liquid-metal cooled reactors.

  • Freshly harvested, immature (green) seeds of North American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L.) were stratified for up to 3 years in plastic pails in controlled environment rooms at $5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ for 9 months and then $21{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ for 3 months (Trt. 1, regular stratification), or continuously at $-2{\pm}0.2^{\circ}C$ (Trt. 2), or continuously at $3{\pm}0.2^{\circ}C$ (Trt. 3). During stratification at -2 and $3^{\circ}C$ embryos did not grow. On seeding in the field embryos grew rapidly and resultant seedlings were comparable to those from regularly stratified seed. Seedling emergence rate was acceptable at the industry expected rate of 68% after one year of storage, but not after two years storage when it declined to 17.5%. Seed rot was so severe in year 3 that no planting was carried out. Seedling and second year growth were similar at the three stratification temperatures; most importantly, root dry weight (economic yield) was similar. Low-temperature storage of freshly-harvested North American ginseng seed is an acceptable method for short-term retention of propagating material.

  • The operating range of HCCI engine is narrow due to excessive rate of pressure rise on high load. The fuel stratification is proposed to solve the problem. The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of the effects of fuel stratification on reducing the pressure-rise rate at high load in HCCI combustion and to investigate that the operating range is expanded for fuel stratification in the preceding condition of initial temperature and equivalence ratios. The engine is fueled with Di-Methyl Ether (DME) which has unique 2-stage heat release. The computations were conducted using SENKIN application of the CHEMKINll kinetics rate code. Calculation result shows that proper fuel stratification prolongs combustion duration and reduce pressure rise rate.

  • The artificial aeration in the middle and the small scale reservoirs is widely used to destroy the stratified layer and algal boom. This study has been conducted at the Youncho reservoir located in Keoje island since Jan. 2000 to suggest the most suitable control strategy of the artificial aeration and reduce the side effect. The main results obtained from this research are as follows. The starting time of aeration for destratification was adjusted from the end of March to the beginning of April when the natural stratification is started. In order to prevent an anoxic condition the artificial mixing should be started by the middle of April when the DO in hypolimnion is dropped to less than $5mg/{\ell}$. The decrease DO, caused by the increase in water temperature, spreads rapidly from hypolimnion to themocline. Thermal stratification disappeared after the onset of artificial aeration within 7 days in the Yuncho reservoir. The air diffusers decrease water temperature in the layer of epilimnion and thermocline, but rise it in hypolimnion. The continuous operation of air diffuser prevent the stratification and anoxic condition in hypolimnion despite of the rising of water temperature and algal abundance. The algal abundance is not observed in effective zone by aeration. The turbidity rising problem induced from the aeration is avoided by keeping an air diffuser about 1.5m high from the bottom of lake. During the summer season, ceasing the aeration should be decided carefully. And also, it is necessary to operate the system it considering weather and temperature, and depending on the number and the position of aerators.

  • We have analyzed surface water temperature and seasonal stratification of lakes in the Han river system using time-series Landsat images and in situ measurement data. Using NASA equation, at-satellite temperature is derived from 29 Landsat-5 TM and Landsat-7 ETM+ images obtained from 1994 to 2004, and was compared with in situ surface temperature on river-type dam lakes such as Paro, Chuncheon, Euiam, Chongpyong, Paldang, and with 10m-depth temperature on lake-type dam lake Soyang. Although the in situ temperature at the time of satellite data acquisition was interpolated from monthly measurements, the number of images with standard deviation of temperature difference (at-satellite temperature - in situ interpolated temperature) less than $2^{\circ}C$ was 24 on which a novel statistical atmospheric correction could be applied. The correlation coefficient at Lake Soyang was 0.915 (0.950 after correction) and 0.951-0.980 (0.979-0.997 after correction) at other lakes. This high correlation implies that there exist a mixed layer in the shallow river-like dam lakes due to physical mixing from continuous influx and efflux, and the daily and hourly temperature change is not fluctuating. At Lake Soyang, an anomalous temperature difference was observed from April to July where at-satellite temperature is $3-5^{\circ}C$ higher than in situ interpolated temperature. Located in the uppermost part of the Han river system and its influx is governed only by natural precipitation, Lake Soyang develops stratification during this time with rising sun elevation and no physical mixture from influx in this relatively dry season of the year.

  • The experiment was conducted to increase germination of Agrimonia pilosa seeds, one of the natural medicinal plants, by various treatments, and also the effects of seed treatments on the growth of plants after sowing in field. The optimum temperature for germination of A. pilosa seeds was $20^{\circ}C$ after 20 days stratification duration at $4^{\circ}$, the germination rate than highest, 86% at that temperature. The stratification increased germination rate in all the temperatures treated, shortened $26{\sim}32$ days of germination period and promoted more 20% germination rate than the other treatments. Flowing water, low temperature, $GA_3$ and NaOCl were not effective for germination and high temperature reduced germination rate. At the early growth stage, the plant height was taller $3{\sim}4\;cm$, one or more leaves were increased by the stratification treatments, and also stratification increased the number of leaves per plants 10 or more leaves compare with other treatments at harvesting stages. By stratification, the flowering date was 5 days earlier, June 18th than other treatments due to earlier sprouting.

  • With the increase of human activities since the Industrial Revolution, atmospheric greenhouse gas (GHG) concentration has increased, which is believed the cause of climate change. Methane ($CH_4$) fluxes were measured at two commercial swine barns (Jarvis and Guelph) with a four tower micrometeorological mass balance method. Two and three separate measurements were conducted at Jarvis and at Guelph, respectively. In the Jarvis experiments from May to July, mean $CH_4$ flux ($490.4{\mu}g/m^2/s$) during daytime was lower than that during nighttime ($678.0{\mu}g/m^2/s$) (p<0.05), which would be caused by break of slurry temperature stratification. In the Guelph experiment from January to April, mean $CH_4$ flux ($62.9{\mu}g/m^2/s$) during daytime was higher than that during nighttime ($39.0{\mu}g/m^2/s$) (p<0.05), which would be generated by high slurry temperature at 3 cm depth after April 6. Slurry temperature stratification in the Guelph experiment would happen from January to March.

  • A multi-zone model was used to predict the operating range of homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine, the boundaries of the operating range were determined by knock (presented by ring intensity), misfire (presented by sensitivity of indicated mean effective pressure to the initial temperature). A HCCI engine fueled with Di-Methyl Ether (DME) was simulated under different initial temperature and equivalence ratios, and the operating range was well produced by the model. Furthermore, the model was applied to develop the operating range for thermal stratification in the preceding condition of initial temperature and equivalence ratios. The computations were conducted using Senkin application of the CHEMKINII kinetics rate code.
