  • The formation of heat islands causes high energy demand for space cooling and peak cooling loads in conditioned buildings. High-temperature fluctuations on a building roof may cause mechanical stress and increase surface deterioration. Thermal energy storage (TES) systems using microencapsulated phase-change materials (MPCMs) have been recognized as one of the most advanced energy technologies for enhancing the energy efficiency and sustainability of buildings. In this study, we prepared MPCM/paint composites for mitigating the heat island effect and reducing peak temperature. In addition, we carried out thermal and physical analysis of prepared MPCM composite samples by means of SEM, FTIR spectroscopy, DSC, and TGA. Further, we evaluated the dynamic heat transfer performance of heat-storage tiles painted with 10 g of heat-storage paint. From the obtained results, we deduced that MPCM/hydrophilic paint composites are more applicable to various fields, including the building sector, than MPCM/hydrophobic paint composites. On the basis of SEM and FTIR spectroscopy results, we concluded that materials with hydrophilic properties are more compatible with MPCMs than those with hydrophobic properties. In addition, DSC analysis results revealed that MPCM/hydrophilic paint composites have better compatibility, higher latent heat capacity, and better thermal properties than other composites. TGA results showed that hydrophilic-paint-based composites have higher thermal durability than hydrophobic-paint-based composites. Finally, a lot of MPCM-loaded heat-storage tiles showed lower peak temperatures at all measurement positions.

  • The heat transfer phenomena in a coil-typed LPG vaporizer with a hot water bath employed an electrical heating system were experimentally analyzed. The heat energy is initially used to sensible heat region to heat LPG and then is done to latent heat region to vaporize LPG and to heat up the vaporized gas. A two-phase flow region could be found from periodic temperature fluctuations, and only sensible heat effect was found after passing through the region. The overall heat capacity was defined as multiplying the overall heat transfer coefficient by the heat transfer area and we found a correlation employing the heating water temperature and LPG flow rate. The results of this work can effectively be applied for the design of field scale LPG vaporizers in the near future because they can predict the features of heat transfer on a kind of coil type LPG vaporizer.

  • To get an insight into the operating characteristics of the passive residual heat removal system of molten salt reactors, a two-phase natural circulation test facility was constructed. The system consists of a boiling loop absorbing the heat from the drain tank, a condensing loop consuming the heat, and a steam drum. A steady-state experiment was carried out, in which the thimble temperature ranged from $450^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$ and the system pressure was controlled at levels below 150 kPa. When reaching a steady state, the system was operated under saturated conditions. Some important parameters, including heat power, system resistance, and water level in the steam drum and water tank were investigated. The experimental results showed that the natural circulation system is feasible in removing the decay heat, even though some fluctuations may occur in the operation. The uneven temperature distribution in the water tank may be inevitable because convection occurs on the outside of the condensing tube besides boiling with decreasing the decay power. The instabilities in the natural circulation loop are sensitive to heat flux and system resistance rather than the water level in the steam drum and water tank. RELAP5 code shows reasonable results compared with experimental data.

  • Effects of climate change on groundwater system requires understanding the groundwater system in temporal and spatial scales through the long-term monitoring. In this study, the spatio-temporal variations of groundwater were analyzed through the continuous observation of water level, electrical conductivity (EC) and water temperature with automatic data-loggers and sampling in a Gwangneung catchment, Korea, for the four years from 2008 to 2011. Groundwater monitoring were performed at the nest-type wells, MW1 and MW2, located in upsteam and downstream of the catchment, respectively. During the survey period, both the total amount of annual precipitation and the frequency of concentrated rainfall have increased resulting in the elevation of runoff. Water level of MW1 showed no significant fluctuations even during the rainy season, indicating the confined groundwater system. In contrast, that of MW2 showed clear seasonal changes, indicating the unconfined system. The lag-time of temperature at both wells ranged from one to three months depending on the screened depths. Results of chemical analyses indicated that major water compositions were maintained constantly, except for the EC decreases due to the dilution effect. Values of the stable-isotope ratios for oxygen and deuterium were higher at MW2 than MW1, implying the confined system at the upstream area could be locally developed.

  • This study applied a real-time IoT (Internet of Things) environmental monitoring system to wooden cultural heritages (WCHs) located in suburbs and forests in Korea. It automated the graphs of seasonal Temperature (T) and relative humidity (RH) changes inside the heritage structures and seasonal Performance Index (PI) values. While utilizing line graphs of the existing T and RH change trends and a bar graph expressing the PI values, this study examined the current status of the conservation environment inside the WCHs throughout the year and its diagnosis. Consequently, at higher latitudes, the organic cultural heritage repeatedly experienced large T fluctuations, and the risk of physical and chemical degradation of the materials was greater. However, the RH showed significant seasonal differences, even within the same latitude, indicating that the impact of latitude was not significant. Therefore, the staff in charge must manage RH by considering the surrounding environmental conditions and adjusting the internal environment of the structures. The PI values for the year-round T and RH inside the heritages were confirmed to only be a maximum of approximately 60% of the environmental suitability for conservation throughout the year, depending on the season. The relationship between the germination and growth potential period of xerophilic fungi and the monthly internal temperature and humidity in five heritages located at different latitudes was analyzed. As a result, we could thus determine that four particular months of the year (June-September) represent the periods with the highest risk of damage from xerophilic fungi in the country, regardless of latitude.

