  • This paper examines the relation between the skill premium and international trade given differences in the relative supply of skills across countries while allowing the South (developing countries) to develop its appropriate technology. Typical assumptions put forward in the literature state that either technology is exogenously given, or technical change is allowed only in the North (developed countries). I present a model of international trade with endogenous growth by allowing the South to direct its technology. The results show that more R&D is directed towards skill-augmenting technology in the North than in the South, in sectors with the same skill-intensity. Technical change induced by lowering trade costs can increase the skill premium in both the North and the South. This result can explain the empirical observation that the skill premium has increased within many developing countries after they experienced trade liberalization. Finally, the model predicts larger gains from trade compared with the model where technical change is either not allowed, or allowed only in the North.

  • Trees have the ability to undergo secondary growth and produce a woody body. This tree-specific growth is affected by the secondary vascular system and the developmental continuum of secondary phloem and xylem. Secondary growth is one of the most important biological processes on earth. Considering its economic and environmental significance, our knowledge of tree growth and development is surprisingly limited. Trees have received little attention as model species in plant science, as most Plant biology questions can be best addressed by using herbaceous model species, such as Arabidopsis. Furthermore, tree biology is difficult to study mainly due to the inherent problems of tree species, including large size, long generation time, large genome size, and recalcitrance to biotechnological manipulations. Despite all of this, one must rely on trees as models to study tree-specific questions, such as secondary growth, which cannot be studied effectively in non-woody model species. Recent advances in genomics technology provide a unique opportunity to overcome these inherent tree-related problems. Several groups, including our own, have been successful in studying the biology of wood formation with a variety of hardwood and softwood species. In this article, 1 first review the current understanding of tree growth and then discuss the recent attempts to fully explore and realize the potential of molecular biology as a tool for enhanced understanding of secondary growth.

  • The interlaminar fracture behavior of woven laminates under static and cyclic loadings has been studied using DCB(double cantilever beam) specimens. The effects of surface treatment and stiching on the fracture behavior of composite laminates are investigated experimentally. Fracture toughness has been improved by surface treatment because the surface treatment can change the fracture mechanism of laminates. SCB(stitched cantilever beam) model has been proposed to quantify the effect of through-thickness resinforcement(stiching) in improving the delamination crack growth resistance. Distributed loads which are transfered to through-thickness fibers can be calculated by the SCB model. And fracture energy increase due to the distributed load can be predicted by a power function of the distributed load. A new parameter agreed well proposed predict fatigue crack growth rate. The predictions using this parameter agreed well with the experimental data.

  • Keyword indexed in multidisciplinary journals show trends about science and technology innovation. Nature and Science were selected as multidisciplinary journals for our analysis. In order to reduce the effect of plurality of keyword, stemming algorithm were implemented. After this process, we fitted growth curve of keyword (stem) following bass model, which is a well-known model in diffusion process. Bass model is useful for expressing growth pattern by assuming innovative and imitative activities in innovation spreading. In addition, we construct keyword co-occurrence network and calculate network measures such as centrality indices and local clustering coefficient. Based on network metrics and yearly frequency of keyword, time series analysis was conducted for obtaining statistical causality between these measures. For some cases, local clustering coefficient seems to Granger-cause yearly frequency of keyword. We expect that local clustering coefficient could be a supportive indicator of emerging science and technology.

  • Nanosize ZnO particles were prepared by oxidation of zinc vapor and the particle growth was modeled by a coagulation model by assuming that the characteristic time for reaction was much shorter than coagulation time and residence time (${\tau}_{reaction}{\ll}{\tau}_{coagulation}{\ll}{\tau}_{residence}$). Experimental measurement of zinc oxide particles diameter was consistent with the predicted result from the coagulation model. For practical purpose of predicting zinc oxide size in areosol reactor, the constant kernel solution is concluded to be sufficient, Uniqueness of nano-scale property of zinc oxide was confirmed by the higher photocatalytic activity of zinc oxide than nanosize titania particles.

  • Objective: Investigation of muscle growth at different developmental stages is an appropriate strategy for studying the mechanisms underlying muscle development and differences in phenotypes. In particular, the muscle development mechanisms and the difference between the fastest and slowest growth rates. Methods: In this study, we used a growth curve model to fit the growth inflection point (IP) of QingYu pigs and compared differences in the long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcriptome of muscle both at the growth IP and plateau phase (PP). Results: The growth curve of the QingYu pig had a good fit (R2 = 0.974) relative to a typical S-curve and reached the IP at day 177.96. At the PP, marbling, intramuscular fat, and monounsaturated fatty acids had increased significantly and the percentage of lean muscle and polyunsaturated fatty acids had decreased. A total of 1,199 mRNAs and 62 lncRNAs were differentially expressed at the IP compared with the PP. Additional to gene ontology and Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes pathway analyses, these differentially expressed protein coding genes were principally related to muscle growth and lipid metabolism. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the identified differentially expressed lncRNAs, could play roles in muscle growth, fat deposition and regulation of fatty acid composition at the IP and PP.

  • Over the last decade, some Korean enterprises have emerged to become global players in their specialized products. How have they achieved such tremendous technological progress in a short period of time? This paper explores that question by examining the characteristics of technological innovation activities at major Korean enterprises. The paper begins with a brief review of the stages of economic growth and science and technology development in Korea. Then, the existing literature, explaining the Korean innovation model, is analyzed in order to establish a new framework for the Korean innovation model. Specifically, Korean firms have experienced three sequential phases, and thus, the Korean model, at the firm level, can be coined as "path-following," "path-revealing," and "path-creating." Then, the stylized facts in the first phase (path-following) and the second phase (path-revealing) are discussed, in the context of empirical evidence from the areas of memory chips, automobiles, shipbuilding, and steel. In terms of technology development, the Korean model has evolved as "collective learning" in the first phase, "collective recombination" of existing knowledge and technology in the second phase, and is assumed as "collective creativity" in the third phase. Ultimately, all three can be classified as "collective creation". Korean firms now face a transition in the modes of technological innovation in order to efficiently implement the third phase. To achieve remarkable progress again, as they did in the past, and to sustain the growth momentum, Korean firms should challenge new dimensions such as creative technological ideas, distinctive technological capabilities, and unique innovation systems -- all of which connote 'uniqueness'. Finally, some lessons from the Korean technological innovation experience are addressed.

  • Modeling the growth kinetics of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), one of the most valuable microbial groups in the food industry, has been actively pursued in order to understand, control, and optimize the relevant fermentation processes. Most modeling approaches have focused on the development of single population models. Primary single population models provide fundamental kinetic information on the proliferation of a primary LAB species, the effects of biological factors on cell inhibition, and the metabolic reactions associated with cell growth. Secondary single population models can evaluate the dependence of primary model parameters, such as the maximum specific growth rate of LAB, on the initial external environmental conditions. This review elucidates some of the most important single population models that are conveniently applicable to the LAB fermentation analyses. Also, a well-defined mixed population model is presented as a valuable tool for assessing potential microbial interactions during fermentation with multiple LAB species.
