  • To understand the cross-sectional structures of temperature, salinity and current across the Korea Strait, field measurements were carried out for the period of May 2 to 20, 1994. Using the R/V Tam Yang, detailed CTD profiles and ADCP records were obtained and used to examine the mean and variability field on two time scales (15 days and 25 hours). A sharp coastal front in the middle of the Korea Strait exists across which two different water masses, i.e., warm and saline water in the eastern side and cold and less saline water in the western side are neighboring. We observed highly variable field of T and S apparently caused by the westward movement of warm and saline water mass. Short-term fluctuations of T and S in the middle layer are remarkable and their importance was analysed as the first Eigen mode accounting for more than 50% of total variances. The currents in th Korea Strait are strongly influenced by tidal currents with spring and neap variation whose maximum speed ranges 80-90 and 60-70 cm/s respectively near the central portion of the channel. Strong southward tidal current could even mask the Tsushima Current completely. Results of harmonic analysis show that the magnitudes of semidiurnal, diurnal and mean components of currents are comparable to each other at spring and neap tide conditions. The volume transport across the western channel of the Korea Strait were estimated to be 2.1 Sv at neap tide condition and 3.4 Sv at spring tide condition.

  • The vertical distributions of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, chlorophyll, and primary production were investigated within the top 200m water depth in the south Pacific Ocean in February,2000. The study area ($24^{\circ}-41^{\circ}S,\;81^{\circ}-168^{\circ}W$) can be hydrologically divided into two regions. Upwelling was actively occurring in the eastern region of the $110^{\circ}S$ line, meanwhile it was not active in the western region. Accordingly, chemical properties in the surface waters were different between the two regions; nitrate+nitrite and phosphate concentrations were much higher in the eastern region than in the western region due to the active upwelling, but silicate concentration was higher in the western region. Among the nutrients, the major element influencing primary production was also different between the two regions; silicon would be a major element influencing primary production in the eastern region, but nitrogen may act as a major element for primary production in the western region. Primary production showed similar values in the two regions in spite of the large differences of nutrient concentrations in the surface waters, but the total chlorophyll integrated within the 200 m water depth was almost twice as much as in the western region than that in the eastern legion.

  • Geographical distribution of salps was elucidated in the South Sea of Korea with focusing on the April and June, 1997 when swarm of salps occurred. We also discussed on its distributional pattern in relation to environment conditions and its impact on marine ecosystem with emphasizing on trophodynamics. Salps were abundantly distributed in the south-eastern area of Cheju Island where is closely associated with the Tsushima Warm Current. In April and June, 1997, surface water temperature was $2{\sim}5^{\circ}C$ higher than the average over 1961-1998, while surface water salinity was lower. Chlorophyll-a concentration, density of copepods and catches of mackerel sharply decreased in April and June, 1997. These results suggest that the swarm of salps was due to not only transportation by strong Tsushima Warm Current but also supply of abundant foods. Low densities of copepods may be related to the presence of swarm of salps because of food competition between them. The fact that the catches of mackerel were very low in April and May, 1997 suggests that the trophodynamics between salps and copepods also influence the fish resources.

  • A study on quantitative phytoplankton samples, hydrographic conditions (temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen), and nutrients has been performed in the southern waters of the Korean East Sea in early spring. Phytoplankton community showed close correlation with hydrographic conditions. This study area could be divided into three phytohydrographic regions; 1) East Korean Warm Water Region (a branch of Tsushima Current), 2) North Korean Cold Water Region, and 3) offshore water region not affected by other two water regions. Vertical distribution of phytoplankton is dependent upon stability of water column and nutrient concentration. Nutrient concentration shows characteristic distribution according to water masses. N/P ratio of ca. 3 in surface layer indicates that nitrogen is the major limiting nutrient in this area. N/P removal ratio was 12.54 ($r^2$ = 0.96), consistent with the Redified ratio. Primary nitrite maxima at the nitracline depths are thought to be formed by phytoplankton exudation. Secondary nitrite maximum was observed in coastal area with dissolved oxygen content of >5.2 ml/l much higher than <0.25 ml/l in other areas. The mechanism of secondary maximum is different from that of other regions, and whether it may be due to in situ degradation of organic matter by bacterial activity is still open to discuss.