  • This study was determined to analysis the characteristics of water mass in the Bottol Bada, Yeosu in August, 2010 based on the data from the distribution of water temperature and salinity. Sampling was carried out a total of three times (i.e. July 29, August 13, and August 30, 2010) and performed at three stations. Observation was done during the period of time 10:00-15:00, indicating the decreasing tidal height and turn of tide. In July 29, thermocline was found at 4 m in St. 1, but the stratification did not observe in August 13 and August 30. The remarkable water temperature between surface and bottom was found in St. 2 and St. 3, whereas St. 1 did not find. A particular finding during this study showed a cold water mass at bottom layer from St. 2 and St. 3, which was first occurred in July 29 and persisted in August 30 without any of destruction. Water temperature had a remarkable fluctuation between surface and bottom, whereas salinity had a unique in St. 1. St. 2 and St. 3 showed the increasing salinity according to water depth in August 13 and August 30. Transparency had considerable fluctuations in St. 1 and St. 3 depending to sampling date, but St. 2 did not fluctuate. Consequently, the Bottol Bada had a significantly different water mass between inner and outer waters. Furthermore, strong irradiance and weak wind play an important role in developing the stratification between surface and bottom, in particular the introduction of offshore waters contribute to highly developing the stratification in the Bottol Bada during the period of August in 2010.

  • Histological observation on the seasonal variation of mucus cells of the mud loach Misgurnus mizolepis inhabiting a natural stream was carried out on three skin regions (dorsal, lateral and occiput) from March 2008 to February 2009. Our results showed no differences in general morphology by season, but the mucus cells of the epidermis showed significant seasonal change in their size and number as the water temperature changed. The ratio of surface area of the mucus cell layer and mucus cells, and the number of mucus cells in surface area of the epidermis were the greatest in the cold winter and the least in the hot summer in all regions of the epidermis. In particular, the occiput seemed to be a very sensitive region in response to environmental change, showing wide fluctuations in the size of mucus cells throughout the year and a great change in between seasons, especially from late autumn to early winter when the temperature decreased. As the temperature became colder, a small and spherical-shaped mucus cell was transformed into a large and elongated columnar form with a lot of secreted mucus material in a superficial layer of the epidermis. From our results, we can safely surmise that cold temperature is an important environmental factor having a close relationship with the modification of mucus cells of M. mizolepis in winter.

  • In order to ascertain the effects of fluctuations and range of daily temperatures on the growth of rice, a pot(1/5, 000 are) experiment was conducted in the phytotron, Crop Experiment Station, in 1972. Seven treatment combinations of day-temperatures 25 and $30^{\circ}C$ with night-temperatures 10, 15, 20 and $25^{\circ}C$ were applied in three 10 days periods, in to which the tillering stage was split after rooting of the paddy, namely, early, middle and late. The results may be summarized as follows: 1. The number of tillers were maximum with the treatments of day-temperature $30^{\circ}C$ and night-temperatures 20 as well as $25^{\circ}C$ in the early and middle periods, while the effects were small in the late period. 2. Multiplying plant height and number of panicles resulted in a high figure by combining a day-temperature of $30^{\circ}C$ with night-temperatures 20 as well as $25^{\circ}C$ in the early and middle periods, and no differences in the late period. 3. The treatment in the early period yielded a high RGR(g/g/day), of which the treatment combinations of day-temperature $30^{\circ}C$ with night-temperatures 20 and $25^{\circ}C$ gave the highest figure. 4. High straw weight in ripening stage was obtained with the temperature treatments in the early period rather than those in the late period. 5. Accordingly, it seems that the effect of temperature on the emergence of tillers is the highest at the early stage of tillering.

  • Dryers becoming commercially available for experimental and industrial use are classified to general drying oven, hot-air dryer, vacuum dryer, freezing dryer, etc. and kinds of them are various from the function, size and volume, etc. But the moisture measurement is not applied although it is important factor for the quality control and the performance improvement of products, and then now is very passive because the weight is weighed arbitrarily after dry-end. Generally the method for measuring moisture is divided by a direct measurement method and a indirect measurement method, and the former such as the change of weight or volume on the front and rear of separation of moisture, etc. is mainly used. Relatively a indirect measurement is very limited to apply due to utilize measurement apparatuses using temperature conductivity and micro-wave etc. In this research, we easily designed the moisture measurement system using the open-source based Arduino, and monitored moisture fluctuations and weight profiles in the real-time without the effect of external environment. Concretely the temperature-humidity and load cell sensors were packaged into a drying oven and the various change values were measured, and their sensors capable to operate 60℃ and 80℃ were selected to suitable for the moisture sensitive materials and the food dry. And also the performance safety using the organic samples of banana, pear, sawdust could be secured because the changes of evaporation rate as the dry time and temperature, and the measurement values of load cell appeared stable response characteristics through repeated experiments. Hereafter we judge that the reliability can be improved increasingly through the expansion of temperature-humidity range and the comparative analysis with CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) program.

  • To examine the fluctuations of aerosol number concentration with different size in the boundary layer of marine area during summer season, aerosol particles were assayed in the Ieodo Ocean Research Station, which is located 419 km southwest of Marado, the southernmost island of Korea, from 24 June to 4 July, 2008. The Laser Particle Counter (LPC) was used to measure the size of aerosol particles and NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data and sounding data were used to analyze the synoptic condition. The distribution of aerosol number concentration had a large variation from bigger particles more than 3 ${\mu}m$ in diameter to smaller particles more than 1 ${\mu}m$ in diameter with wind direction during precipitation. The aerosol number concentration decreased with increasing temperature. An increase (decrease) of small size of aerosol (0.3${\sim}$0.5 ${\mu}m$ in diameter) number concentration was induced by convergence (divergence) of the wind fields. The aerosol number concentration of bigger size more than 3 ${\mu}m$ in diameter after precipitation was removed as much as 89${\sim}$94% compared with aerosol number concentration before precipitation. It is considered that the larger aerosol particles would be more efficient for scavenging at marine boundary layer. In addition, the aerosol number concentration with divergence and convergence could be related with the occurrence and mechanism of aerosol in marine boundary layer.
