Catalytic Combustion Characteristics of Hydrogen-Air Premixture in a Millimeter Scale Monolith Coated with Platinum (밀리미터 스케일 촉매 연소기에서의 수소-공기 예혼합 가스의 촉매 연소 특성)

  • In the present study, catalytic combustion of hydrogen-air premixture in a millimeter scale monolith coated with Pt catalyst was investigated. As the combustor size decreases, the heat loss increases in proportion with the inverse of the scale of combustion chamber and combustion efficiency decreases in a conventional type of combustor. Combustion reaction assisted by catalyst can reduce the heat loss by decreasing the reaction temperature at which catalytic conversion takes place. Another advantage of catalytic combustion is that ignition is not required. Platinum was coated by incipient wetness method on a millimeter scale monolith with cell size of $1{\times}1mm$. Using this monolith as the core of the reaction chamber, temperatures were recorded at various locations along the flow direction. Burnt gas was passed to a gas chromatography system to measure the hydrogen content after the reaction. The measurements were made at various volume flow rate of the fuel-air premixture. The gas chromatography results showed the reaction was complete at all the test conditions and the reacting species penetrated the laminar boundary layer at the honeycomb and made contact with the catalyst coated surface. At all the measuring locations, the record showed monotonous increase of temperature during the measurement duration. And the temperature profile showed that the peak temperature is reached at the point nearest to the gas inlet and decreasing temperature along the flow direction.

A fundamental investigation on the stratified charged combustion (성층연소에 관한 실험적 기초연구)

  • The combustion phenomena of the stratified charged model combustion chamber under the initial conditions of the room temperature and the atmospheric pressure were investigated by using pressure record and high speed Schliern motion picture in comparison with that of the uniformly charged case. The results show that the total burning time is strongly dependent on the turbulent spouting flame jet speed which promotes the combustion process inside the chamber, and the pressure rise-up of stratified charged combustion is rather faster and higher than that of uniformly charged combustion, which can be resulted in the energy saving.

  • In this paper, the patient monitor consisting of amplifier, scan converter, A/D converter, CRT amplifier, and micro-controller part was developed. This patient monitor measures the patient's 4 states in the hospital such as electro-cardiography, respiration, blood pressure, and temperature. The control and processing methods based on micro-processor employ the flexibility, extensibility and economy over other conventional system. The followings are incorporated in this system. First, record the heart rate trends for 1 and 4 hours respectively. Second, measures the respiration by impedance pneumography. Third, measures the blood pressure with auto-zero balance. Fourth, linesrize the temperatures by bridge method.

  • Martian meteorites are the only available Martian Materials on Earth. A suite of demagnetization experiments, temperature dependence of saturation magnetization, scanning electron microscopy, and electron microprobe analysis were carried out to characterize the remanent magnetization carriers of Martian meteorite SaU 008. A stable paleomagnetic record of SaU 008 originates from a newly found spinel ((Fe, Cr, Ti)-spinel) whose composition has never been documented (or identified as magnetic).

  • In this experiment high-strength concrete of good workability is made by means of either replacing unit cement quantity to fly-ash by 20% or using low heat cement to reduce the internal hydration heat suggested as the fault of concrete. Concrete is poured through ready mixed concrete to test the ability of applying to the substantial works and is carried out the test of flowing and core strength and record of temperature of imitating specimens.   • Develoment precess and characteristics of eggs of the geoduck clam, Panope japonica are reporting in this study. Eggs and sperm were excised from gonad, artificially fertilized in an aquarium, reared under various temperature regimes, and record and record the larval period and the time need to reach a certain larval stage from ferilization. Unfertilized eggs of P. japonica appeared to be oval with a mean diameter of $70\mu$m and they became spherical after fertilization. The eggs of P. japonica can be classified as demersal. At a constant water temperature of $ 11^{citc}C$, it took 4 hours form fertilization to become four-cell stage, two days to become trochophore larvae, three days to become D-shape larvae, twenty-three days to become umbo stage, and thirty-six days to become fully grown veliger ready form settlement. A negative correlation was observed between the water temperature and the larval period of P. japonica. From fertilization to D-shape larvae, it took five days at 8$^{\circ}C$, while it was only two days to become D-shape larvae at $ 17^{citc}C$. Time required to D-shape larvae from fertilization was proportional to temperature, and the relationships were expressed as follows : To 8-cell stage, 1/t=0.0209 w-0.1167 (r=0.9967) To blastula stage, 1/t=0, 0055 w-0.0192 (r=0.9825) To trochophore stage, 1/t=0.0034 w-0.0155 (r=0.9907) To D-shape larvae stage, 1/t=0.0014 w-0.0023 (r=0.9843) (t, time in hours ; w, water temperature) Bioligical minimum temperature for egg development was calculated as 3.82$^{\circ}C$ in average.