  • The larvae of Mytilus coruscus were grown at the room temperature of approximately 15.1C under several different sulture conditions, i.e., salinity, population of the larvae, density and kind of food organisms, etc. (1) The egg of Mytilus coruscus obtained in the laboratory measured about 73.0${\mu}$ in diameter. The embryos gradually developed into larvae up to 179.0${\mu}$ shell length with the shell height of 135.9${\mu}$ even in the absence of the algal food. Beyond this size, however, the growth of larvae was considerably retarded, indicating that the better growth could be expected if the food began to be fed four days after spawning. (2) The larvae began settling upon reaching 281.4${\mu}$ to 310.9${\mu}$ in shell length or 264.3${\mu}$ to 301.9${\mu}$ in shell height. When the shell length reaches 322.6${\mu}$ to 337.1${\mu}$, the shell height also reaches about the same, i.e., 321.5${\mu}$ to 346.2${\mu}$. (3) Daily rate of food consumption was determined by the size of the larvae and the species of the algal food. Regardless of the species of food given, the rage of food consumption remained almost the same until the larva reached the straight-hinge stage, and marked variations were found as the larvae grew larger. Daily rate of food consumption was shown as follow; Chaetoceros calcitrans : Y=2.99167e$\^$0.000018243x$\^$2// Cyclotella nana : Y=3.00324e$\^$0.000015481x$\^$2// Monochrysis lutheri : Y=3.000056e$\^$0.000014485$\^$2// (4) Suitable amount of the food to be given was about five times of the consumed food by Mytilus coruscus. (5) When the numbers of the larvae was higher than ten per milliliter, the growth was significantly retarded. (6) Monochrysis lutheri and Cyclotella nana were much better than Chaetoceros calcitrans as the food of Mytilus coruscus, and even the same food organism showed some difference with the age of the organism. (7) Sea water of higher salinity showed the better result in the growth of the larvae and the water with the specific gravity of 1.020 or below was dangerous for the larvae. (8) The mean growth of the larvae of Mytilus coruscus under lavorable condition was shown as follows: shell length 121.8${\mu}$ to 179.0${\mu}$ : Y=119.18+7.42X 196.7${\mu}$ to 322.6${\mu}$ : Y=203.144+7.687X 322.6${\mu}$ to 985.1${\mu}$ : Y=302.5978+11.8356X shell height 86.3${\mu}$ to 135.9${\mu}$ : Y=86.22+6.40X 158.1${\mu}$ to 321.5${\mu}$ : Y=162.998+10.027X 321.5${\mu}$ to 1,215.4${\mu}$ : Y=309.3701+16.258X Relationships between the shell length and shell height were shown as follows: shell length 121.8${\mu}$ to 179.0 : Y=0.83726X-15.79165 196.7${\mu}$ to 322.6 : Y=1.29909X-100.58610 322.6${\mu}$ to 985.1${\mu}$ : Y=1.3536X-101.6806

  • To understand the temporal variation of phytoplankton community in the Antarctic coastal ecosystem, physicochemical parameters, chlorophyll a, and primary productivity were measured as a component of the 7th KARP (Korea Antarctic Research Program) in 1994. Data were collected every month between February and December except four months (June-September) when the study area was frozen. Chlorophyll a concentrations ranged from negligible to 3.03 ${\mu}g/l$, averaging 0.63 ${\mu}g/l$. The primary productivity ranged 0.53-18.95 mg C/$m^3{\cdot}day$, and the depth-integrated primary productivity ranged 41.28-560.20 mg C/$m^3{\cdot}day$. A positive relationship was observed between the phytoplankton biomass and irradiance ($r^2$=0.29, p < 0.01). The degree of correlation between the primary productivity and irradiance ($r^2$=0.85, p < 0.001) was significantly higher than that between the phytoplankton biomass and irradiance. However, neither temperature nor inorganic nutrients seem to affect the temporal variation of primary productivity.

  • Fish larvae and environmental variables were collected in the sea around Cheju Island of Korea in November, 1986. Fish larvae were found at the 43 of 44 stations. Abundance of fish larvae rangεd from 3 to 259 indiv./$10^3\;m^3$ (average 50 indiv./$10^3\;m^3$) Dominant species were Engraulis japonicus, Champsodon snyderi, Gobiidae, Sebastiscus marmoratus, and Synagrops philippinensis, which comprised 56.6% of total fish larvae abundance. 43 stations were c1assified into two groups by c1uster analysis based on the abundance of fish taxa. Most stations of Group I were located in the middle reach of Tsushima Current and had higher number of species and abundance than the sites of Group II which cover the marginal areas of Tsushima Current, Korean Coastal Waters, and coastal water of China. The dominant taxa in the sites of the Group I were E. japonicus, Gobiidae, S. philippinensis, Aulops japonicus, Bregmaceros spp., Benthosema pterotum, Lampanctus spp., etc., all of which are typical warm-water species. Therefore, Tsushima Current seems to be the most critical factor regulating the structure of fish larvae community in the study area. The discriminant analysis using the environmenta1 variables (temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen) produced result with a difference only of 11.6% from that of c1uster analysis using the taxa composition and abundance data. Consequently, the structural type of fish larvae community can be used for predicting the changes of environmental conditions in the study area.

