  • This study researched TV makeup types with a focus on Korean aesthetics. First, natural beauty is expressed with a random form that excluded artificial techniques or decorations often shown in the form of incompletion and space through TV entertainment programs. Incompletion is what excludes artificial technique and denies the whole completion in expressing a face, it shows the intentional incompletion that leaves it as a bare face that has no type, no color, and no decoration. A pursuit for purity, as nature leads to realizing the internal world of concentrating on the essence of object. Space is what makes it empty without filling, it offers a mental space in the inner side so that diverse images can be imagined beyond external form. This trend is indicated similarly to the tendency that the recent global interest in naturalism yearns for purity in nature and wellbeing. The presentation of skin (preferably healthy looking skin) is given attention; consequently, the similarity was being shown between the TV makeup that focuses on expressing skin and recent trends.

In order to conduct this research, the study analyzes the main subjects of the South Korean TV news contents, the image of characters on the TV news contents, and frames which the TV news contents mainly used. According to the results of this study, the TV news programs represent the positive image of South Korean government whereas they criticize North Korean government while representing North Korean defector issues. However, the TV news programs showed no interest in real problems which the North Korean defectors are experiencing. Further, the findings of this study are very similar to the results of previous studies that were analyzing the representation of news media about minority groups including North Korean defectors. Most studies analyzing how news media represent minority groups show that the groups have been identified not by their own opinions and relations but predominant culture and lifestyles in the society, and they are also represented not by their own voice but predominant perspectives of the society.

  • With the recent spread of digital content, more people have been watching the digital content of TV programs on their PCs or mobile devices, rather than on TVs. With the change in such media use pattern, genres(types) of broadcast programs change in the flow of the times and viewers' trends. The programs that were broadcast on TVs have been released in digital content, and thereby people watching such content change their perception. For this reason, it is necessary to newly and differently classify genres(types) of broadcast programs on the basis of digital content, from the conventional classification of program genres(types) in broadcasting companies or relevant industries. Therefore, this study suggests a plan for newly classifying broadcast programs through using machine learning with the log data of people watching the programs in online media and for applying the new classification. This study is academically meaningful in the point that it analyzes and classifies program types on the basis of digital content. In addition, it is meaningful in the point that it makes use of the program classification algorithm developed in relevant industries, and especially suggests the strategy and plan for applying it.

As a result, the buying countries of Korean TV programs have been relatively diversified : 40 countries across the world. However, examining the frequency of exportation has shown that it primarily focused on few countries such as Japan and Taiwan. Furthermore, drama has been the most preferred genre by foreign countries. Fortunately, remakes, dubbing productions, publications, and merchandising have been started to develop. As for the trade partner, the portion of foreign distributors has been ranked as a the most prioritized type. Therefore, it is necessary to open the existing closed system of distribution of Korean free TV to build more diversified partnership.

  • Due to the advance of broadband communication networks including the Internet, the release of diverse media, and the busy life cycle of modern people, it became difficult to watch TV programs strictly according to the program schedule. Instead, demand to download and watch the programs at any time on TV is increasing. In order to meet the demand, terrestrial DTV broadcasters developed a TV service which provides various on-demand contents by integrating terrestrial DTV network and the Internet without enforcing viewers to subscribe broadcasting services such as IPTV or CableTV, and standardized it as OHTV(Open Hybrid TV). In this paper, we explain the current status of OHTV standard and worldwide hybrid TV services and their technical standards. We also provide a strategy for the next version of OHTV standard in order to enhance the value of OHTV.

  • As a number of TV programs broadcast today, researches about TV program recommender system have been studied and many researchers have been studying recommender system to produce recommendation with high accuracy. Recommender system recommends TV program to user by using metadata like genre, plot or calculating users' preferences about TV programs. In this paper, we propose a new TV program Collaborative Filtering Recommender System that exploits viewing time pattern like viewing ratio, relation with finish time and recently viewing history to calculate preference for high-quality of recommendation. To verify usefulness of our research, we also compare our method which utilizes viewing time patterns and baseline which simply recommends TV program of user's most frequently watched channel. Through this experiments, we show that our method very effectively works and recommendation performance increases.

  • In order to examine the television(TV)'s role of nutrition education and the nutritional interests and problems of the general public in the 1990s, a comtents analysis was done on two nutrition-related TV programs, a regular round-table talk show and a newscast. Broadcast from January 1993 to July 1997 and from January 1997 to July f1997, respectively. Nutrition-related information was classified into five categories. Food and nutrient(39.5%) and diseases(34.7%) were most frequently telecasted, which were followed by food habits and general health(13.0%), traditional dishes and cookery(8.2%), and food sanitation and safety(4.6%). In becoming the latest year, some trends in the issues displayed increased telecasts about disease, dish and cookery, and food safety, while the telecasting of food and nutrient decreased. The contents about the relations hip between life-style(including diet) and chronic degenerative diseases and the importance of balanced diets and regualr meals for health promotion became particularly emphasized. Overall, two TV programs provided the public with positive, practical, and sometimes practive nutrition education messages for improving eating life and health care. They also raised the public's awareness of the nutritional importance of Korean staple foods such as rice, kimchi, seaweed, and soysauce, and they sometimes satified the audience's curiosities by introducing Korean food culture or foods of Buddhist priests. When the accident of food toxicity occurred concrete information about how to manage it was rapidly given to the public. In addition they played a role in food balance policy by telecasting over-product foods such as garlic and onion. However some negative points appeared. Telecasts on milk and its products and diabetes mellitus showed the least frequently. These shows should be broadcast more often considering the present nutrition and health problems in Korea. Some functions or effects of foods were mostly explained by only physicians of Chinese medicine. Sometimes misinformed, unclear, overemphasized, biased, or unfair information was televised to the public. If these problems could be solved through the sincere cooperation between nutrition faculty and TV produces, become televison could a more complete and effective medium for educating the public about nutrition.
