  • Cognitive Radio (CR) technology is proposed for using the unused spectrum band efficiently because of the spectrum scarcity problems. Spectrum sensing is one of the most challenging issues in cognitive radio system. In this paper, we focus on the signal detection of WiBro system band. As most of the modulated signals can be treated as cyclostationary random process, we can detect the signal of the OFDM signals in WiBro system. OFDM symbols using WiBro system have several pilot subcarriers and periodic pilots have cyclostationary characteristic. To improve the detection performance, we get diversity gain using multiple antennas.

  • Recently, the International Telecommunication Union allocated the 470-862 MHz band to the digital broadcasting (DB) service. Moreover, the 790-862 MHz sub-band will be allocated to the next-generation mobile system, known as the International Mobile Telecommunication - Advanced (IMT-A), and to the DB on a co-primary basis in the year 2015. Currently, two candidate technologies are available to represent the IMT-A system; the Mobile WiMAX and Long Term Evolution - Advanced (LTE-A). One of the main criteria of the IMT-A candidate is to not cause additional interference to the primary service (i.e., DB). In this paper, we address the spectrum sharing issue between the IMT-A candidates and the DB service. More precisely, we investigate the interference effect between the DB service and the mobile network, which could be either LTE-A or WiMAX. Our study proposes a spectrum sharing model to take into account the impact of interference and evaluates the spectrum sharing requirements such as frequency separation and separation distance. This model considers three spectrum sharing scenarios: co-channel, zero guard band, and adjacent channel. A statistical analysis is performed, by considering the interferer spectrum emission mask and victim receiver blocking techniques. The interference-to-noise ratio is used as an essential spectrum sharing criterion between the systems. The model considers the random distribution of the users, antenna heights, and the bandwidth effect as well as the deployment environment in order to achieve spectrum sharing. The results show that LTE-A is preferable to WiMAX in terms of having less interference impact on DB; this can eventually allow the operation of both services without performance degradation and thus will lead to efficient utilization of the radio spectrum.

  • Using the external cavity spectroscopy method, we have observed the saturated absorption spectrum of the P(16) line of the v$_1$+v$_3$ band of $^{13}C$_2$H$_2$$. The frequency of a laser has been stabilized to the saturated absorption spectrum. The relative contrast of the saturation spectrum is about 7% with respect to the linear absorption and the linewidth is about 1.8 MHz. The frequency fluctuation of the stabilized LD is about $\pm$ 20 KHz for a sampling time of 100 ms.

  • This paper proposed an algorithm for extracting spectrum gradient parameter to analyze the characteristics of natural seismic sounds and artificial seismic sounds. The experiment was performed in various area to raise the reliability. The characteristics of natural seismic sounds and artificial seismic sounds were analyzed by extracting gradient indexes of artificial seismic sounds and natural seismic sounds from the data of experiment by using the proposed algorithm. As a result of the experiment and the analysis, gradient indexes of natural seismic sounds were higher than that of artificial seismic sounds because natural seismic sounds had higher attenuation at high-frequency than artificial seismic sounds did and natural seismic sounds were concentrated in low-frequency band.

  • Having the characteristics of public goods, Radio Spectrum had been controlled by Government Authorities. In the past, technological side of spectrum, such as cross protection, was the main concern, but as the telecommunication industry is developing gradually, economic side of spectrum is becoming an important part. To uplift the Economic efficiency of spectrum management policy, clarifying the basic value of spectrum is one of the most important things. Also, both government authorities and spectrum licensees will have to choose license or investment under uncertainties such as license timing, time to market, technology standard, and so on. Considering all things, this paper gives the value to the spectrum by real options theory, which is a powerful method concerning uncertainty, especially for government, And we applied it to a specific spectrum band for the portable Internet in Korea. These results can provide information about the technological standard, optimal market-entry time as well as the value of spectrum for the portable Internet.

  • This paper proposes a noise suppression method through SNR (Singal-to Noise Ratio) estimation in the two microphone array environment of close spacing. The conventional method uses a noise suppression method for a gain function obtained through the SNR estimation based on coherence function from full band. However, this method cause performance decreased by the noise damage that affects all the feature vector component. So, we propose a noise suppression method that allocates a frequency domain signal into N constant multi frequency band and each frequency band gets a gain function through SNR estimation based on coherence function. Performance evaluation of the proposed method is shown by comparison with PESQ (Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality) value which is an objective quality evaluation method provided by the ITU-T (International Telecommunications Union Telecommunication).

  • Ultra wideband (UWB) technologies have been developed to exploit a new spectrum resource in substances and to realize ultra-high-speed communication, high precision geo-location, and other applications. The energy of UWB signal is extremely spread from near DC (Direct Current) to a few GHz. This means that the interference between conventional narrowband systems and UWB systems is inevitable. However, the interference effects had not previously been studied from UWB wireless systems to conventional wireless systems sharing the frequency bands such as broadcasting system. This paper experimentally evaluates the interference from two kinds of UWB sources, namely an orthogonal frequency division multiplex UWB source and an impulse radio UWB source, to a broadcasting transmission system. The S/N ratio degradation of broadcasting system is presented. From these experimental results, we show that in all practical cases UWB system can be coexisted 35m distance in-band broadcasting network.

  • When a primary user transmits over some frequency band assigned to it, most of its transmission power tends to be concentrated in the band but a small portion of it spreads into the adjacent bands. Thus the false alarm probability for the adjacent bands can be higher than expected, even though no primary users are active in the bands. A previous work evaluated the effects of the adjacent channel leakage on the performance of an energy detection based spectrum sensing but it did not take into account the fading phenomenon. In this paper, we analyze the effects of the adjacent channel leakage on an energy detection based spectrum sensing scheme in terms of detection probability and false alarm probability in a fading environment.

  • Cognitive Radio, which adaptively utilizes the vacant licensed spectrum band, is considered as an effective way to alleviate the scarcity of spectrum resource shortage. In order to guarantee the non-interference transmission of primary system, spectrum sensing, especially in quiet period, is proposed. However, it is insufficient to avoid the unacceptable interference caused by Cognitive Radios, because the primary user may appear anytime that is unpredictable. In this paper, we address the deficiency of conventional spectrum sensing and propose a novel Cognitive Radio receiver structure with monitoring function block to detect the appearance of primary user in a real-time manner. Simulations prove that the proposed eigenvalue based detection method together with the two-threshold decision procedure performs properly.