  • Firemen are directly exposed to various harmful chemicals, physical factors and mental stress during rescue and fire-fighting. In fire extinguishing, unstable posture, poisonous gas, dust, high temperature and heavy equipments are possible hazardous factors. The alertness for emergency, shift work, job strain and stress are also possibly hazardous. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence of musculo-skeletal symptoms and job stress and to determine risk factors in firemen. This study was carried out in a group of 226 firemen in Busan City, Korea. Standardized Nordic Questionnaire was used to investigate the prevalence of musculo-skeletal symptoms and Psycho-social Well-being Index (abbreviated PWI) was used to investigate the prevalence of job stress. General and occupational characteristics were included education, marital status, alcohol and smoking history, working duration, and work shift system. Body mass index (BMI) scores were calculated by physical examination including height and weight. Concerning musculo-skeletal complaints, the commonest site was neck, and shoulder, lower back, upper back were the next. Complaint site above one area of body was about 80%. From multiple logistic regression analysis, working duration was significant variable in musculo-skeletal symptoms. Odds ratio were 15.4 in working duration. About 16.8% was high risk stress group. From multiple logistic regression analysis, shift work and alcohol drinking were significant variables in PWI scores. Odds ratios were 2.25 in shift work. Accordingly, interventions are needed for health promotion of long term and shift worker.

  • Objectives: We aimed to compare the sampling performance of different flow-based impactor samplers for collecting fungal spores and bacteria and to explore the association of the level of bioaerosols with activity patterns of occupants in daycare center settings. Methods: For comparison of sampling performance, two different flow-based samplers (greater than 100 L/min or not) were selected; a low flow-based sampler (one-stage Andersen sampler) and two high flow-based samplers (DUO SAS SUPER 360 sampler, BUCK bio-culture sampler). We collected airborne mold and bacteria in 30 daycare centers with various levels of contaminated air. Three repeat samplings per each sampler were performed. Mold and bacteria were grown for 96 hours at $25{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ and 48 hours at $35{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, respectively. The Andersen and SAS samplers were used for investigating the association between the level of bioaerosols and the activity patterns of occupants in daycares. Particular matters 10($PM_{10}$), temperature, and relative humidity were monitored as well. Samplings were carried out with one-hour interval from 9 to 5 O'clock. For statistical comparisons, Kruskal-Wallis test, Wilcoxon's signed rank test, and multiple regression analysis were carried out. Results: The airborne level of molds by the low flow-based sampler were significantly higher than that of high flow-based samplers (indoor, P=0.037; outdoor, P=0.041). However, no statistical difference was observed in the airborne level of bacteria by each sampler. Also the level of bioaerosols varied by the time, particularly with different activity patterns in daycare centers. The higher level of mold and bacteria were observed in play time in indoor. Similarly, the concentrations of $PM_{10}$ were significantly associated with the level of bioaerosols (P<0.05). Conclusions: Our findings indicate that the flow rate of sampler, rather than total air volume, could be able to affect the results of sampling. Also, the level of airborne mold and bacteria vary behavior patterns of occupants in indoor of daycare settings. Therefore, different samplers with other flow rate may be selected for mold or bacteria sampling, and activity patterns should be considered for bioaerosol sampling as well.

  • Objectives: The present study is aimed at performing real-time measurement of fibrous materials using an F-1 fiber monitor, investigating the correlations between the measurements and environmental conditions, and assessing the feasibility of the use of the monitor in actual exposure assessments based on the accuracy and reliability of the device. Methods: Asbestos specimens with a fixed asbestos content were dispersed in a chamber and collected with a particle measuring test device. Measurements obtained by the existing PCM method, and with the F-1 fiber monitor were compared. In addition, concentrations of asbestos fibers obtained by the PCM method, the TEM method, and the F-1 fiber monitor were compared with that of specific ABS scenarios in NOA regions. Correlations of asbestos contents in soil and weather conditions with each method of measurement were analyzed. Results: Laboratory results showed that levels of asbestos fibers measured with each method increased as fiber contents in soil increased. In the accuracy and reproducibility assessment, no significant differences were found between the different methods of measurement. On-site assessment results showed positive correlations among the methods, and these correlations were less significant compared with what was shown by the laboratory results. Levels of asbestos fibers increased as asbestos contents in soil increased, and as temperature increased. Levels of asbestos fibers decreased as humidity increased, and wind speed did not significantly affect the extent to which asbestos fibers were scattered. Conclusions: While it would be premature to replace existing methods with the use of F-1 fiber monitors in real sites based on the results of this study, the monitor may be useful in the screening of the sites, which assesses hazard levels in different regions. Replacement of existing methods with the use of F-1 fiber monitors may be possible after the limitations identified in this study are overcome, and additional assessment data are obtained and reviewed under different conditions to confirm the reliability of the monitor in future research. Obtained assessment results may be used as basic data for the assessment of asbestos hazard in NOA regions.