  • Pulpal temperature is changed in response for various conditions which were mechanical, thermal, chemical and biological stimuli. This study was performed to determine the pulpal temperature changes which were using air turbine with air-water coolant, water coolant, and conventional dental engine with water coolant and no coolant on 28 canine of dogs. In order to record pulpal temperature, pulp chamber was opened on the labiocervical area of canine. Thermocouple was inserted into pulp chamber and was fixed with filling material(dycal). Changes of pulpal temperature were recorded on the physiograph, which had been standardized temperature degree, through thermocouple to thermistor bridge and carrier preamplifier. The amount of experimental temperature change to that of control was interpreted in the pulpal cavity. The obtained results were as followings: 1. The mean normal temperature was 33.07 centigrade. 2. The temperature was decreased than normal pulpal temperature. It was 12.04 centigrade in reduction by air turbine with air-water coolant, 7.17 centigrade in reduction by air turbine with air coolant, 5.54 centigrade in reduction by conventional engine with water coolant, and 1.26 centigrade in reduction by conventional engine with no coolant. 3. The time for maximal temperature change was 53.3 seconds in reduction by air turbine with air-water coolant, 73.4 seconds in reduction by air turbine with air coolant, 50.9 seconds in reduction by conventional engine with water coolant, and 27.1 seconds in reduction by conventional engine with no coolant. 4.. After reduction was ceased, the recovery time to normal pulp temperature was 287.1 seconds in air turbine with air-water coolant, 189.0 seconds in air turbine with air coolant, 86.9 seconds in conventional engine with water coolant, and 52.9 seconds in conventional engine with no coolant respectively.

DRYING CHARACTERISTINCS OF THIN-LAYERS OF WHEAT AND BARLEY AT NEAR-AMBIENT TEMPERATURE

  • Thin-layers of wheat and barley are dried at near-ambient temperatures(3.5$^{\circ}C$ -5$0^{\circ}C$) in order to obtain the intrinsic drying data. The well established apparatus was modified to enable it to record all the sample weight data in still air by using a purpose -built automatically controlled sliding valve. The air could be diverted in less than 0.5seconds and a 7 second period was required to attain a steady weight reading. With this apparatus, very smooth drying curves were obtained. The data of sample weight , drying temperature and dew point temperature wee recorded continuously . The drying process was terminated when the moisture content change in 24 hours was less than 0.004 d.b. This was achieved by drying a sample for about a week . The final points were recorded as the dynamic equilibrium moisture content(EMC). The drying data were than fitted to the exponential Newton model and the dynamic EMC data were fitted to the Modified-Chung-Pfost Model . All the fitted parameters are given and comparison is made with previous published data. The comparisons who that the current drying constants are lower than the previous data, the dynamic EMC data obtained for wheat and barely agree with the previous data. The results show that to obtain the drying constant in the exponential Newton model, adequate drying time is necessary.

Evolution of dynamic mechanical properties of heated granite subjected to rapid cooling

  • Experimental study of the deterioration of high-temperature rock subjected to rapid cooling is essential for thermal engineering applications. To evaluate the influence of thermal shock on heated granite with different temperatures, laboratory tests were conducted to record the changes in the physical properties of granite specimens and the dynamic mechanical characteristics of granite after rapid cooling were experimentally investigated by using a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB). The results indicate that there are threshold temperatures ($500-600^{\circ}C$) for variations in density, porosity, and P-wave velocity of granite with increasing treatment temperature. The stress-strain curves of $500-1000^{\circ}C$ show the brittle-plastic transition of tested granite specimens. It was also found that in the temperature range of $200-400^{\circ}C$, the through-cracks induced by rapid cooling have a decisive influence on the failure pattern of rock specimens under dynamic load. Moreover, the increase of crack density due to higher treatment temperature will result in the dilution of thermal shock effect for the rocks at temperatures above $500^{\circ}C$. Eventually, a fitting formula was established to relate the dynamic peak strength of pretreated granite to the crack density, which is the exponential function.
